From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco

As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

-Fr. William Dotson

Thanksgiving

This week, our nation celebrates Thanks-giving. We remember that the one to whom we owe thanks first and foremost is

God, who has given us life and all of our many bless-ings. As St. Paul reminds us, “And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17).

As we give thanks to God, we invite all pa-rishioners to join us for a bilingual Mass on Thanks-giving Day, November 23, at 9am. The word “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving,” and celebrating the Mass is the best way we have to give thanks to Al-mighty God for all of the countless gifts He has given to us.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Emily Englehorn, a member of our parish and student at Incarnate Word Academy, for being chosen as one of the winning essays in the Annual Catholic Appeal Essay Scholarship.

Felicidades

Parish Picnic

We are still paying the final bills and collecting money from the sponsorships, but we can announce that the Parish Picnic raised about $40,000. Thank you to everyone who helped make the parish picnic so successful!

Picnic Parroquial

Giving Tree 2017 Announcements Giving Tree is the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul’s effort to help make Christmas special for families in need within our par-ish boundaries in our local community. Everyone can participate! Here’s how it works and how you can help: Refer: Families who live in our parish boundaries referred by school personnel, parishioners, or self referred and

must demonstrate that they are a family in crisis/need by SVDP. Donate: In November, St. Charles Borromeo classes hold their annual Food Drive. Food items gathered by classes

become our Christmas food baskets. There is enough to provide multiple meals for the holiday season. Adopt a Family: Families, friends and coworkers adopt a full family and spoil them with minimal gifts plus extra

special items. Contact Mary Medina if you are interested in adopting a full family. Any size family can be adopted. Pick Ornaments: Giving Trees go up in the Narthex on November 18th, giving you an opportunity to choose items

(ornaments) off the tree to shop for and wrap. All wrapped gifts need to be returned to church no later than December 10th SVCP and Mini Vinnies sort these packages and ready them for pick up on December 21st this

year. Donate: Some parishioners want to participate, but are unable to shop for items! A check

made out to SVDP and noted for Giving Tree is earmarked for meat purchased for meal, as well as missing gift items.

Hope everyone will participate as we join together to brighten the Christmas season for those less fortunate in our community. Mary Medina [email protected] or 636-699-9427

Have you been a sleephouse host for Luke 18 in the past?? If you have or if you are interested in being a sleephouse this year, please contact Kristin at [email protected].

The Giving Trees will be in the Narthex thru Dec. 9th. When returning your gifts please be sure the tags are taped securely to the package with the numbers and items showing. November 19, 2017-Gospel Background

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

November 19, 2017-Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need to do is be faithful in “small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you are sharing God’s extravagant love.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

A THANKFUL HEART A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the

parent of all the other virtues. --Cicero

This week’s Gospel speaks of how Jesus’ disciples are to conduct themselves as they await the Kingdom of Heav-en. In the preceding passages and in last week’s Gospel, Jesus taught that there is no way to predict the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. His disciples must, therefore, remain vigilant and ready to receive the Son of Man at any time.

Jesus’ parable talks about Christian discipleship using economic metaphors. Before he leaves on a journey, the master entrusts to his servants a different number of tal-ents, giving to each according to their abilities. A talent is a coin of great value. Upon the master’s return, he finds that the first and second servants have doubled their mon-ey, and both are rewarded. The third servant, however, has only preserved what was given to him because he was afraid to lose the money. He has risked nothing; he did not even deposit the money in a bank to earn interest. This servant is punished by the master, and his talent is given to the one who brought the greatest return.

Read in light of last week’s parable of the wise and fool-ish bridesmaids, this parable teaches that God’s judgment will be based on the service we render to God and to one another in accordance with the gifts that God has given to us. Our gifts, or talents, are given to us for the service of others. If we fail to use these gifts, God’s judgment on us will be severe. On the other hand, if we make use of these gifts in service to the Kingdom of Heaven, we will be rewarded and entrusted with even more responsibilities.

This Gospel reminds us that Christian spirituality is not passive or inactive. Our life of prayer helps us to discern the gifts that have been given to us by God. This prayer and discernment ought to lead us to use our gifts in the service of God and our neighbor. God’s grace allows us to share in the work of serving the Kingdom of Heaven.
