As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

September 3 is Labor Day. As the Catechism teaches, “By means of his labor man participates in the work of creation. Work united to Christ can be redemp-tive.” Our daily work, whatever it may be, can be a source of great grace and holiness in our lives. Rec-ognizing the value of work and the dignity of the

person, the Church also teaches that all people have a right to access to employment, a just wage, and a working condition that respects their dignity.

Remember, next Sunday is Unity Day. There will be no 10:00 or 11:30 Masses. Join us for bilingual Mass at 11:00 at Dusable Park followed by food and fun.

No habrá misas a las 10:00am or 11:30am.

On September 15 from 8:30am-3:00pm is the annual Sister Antona Ebo Social Justice Con-ference sponsored by the Peace & Justice Commission and Catholic Youth Apostolate of the Archdiocese of St Louis and the Society of St Vincent de Paul Archdiocesan Council of St Louis. Par ish Counci l Update Dear parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since the current Parish Council was elected. In the past year, the Parish Council has been focused on how to best serve the needs of the parish and all its members. Yes, that means YOU! One of our first tasks was to hold a town hall meeting (last Oc-tober) to get feedback on how St. Charles Borromeo was doing. For example, what are our strengths? What are some things we could improve? Are there other programs or events that people would like offered? Overall, we had a good turnout and have used this feedback to guide us throughout the past year. One theme that came out loud and clear in the town hall meeting was a desire to further increase unity in the Parish. As a result of your feedback, the Parish Council decided to make Unity our primary focus for 2018. To this end, Parish Council invited the leadership of all our ministries to a meeting this past March to hear guest speaker, Dr. Javier Orozco, speak about unity and steps to take to realize greater unity. We’ve asked all of the ministries to be more intentional about unity and think of ways to reach out to all members of the Parish to increase connections. Parish Council is committed to continue this conversation with the ministries in the next year to further our mission. We are blessed to have such a wonderful group on council and this year we will continue to serve and look for ways to unite St. Charles Borromeo! You might be wondering, “What can I do?” Well, a good place to start is to attend our annual Uni-ty Day mass on September 9th at 11am in Dusable Park. This is a great opportunity to worship together as a parish family and make a new friend. I hope that you can join us and promise a good time for all! Sincerely, Doug Cornwell Chairperson

Sinceramente, Doug Cornwell Presidente

Journeying through Grief Ministry St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Grief Ministry is offering a Christ-centered support group for anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one. We all experience loss in our own unique way. There are times in our lives when we need support, prayers, and to be with others who are also mourning. Losing a loved one is one of the biggest challenges we will ever face. People deal with loss in different ways; there is neither a right nor a wrong way. For some grief support is helpful in beginning their journey moving through the valley of grief. In mourning we begin to build our bridge toward a new and different life.

The group will meet for five consecutive Tuesday evenings in October (2, 9, 16, 23 and 30), from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Once a month follow-up sessions will be held on the first Tuesday of each month following the October session. Participants are invited to bring a guest. The location is the S.E.A.S. Memorare Room at 2 Seton Court, St. Charles, MO

Please join us on the morning of Saturday, September 15, the Feast of the Sorrowful Mother, for the annual Children’s Memorial Mass to offer spiritual support for all families who are suffering from the loss of a child at any age. If you or someone you know has lost a child, we hope you will join us as a community in remembering these precious children. Please contact Ann Tollefson at 636-928-2970 or Barb Bott at 636-947-3939 if you have any questions. Order for the Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth The Order for the Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth seeks to set the death of an in-fant within the context of our faith, and to unite the grieving parents and family members to the merciful God, whose love was revealed for us in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Order for Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth may be performed at any time, no matter how much time has passed since the child's death. Please contact one of the priests or deacons if you are in-terested in this rite or have any questions.

September 2, 2018 –Gospel Background

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

September 2, 2018 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Gospel today hits home closer that we may

think. What traditions do we blindly cling to? Per-haps it is enough for us to just go to Mass on Sun-

day? Do we keep the letter of the law and miss entirely the spirit of the law? Interior righteousness means a heart turned to God. Purity

of heart is expressed in righteous living: self-giving for the sake of others.

As you give your gift to the poor through the Society of St. Vincent

de Paul, in your heart you also will find the good news of God’s love.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carry-ing on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the gener-

osity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

This Sunday, our lectionary returns to Mark’s Gospel after a num-ber of Sundays in which we heard the Bread of Life discourse from the Gospel of John. Recall that we focus on the Gospel of Mark in Lectionary Cycle B, but substitute John’s report of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes for Mark’s report of this event.

In today’s Gospel, Mark provides a significant amount of infor-mation about the Jewish observance of ritual-purity laws. Most scholars believe that Mark includes this information because his audience includes Gentile Christians who have no knowledge or experience of these laws. We can infer, therefore, that many in Mark’s community were not Jewish Christians.

In this Gospel, Mark addresses the question of which Jewish prac-tices would also be observed in the newly emerging Christian community. This was a significant question for the early Christian Church, especially in communities that included both Jewish and Gentile converts to Christianity. We also hear this question ad-dressed in the letters of Paul with regard to table fellowship. In Gospel passages such as the one today, we see the Gospel evange-lists finding justification for a Christian practice distinct from Ju-daism in the remembrances of Jesus’ teaching and the practice of his first disciples.

Jesus first criticizes the Pharisees for putting human tradition above God’s Law. Here, Jesus is referring to the tradition of the elders, the teachings of the Pharisees, which extended the ritual-purity laws of Temple worship to everyday Jewish life. Jesus criti-cizes the Pharisees for making this tradition equal to and as bind-ing as the Law of Moses.

Next, Jesus comments on the meaning behind the Pharisees’ lan-guage of holiness—clean and unclean. Jesus teaches that a person is not defiled by the food that enters his or her body, but rather by sin that emerges from his or her words and actions. In this teach-ing, Jesus unmasks a deeper question behind the one posed to him by the Pharisees. The real issue is holiness, which is not found in external acts alone. Holiness comes from within and is evidenced in the actions and attitudes that emerge from a person’s life.

Continued next column….

If we read today’s Gospel carefully, we will see a pattern in Jesus’ teaching method that will be repeated in the weeks ahead. Jesus’ first teaching is directed to the Pharisees who questioned him. Jesus’ words are then directed to the crowd, teaching that a person is defiled by his or her words and actions, not by the food that he or she eats. In verses omitted in today’s reading, we learn that Jesus returned home with his disciples, who in turn questioned him about what he had taught. The words we read at the conclu-sion of today’s Gospel are addressed to Jesus’ disciples. Mark’s narrative shows several audiences for Jesus’ teaching: his antago-nists, the crowds, and Jesus’ disciples. As we see in this reading, the words to the Pharisees are often words of challenge. The teaching to the crowds is often a general, sometimes cryptic, mes-sage. With the disciples, who often misunderstand Jesus’ words, further explanation is offered about his message and its meaning. Jesus’ words challenge us as well. In our desire to show that we are holy, we might also give too much credence to externals, fol-lowing rules without thinking about the intention behind them. Jesus reminds us that we do not make ourselves holy by our ac-tions. Rather, we become holy when we allow God’s Spirit to transform us. Our actions should be an expression of the conver-sion of our heart to God and to God’s ways.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
