THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Page 2: Schedule of Holy Mass - SCB Parish · Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo! Gaudete / Rejoice! Sunday The third week of Advent begins with Gaudete Sun- day. Gaudete, meaning “Rejoice,”

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!

Gaudete / Rejoice! Sunday The third week of Advent begins with Gaudete Sun-day. Gaudete, meaning “Rejoice,” is the first word of the opening antiphon for the Mass on this day; Gaudete in Domino semper (Rejoice in the Lord always). The joy of Gaudete Sunday shows in the use of rose as the liturgical color—for example, on the Advent wreath. The Gospel readings for this Sunday reveal to us the reason for our joy: the coming of Jesus. He is the Word made flesh, the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Lord, I rejoice at the Good news of Your Coming. Make my heart ready.

Third Week of Advent

Wreath Prayer Our hope is in the coming of the Lord.

(two purple and one pink candle are lit)

Let us pray that we may grow in love for each other as the Lord comes to us. (pause for silent prayer)

Renew us in Your love, Lord, for with You we have nothing to fear. You pro-vide light for our darkness and warmth in the cold winter air. We sing Your praises for all You have done for

us. May we approach this holy Christmas season with a true spirit of gratitude. Amen.

An Advent Reflection Expectation was high for the Messiah’s coming; in fact, many asked John the Baptist whether he was the Messiah. But as he explained to the crowds who gath-ered, his water was no match for the fire of the Holy Spir-it to come. John issued a warning, however: “every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” (v. 3). This prompted the worried listeners to ask, “What then should we do?” In your Advent prayer, ask yourself, “What then should I do?” When you act with the intention of prepar-ing for the Christ, the possibilities for the fruit that you might bear are endless. With God, nothing is impossible!

Advent Prayer of the Week Thank You, God, for all of Your blessings, especially for the people in my life. Please help me to stay on the Advent path, and keep my heart focused on Christ in all that I say and do as I prepare for His holy birth at Christmas. Share with family or someone why I rejoice today: people and Jesus and moments.

Pope Francis’ Jubilee of Mercy “Be Merciful like your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36)

Pope Francis has composed a special prayer for the Jubilee Year of Mercy which will run from, December 8 2015, to November 20, 2016. Our Holy Father entreats the Lord to make the Jubilee of Mercy a year of grace so that all our Church: “Go out to every man and woman bringing the tenderness of God, so that the balm of Mercy may reach everyone, both believers and those far away.”

Pope Francis’ Prayer for the Jubilee of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Mat-thew from being enslaved by money; the adulter-ess and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his be-trayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glori-fied. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family,

A Holy Community through a Holy Communion. Your brother in Jesus,

From the Pastor’s Pen

Please join us in making this night a success! We would love to see all ministries there!

Christmas Novena The final week of Advent is near. If Advent is like the nighttime, these last days are like the hours before dawn. All nature is waiting for the sunrise. If Advent is like a woman’s pregnancy, now the baby is kicking in her womb. Soon the child will be born. These final days of Advent are a time of special prayer. The church sings the O Antiphons. These are beautiful chants that are sung at the Christmas Novena. There is an antiphon for each night from December 18 to December 23. They are called O Antiphons because each one begins with the word “O”. The antiphons include many of the titles of Christ, such as “Lord,” “lawgiver”, and “sun of jus-tice.” The song “O come, O come, Emmanuel” is a version of the O Antiphons that many people know and love. Please join us for this beautiful way to anticipate Christ’s birth. The Christmas Novena is celebrated each evening from December 18 thru 23. Tradition-al Advent hymns are sung, with readings from the great prophets and a brief homily. The Novena is a peaceful liturgy, enriching your Christmas prepara-tion. Please join us at 7:00 p.m. beginning Friday evening.

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All the Difference

Contributions for November 28/29

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treas-ure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” (Philippians 4: 6-7)

St. Paul reminds us that our God is an abundant God, the ultimate giver of gifts. He promises to give us all that we need. When we trust that God will take care of us, it is easier for us to share what we have been given.

We pray that we may take time to be grateful to God, who is the ultimate Giver of all gifts.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!

This Week With Your St. Charles Borromeo Family

MARRIAGE IN CHRIST HAS BEEN PROMISED BETWEEN: Sarah Beckering and Brian Wuelling

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK: Bernie Boschert, Mary Blodgett, Joyce & Bill Mersman, Pat Koenen.

Carol Fasching —mother of Becca & Scot McCullough; Brendan Myers—grandson of Jim & Kathy Anderson; Theresa Didion—daughter-in-law of Ruth Didion; Pat Sontag, mother of Trish and Ron Rattini;

and for the intentions on our Borromeo Prayer Tree and in our Book of Prayers

WE EXTEND OUR PRAYERFUL SYMPATHY FOR THE REPOSE OF THEIR SOULS: William Call, husband of Lois * Kathleen Bornhop

Rocio Jara, sister of Norma Flores * Tom Langwith, husband of Diana

The crowds approached John the Baptist and asked how they should live in order to be ready to follow the Messi-ah. John responded by telling them to share and to not take more than they are entitled to.

