Dear Friends,

I pray you are all well and keeping a spirit of hope in your heart. I remember one of the last things said at Mass before the CO-VID break was when Deacon Tom was referring to the “good old days” when people could gather in groups together. How true it has become! We are hoping and aiming for the weekend of Pentecost to open things up again. This is a big maybe.

If we are able to celebrate Mass together again, many CO-VID 19 changes will be in effect. I will share these changes with you in the coming weeks but two of the biggest will be wearing masks and social distancing for the entirety of the Mass. This will mean a limited number of people for the Saturday 4:30, Sun-day 10:00, and Sunday 6:00 Masses. More to follow.

All these changes and challenges will call forth from us cour-age, perseverance, and living our faith boldly. It reminds me of those little yellow flowers that poked their heads up everywhere in our beautiful green lawns recently. I have come to appreciate dandelions in recent years because of their perseverance. We dig them out, pull them out, mow them down and spray them with chemicals. But just when we thought we saw the last of them, they reappear, unintimidated, proudly displaying their bril-liant yellow color.

I learned dandelions are here to stay, and we will learn to co-exist. Like dandelions, we who have faith find courage and hope. We will continue to proudly proclaim that Jesus is our healing in these turbulent times. Man cannot fix man. Only God can fix man. Let your faith remain strong and ready to blossom once again.

Maybe when you were little, the first bouquet of flowers you gave your mother was a bouquet of dandelions. What a beauti-ful sign of faith and perseverance. To all Moms who are reading this, Happy Mother’s Day, and may your faith proudly blossom forth.

Have a good week! - Fr. David

Our Parish School of Religion has come to an end for this school year. Unfortunately, we did not get to have our farewells, hugs, First Communion and May Crowning. We are tentatively planning First Communion in Au-gust. We will finalize plans in June/July. Our Confirmation was scheduled to be in November. We have decided to postpone that special event until Spring 2021. We do not have a date at this time. We will not have Vacation Bible School this summer. Please keep all our children in your prayers. Faith is caught and not taught. Help your child/children to pray, learn the Saints of the day, and discover a Bible story!

Fifth Sunday of Easter www.saintchristophercc.com May 10, 2020

Homily from last Sunday By Deacon Byron

Good Morning Church! Oh how I long to say those words! I miss all of you terribly. In this time of uncertainty we find

comfort in knowing that Jesus is with us, always, until the end of time.

We can be remarkably adept at recognizing voices when those voices are significant to us. Think about the number of times you knew who had called you on the telephone after his or her first or second word — even in the days before we had

caller ID to help us!

In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches the same thing using the imagery of a shepherd and his flock. The shepherds bring their flocks back from the fields at night and herd them together in a large common enclosure. In the morning the shepherds return to the big pen and each in turn call out to his own sheep to follow. Remarkably, the sheep sort themselves out by flock in response to their shepherd’s voice. There is no confusion about this. Each sheep waits to hear its own shepherd’s voice before moving out. For the nourishment and guidance and care required to sustain life, each sheep recognizes the voice of its one true shepherd. We hear many voices in our world today telling us what to eat, to drink, and to wear, telling us what makes us happy. Jesus warns: Stop worrying over questions, like, “What are we to eat, what are we to drink, what are we to wear? Your Heavenly Father knows all that you need. Seek holiness and listen to his voice.” It was high noon in Manhattan. The streets were buzzing with activity: crowds of people scurrying to lunch; horns honk-ing; brakes screeching; a siren wailing. Two men were making their way together through the throng of people. One was a native New Yorker, the other a Kansas farmer on a visit. Suddenly the farmer stopped and said to the city dweller, “Hold on I hear a cricket!” His friend replied, “Are you kidding me? Even if there were a cricket around here, which isn’t likely, you would never be able to hear it over all the noise.” The farmer remained quiet for a moment, then walked several paces to the corner where a bush was growing in a large cement planter. He turned several leaves over and found the cricket. The city man was flabbergasted. “What great ears you have,” he said. “No,” the farmer replied, “your ears are as good as mine. It’s a matter of what you’ve been conditioned to listen for. I’ll show you.” Whereupon he pulled a handful of coins from his pocket and let them drop on the sidewalk. As if on signal, every head on the block turned. “You see,” said the farmer, “You hear what you want to hear. It’s a matter of what you are listening for.” You hear what you want to hear. You hear what you are listening for. God never gives up on you. God never stops invit-ing you to be his own. The Good Shepherd always keeps you within calling distance. If you don’t hear him its not because he is too far away it’s because you are listening for other voices. St. Paul and the Gospel writers are conveying the mes-sage of hope through the Holy Spirit and their experience of Jesus. Are you listening? They try to tell us of a Love beyond all measure. Are you listening? They try to tell us of hope beyond reason. Are you listening? They tell us of abundant life offered to all. Are you listening? PEACE AND LOVE! HAPPY EASTER!
