Engineers Schneider Structural Engineers is providing structural design

for CIRIrsquos new iconic corporate headquarters office building located at

the CIRI Land Development Companyrsquos new Fireweed Business Center

in Anchorage Alaska The new 110000‐sq‐ft

8‐story steel framed office building will feature a 3‐story open atrium

raking steel columns cantilevered composite steel floor plates a

1600‐sq‐ft third story balcony and will be the latest in energy

efficient design This building is the first of several structures that

will be developed within this new business campus

ldquoThis is a dream project for a structural engineerrdquo said Nicholas

Choromanski PE and lead structural engineer ldquoThe structure has

many exciting elements that have challenged the engineering team to

both achieve a cost‐efficient design while maintaining the

architectural visionrdquo One of the more challenging aspects of the

structural design is the cantilevered floor plates which extend a bay of

framing up to 15 feet beyond the buildingrsquos perimeter support columns

at each end of the building RIM wanted to take full advantage of the

cantilevers as one of the buildingrsquos significant architectural features

Schneider worked closely with RIM to develop a framing system that

would push the limits of the cantilevers while providing a cost‐

effective design striking a balance between strength and efficiency
