The U.S. IOOS and their Regional Associations have been

working on a National Glider Network (NGN) to determine

how gliders are deployed and operated, community

standards for data access and organization, and what the

candidate expansion paths might be towards a national

    capacity for gliders for observing.

IOOS has made this revised NGN plan as well as comment

response synopsis available for review. Comments are due

to Becky Baltes by March 21.

Recently, Bill Sydeman, a SCCOOS Principle Investigator, submitted his 2013 seabird report that

can be found on the SCCOOS website. This data report summarizes observations made during 3

seasonal CalCOFI/CCE-LTER (California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations/California

Current Ecosystem Long Term Ecological Research) cruises (winter, spring, summer 2013). A

total of 45 days of survey effort, covering 3,759 km of ocean habitat is summarized.

CalCOFI was originally formed in 1949 to study the ecological aspects of the sardine population.

The focus of the cruises are now to the study of the marine environment off the coast of

California, the management of its living resources, and monitoring the indicators of El Nino and

climate change. The California current plays an integral role in the economy of coastal

    communities.

The California Coastal Commission recently approved the states first aquaculture farm to be

located in federal waters, Catalina Sea Ranch.

The location of the farm will be 8 miles offshore from Long Beach. The key to this approval was

their willingness for a monitoring program. Alongside the Integrated ocean Observing System

(IOOS) regional institutions and experts, SCCOOS will assist with executing a monitoring plan for

evaluating any environmental and social impacts from the 100-acre shellfish ranch.

    Approval from the California

SCCOOS originally got involved in Ocean Acidification (OA) when the shellfish industry sought input

from the OOSes to understand why they were experiencing massive die-offs in their stocks. In an

effort to create an all-encompassing OA information center, SCCOOS has combined information

about their observation assets as well as info from their other Southern California collaborative

programs in to a SCCOOS OA project page. Below is a brief list of SCCOOS OA efforts, thus far.

    1. Dan Rudnick added dissolved oxygen sensors to the Spray Glider 11 for monitoring hypoxia in

coastal waters and to estimate pH and aragonite saturation.

    2. In 2004 SCCOOS added 9 nearshore stations of the CalCOFI water samples at the 20 m isobath.

    3. The West Coast OOSes will receive pCO2/tCO2 analyzer and install them in local shellfish farms

in support of the FY14 Marine Sensor Innovation Project.

    4. The West Coast OOSes receive a Sea Grant Fellow, Laura Lilly, for a one-year West Coast

Oceanographic Integration Fellowship through the West Coast Governors Alliance.
