Our safety systems are designed to ensure a high level of road safety. Safety for the drivers of the cab requires a comprehensive approach to cab design.

Cab safetyThe Scania cab has immense strength, high-quality materials throughout, compre-hensive corrosion protection and a superb fi nish. The distinctive shape and imposing appearance of a Scania cab is built around a tough, rigid steel cage. The structure has been designed to withstand severe impacts for the protection of the driver.

Cabs are impact and crash-tested to meet global safety standards, the toughest in the world.

Safety and security systemsActive or passive, optional or built-in, you can rest assured that with Scania safety features you’re always in good hands.

Active safety is all about making the driv-ing of your truck as secure as possible, with the aim of minimizing road risks, collisions and other incidents that could lead to in-

jury. Active safety is centred around giving the driver better feedback and control. To this end, we at Scania are constantly work-ing to improve visibility, handling, braking and stability.

Passive safety focuses on design aspects that minimize the consequences result-ing from a collision – consequences that affect the driver and the occupants of other vehicles. This includes structural integrity, instrument positioning and dispersion of impact forces.

Together, this dual approach creates an effective buffer around each driver, to protect against both the risks and results of driving accidents.

Safety testsThanks to generations of thorough research, design and testing, Scania’s vehicles have become extremely safe. This is largely because of the many innovative safety and support systems that exist in all Scania vehicles.

“The keys to good profi t-ability are high productivity and low operational cost”

The keys to good profi tability are fi rst and foremost high productivity, availability and utilisation, as well as low operational cost, including repair and maintenance.

High parts and service availabilityThe Scania Field Workshop facilitates on-site maintenance operations. Scania provides back-up and proper job distribution, in addition to good availability of spare parts. Good parts availability is provided to ensure maximum uptime of the equipment.

Moving high volumes of heavy material at the lowest possible cost – that’s the challenge everyday facing the mining industry.

“Uptime is decisive because high downtime means lower unit performance.” At many mine sites the working environment is dusty and a bit unpredictable when it rains.

Tough operating conditionsThese conditions put tough demands on trucks. “Customers demand from their fl eets high physical availability, high pay-load, low fuel consumption, good driving comfort and great performance on mining operations. Scania fulfi ls all of these expec-tation and more.”

Scania Field Workshop reduces downtimeOn-site support from the Scania Field Workshop is important for holding the business together. It’s essential to both productivity and profi tability. “Downtime means increased costs, de-creased effi ciency, decreased daily revenue, increased headaches and loss of product confi dence if repeated regularly.”“Having service personnel on-site and available immediately reduces downtime. If there is an incident with a vehicle in the mine, technicians and tools are available quickly to get the vehicle back in opera-tion.” Experience increased effi ciency as vehicle turn-around time is kept to a

BRAZIL

“As soon as I got to know the Scania mining trucks, I realized they were the best ones to work with”When Transportes Sarzedo Ltda (TSL) of Brazil was looking for new vehicles for their mining opera-tions ten years ago, they decided on Scania’s mining trucks, some-thing they have never regretted. Their requirements for uptime, pro-ductivity and operating economy were decisive.

Facts on TSL

Year the company was formed: 1996

Number of employees: 136

Type of transport operations: Mining waste

“As soon as I got to know the Scania trucks, I realized they were the best ones to work with”, says owner José Donizete de Souza Maia. “The comfort that the vehicles offer the driver and the reduced noise level was what fi rst caught my attention. These features help to protect the value of my company’s most precious asset: the people. This is why I soon identifi ed myself with Scania vehicles. Furthermore, the Scania vehicles are durable and economical.”

The dust is intenseThe company maintains operations in two different locations: Carrapato Mine, located in the township of Sarzedo and Pau Branco Mine, located in the township of Brumad-inho. The operating area is broken ground, with a great deal of mud in the rainy sea-son. In the dry season the dust is intense. The tracks are dirt tracks, and the terrain is irregular, with steep gradients and curves.

Under these tough conditions, fl eet up-time is a cornerstone of the business. These vehicles have to operate round the clock, transporting heavy loads at the lowest pos-sible cost.

“If a vehicle isn’t moving, it’s not pro-ducing. No profi t”, says Donizete de Souza Maia. Keys to good profitabilityAccording to Donizete de Souza Maia, maximum uptime and great fuel economy are keys to good profi tability.

Heavy tippers – for hard conditions

“And with Scania Opticruise we have reached fl eet fuel savings of 30%.”

“Furthermore, the Scania cab is the best in the mining industry. Comfort, visibility and suspension are excellent and the driver works more comfortably and with higher productivity”, Donizete de Souza Maia explains.

“Scania mining trucks meet operational requirements”José Donizete de Souza Maia will gladly recommend Scania mining trucks to busi-ness colleagues.

“Yes! Scania is moving in the right direction and has met the customer’s needs effi ciently, in addition to offering high qual-

ity products. I have purchased this truck brand since 2000 and I often get calls from future Scania customers asking about truck

performance in my operation. Scania min-ing trucks meet operational requirements, mainly taking into account the rough ter-rain and mobility diffi culty. Vehicles have good manoeuvring capability and grip.”

• Scania heavy tippers are perfect for hauling ore, coal, overburden and other geological materials. On any road – and even where there’s no road.

• From heavy tippers for the tough conditions of underground mining and open-pit min-ing to heavy tipper tractors with high power V8 engines for road transport, from crusher to harbour.

Scania Driver Training – smoother rides saves money

Benefits of Scania Driver Training• Increase road safety

• Improve fuel economy about 10%

• Less need for repairs

• Higher uptime and vehicle availabilty

• Better company image

Take action – drive safely and save money! Scania Driver Training shows the way towards a safer and more economical way of driving. It’s not just the fuel consumption that is reduced by learning how to drive the Scania truck more smoothly – wear and tear on the vehicle and the roads will also be considerably less.

Scania Driver Training welcomes you to take part in learning the latest driving tech-niques to keep the desired cruising speed up and the fuel consumption down. Always with safety in mind.

Single most important factorYour drivers are a crucial factor in the profi tability of your business. They are the single most important factor in fuel econ-omy as well as wear and tear of the vehicle, its tyres and parts, and of course road safety.Scania Driver Training can help even the most experienced drivers to drive more economically and more safely – and make a positive impact on your bottom line. You can expect to save about 10 % on fuel alone, with a signifi cant reduction in emissions. What’s more, tyres will last longer, and the powertrain will last longer and consume less oil.

Driver training pays for itselfA well-trained driver is far less likely to be involved in an accident – meaning less unplanned downtime and lower insurance premiums. And more uptime means more business for you.

A driver who enjoys the job and feels at ease will do a better job. This has an imme-diate impact on operating costs, road safety and the environment.

When you take all these factors into con-sideration, it’s clear to see how investment in driver training quickly pays for off.
