Scout Sunday

Congratulations to all of our Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts who earned their religious emblems and are receiving them today. The first obligation of the Scout Oath is to do one’s duty to God, and the final point of the Scout Law is Reverent. We hope that, by earning these awards, these young men may grow in these virtues.

Lenten Regulations

Lent is beginning soon. All Catholics are reminded of the following Lenten regulations:

Ash Wednesday (February 14) and Good Friday (March 30) are days of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. On these two days, fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18-59. Absti-nence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly ex-cuse himself or herself from this obligation.

All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly ex-cused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obli-gation would not apply.

During this flu season, we ask parishioners to please use com-mon sense and consideration for their fellow parishioners. If you are sick, please stay home from Mass. If you are recover-ing or not feeling well, please refrain from receiving the Pre-cious Blood at communion, shaking hands during the sign of peace, and other behaviors which may transmit illness. Re-member that some of our parishioners, especially infants and the elderly, have weaker immune systems, and all of us can help keep each other healthy.

At every Mass, members of the faithful bring up the gifts of bread and wine. This is a symbolic gesture, reminding us that the Mass is not just the work of the priest. All of us take part in offering the sacrifice of the Eucharist. Here at St. Charles Borro-meo, the role of bringing up the gifts is not assigned. Anyone may do it. On the gifts table is a small statue. If your family would like to bring up the gifts at the offertory, simply take the statue before Mass. Please remember to return the statue at the end of Mass.

Canon 1029– After all circumstances have been

taken into account in the prudent judgment of the

proper bishop or the competent major superior,

only those should be promoted to orders who have

n integral faith, are motivated by a right intention,

possess the required knowledge, and enjoy a good

reputation, good morals, and proven virtues, and

other physical and psychological qualities which

are appropriate to the order to be received.

The above is what Canon Law says about

one who petitions the Archbishop to be ordained a

Deacon. Canon 1029 makes it clear that becoming

a Deacon is not about fulfilling requirements, it is

about an integrated lifestyle of love for Jesus

Christ and of service to the Church.

Following the age-old custom of the Church,

as maintained by Canon Law (Canon 1051, para-

graph 2), it is my privilege to announce publicly

that Mr. Steven Moeller is a candidate for the major

order of Sacred Diaconate, to be conferred on June

2, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica. An-

yone who knows any reason why this candidate

should not be ordained is bound to disclose this

immediately.

Please join me in prayer for Mr. Moeller and

for each of the diaconate candidates, that these

times of immediate preparation for ordination will

be times of extra-ordinary grace and abiding peace.

To minimize conflicts with other sports, practices will be held on Sunday afternoon—weather per-mitting—at the Duchesne High School track, starting in March. Meal A Month for February 2018

The Next Meal a Month grocery collection will be Feb-ruary 24/25, 2018. This food is distributed to needy families from the FISH food pantry. Items needed this month are Toilet Paper, Laundry Soap, Can Tomatoes, Miscellaneous Canned Beans, Canned sweet potatoes, Kleenex During the month of February only, we are also collect-ing non-condensed Chicken Noodle Soup for the Mini-Vinnies. We have some very special people at our parish, who not only contribute the food monthly, but those who collect it, and take it to the FISH distribution site. Thank you all for being God’s hands in this particular ministry.

Today we continue to read from Mark’s Gospel, learning more about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out de-mons. As we will see throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would have revealed it to those who were present.

On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was pursued by Simon and others who brought news that many people were looking for him. At this point in Mark’s Gospel, we begin to see a distinct role for the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples—they act as intermediaries between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to his disci-ples that they need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places.

Today’s Gospel completes a picture of Jesus’ ministry: preaching, curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to continue this work in another place. Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus did this throughout Galilee.

Jesus’ compassion and healing of the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of God. The Church continues to extend Christ’s healing presence to others in its ministry to the sick. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, for-giveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from illness.

In today’s Gospel we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’ daily life. Jesus rose early in the morn-ing, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a de-serted place to pray. When the disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus found guidance and direction from God. We also bring our decision-making to God in prayer, ask-ing for his guidance and direction in our lives.