The people wondered if John might be the Messiah for whom they had been waiting, but he cleared up any mis-understanding by saying that he was not. For sure, the Messiah would come after John, but John was not worthy even to be the Messiah’s slave who would untie his san-dal.

How many times a day do parents, in the young lives of their children, preach this Gospel message: share and don’t take more than your share! Especially in the formative years, these are valuable social skills, but they are also life lessons for people of all ages. A part of our human nature wants to hoard—just in case.

This insecurity causes us to share only reluctantly, and if we take a little more than our share, we will have an extra amount in case we find ourselves in need. The message of this Gospel encourages us to change that thinking. If we act as God wants us to, others will share with us as well as we share with them. If we take only what we need, there will be enough for everyone.

Consider ways during this Advent season that your family can share with others. Check your parish bulletin or com-munity news page to see what opportunities might be available for giving to others this holiday season. There might be food or clothing drives, opportunities to visit or assist shut-ins.

How about the old-fashioned idea of caroling—especially to those who can’t get out or may be finding this holiday season especially difficult?

• There is much evidence in the world today that people do what John said in this Gospel. One way I see people share (or not take more than their share) is...

• The hardest thing for me to share is...

• by...

Pope Francis’ Monthly Prayer Intentions

Universal: Experiencing God’s mercy. That all may ex-perience the mercy of God, who never tires of forgiving.

Evangelization: Families. That families, especially those who suffer, may find in the birth of Jesus a sign of cer-tain hope.

Dear Parishioners:

Thank you to all who took a prayer card for a Confirmation student distributed at Masses last week. We are most appre-ciative of your prayers for all our children, especially those preparing to celebrate one of the Sacraments in the spring.

As we celebrate the third Sunday of Advent, we think of John the Baptizer, Jesus’ cousin, who prepared the way for the Messiah. The Lord brings the baptism of salvation and so we prepare for the salvation of the world! Perhaps you would like to rejuvenate your Advent preparation with this Calendar of Good Actions from Loyola Press:

Today, Dec 13 Ask Mary to help you make room for Jesus in your heart. Monday, Dec 14 Keep calm and don’t lose your temper when you are treated rudely. Tuesday, Dec 15 Do some work for your parents to help them rest after a day of work. Wednesday, Dec 16 Do what you can to please your parents and family in a special way today. Thursday, Dec 17 Do not complain today, even when you must do things you don’t want to. Friday, Dec 18 Thank God for all He has given us. Saturday, Dec 19 Do a kind act for each member of your family!

Our planning for the Luke 18 retreat in January is going wonderfully, thanks to the leadership of Sam Plummer and guid-ance of Mrs. Shelly Gotsch. Our parish teens are learning what it means to give their time, love, and attention to those students preparing for Confirmation. I am thankful for the leadership of several college students, many high school stu-dents from Borromeo and several adults who are preparing for the Luke 18 retreat!

Peace Be With You – Mrs. Becca McCullough

Dr. Timothy Gray presents an honest look at the blessings and struggles of MARRIAGE! He connects the Fall to daily marital struggles and explains how, like Adam and Eve, spouses can end up blaming instead of supporting each other. Dr. Gray also explains how words can heal and build up married life. Discover how to find or renew happi-ness in your marriage with Beloved.

This and other CDs are in the narthex. Please use the envelopes provided for your donation and place it in the weekend collection. Thanks!

Joke of the Week An elderly man was sitting on his porch when a young man walked up with a pad and pencil in his hand. “What are you selling, young man?” he asked. “I’m not selling anything, sir,” the young man replied, “I’m the census taker.” “A what?” the man asked. “A census taker. We are trying to find out how many people are in the United States.” “Well,” the man answered, “you’re wasting your time with me; I have no idea.”

Frequently Asked Questions What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? How do I register? All Catholics living within the parish boundaries and are regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does not make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs. You can regis-ter online, or by coming to the church office and filling out a short registration form.

How do I request a hospital visit, Communion call, Anointing of the Sick, or be put on the prayer list? Please call the church office at 946-1893.

How do I have my child Baptized? The parents must be registered in the parish and sign up for a baptismal preparation class, generally held the first Mon-day of the month. Baptisms are the first and third Sundays of each month at 1:00pm.

How do I get married in the Church? As soon as marriage is contemplated, contact one of the parish priests. Do not set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.

As you prepare your Christmas card list, you may wish to add two names from the past at St. Charles Borromeo. Bishop Paul Zipfel served as pastor at St. Charles Borromeo in 1988 until May of 1989 when he became Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis. Bishop Zipfel now resides at Mother of Good Counsel Home. Father Jim Edwards served as Associate Pastor at St. Charles Borromeo in the late 1970’s. He resides at the Regina Cleri Home. They would both love to hear from parish-ioners who remember them. Your kind words and Christmas blessings will let them know that you are thinking about and praying for them.
