F a c t sF a c t sEvery street will have at least two scheduled collection dates.

Sign up for a reminder about when leaves will be collected on your street by visiting dpw.dc.gov.

We will collect on Veterans Day (observed November 10) and Thanksgiving (November 23).

We will not collect on Christmas Day (December 25) or New Year’s Day (January 1).

Rain, snow, and ice storms will disrupt the collection schedule and cause delays.

Welcome to fall! In this booklet you will find information about DC’s leaf collection services, including a map

and schedule for when leaves will be collected in your ward.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will pick up leaves twice in

your neighborhood from November 6 through January 12. Please rake or

bag your leaves and place them in your tree box (or at the curb if there is

no tree box) the Sunday before your scheduled collection week.

In order to ensure every resident knows when their leaves will be

collected, we’re pleased to share this redesigned brochure and maps for all eight wards—we hope you’ll find them

to be clear and user-friendly.

Place leaves in the street instead of the tree box as this is a fire hazard and creates traffic and parking issues.

Sweep leaves, litter, or other debris into gutter or catch basins (storm drains). Clogged catch basins can cause street flooding during heavy rains and further contribute to water pollution.

Rake leaves into tree boxes or to the curb after your scheduled collection.

Place tree limbs, bricks, dirt, rocks etc., into tree boxes for collection.

Place only leaves in tree boxes or at the curb for collection.

Bring leaves, tree limbs, overgrowth from your alley, and other yard debris from your private landscaper to the Fort Totten or Benning Road Transfer Stations.

Bring holiday trees and greenery to the Fort Totten or Benning Road Transfer Stations.

Report clogged storm drains by calling DC Water at (202) 612-3400.

Who do I contact if my leaves aren’t collected during my scheduled time?Please call 311/ (202) 737-4404 or visit 311.dc.gov. If you miss your collection date, bag up your leaves in a paper bag and bring them to the Fort Totten or Benning Road Transfer Stations.

What’s considered a tree box?Tree boxes are the public spaces (usually box shaped) in front of private property that house trees and other plants. Residents are responsible for keeping the tree boxes in front of their homes in clean and safe condition.

What happens to my leaves after they’re collected?Each year, DPW collects and composts between five and seven thousand tons of leaves from residents’ tree boxes (or at the curb if there is no tree box). Free compost is available to DC residents all year round at the Fort Totten Transfer Station. Unfortunately, bagged leaves placed where your trash and recycling are collected are not able to be composted.

Why can’t leaves be raked into storm drains?While trees have many environmental benefits, too many leaves can clog catch basins (storm drains), disrupting drainage, and can pollute the Chesapeake Bay and other local waterbodies. Proper leaf collection and disposal is an important practice that helps make our rivers and streams healthy!

Holiday trees and greenery will be collected by the Department of Public Works(DPW) between January 13 to February 2 on your scheduled recycling collection day. Holiday trees and greenery may also be brought to the Fort Totten or Benning Road Transfer Stations at any point. Please remove all ornaments and lights and do not put the tree(s) and greenery in a bag. Trees and greenery collected during these three weeks (trees and greenery brought to either transfer station) will be composted and be made available to residents, free of charge, all year round. After February 2nd, place holiday trees and greenery where your trash is collected. They will be picked up with your trash. Unfortunately, trees and greenery collected after February 2nd will not be composted.
