SCHOLARS’ DAY GUEST SPEAKER

11:00 AM (Brindley Auditorium)

Dr. Benjamin Pierce received a B.S. in Biology from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Colorado. In 2005, he joined the faculty at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, where he is Professor of Biology and holder of the Lillian Nelson Pra Chair. His research interests focus on popula on gene cs, ge-ne cs, evolu on, and ecology of amphibians and curriculum and course development, including mul disciplinary science, community-based research, and gene cs instruc on. In 2012-2013 he also received the Exemplary Teaching Award at Southwestern University from the Board of Higher Educa on and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. On a lighter note, the gene cs class at UMHB is currently using the textbook he authored — “Gene cs: A Conceptual Approach”.

Ecology and Natural History of theGeorgetown Salamander, Eurycea naufragia

Abstract: The Georgetown salamander, Eurycea naufragia, is aspring and cave dwelling salamander that is known from only 15sites in central Texas. Rapid urbaniza on throughout its rangeputs all known popula ons at risk and the species is currentlybeing considered for lis ng under the Endangered Species Act.Li le is known about its natural history or ecology. Over the pastsix years, undergraduate students at Southwestern Universityand I have conducted ecological studies of the Georgetown salamander at two sites. Our results suggest that popula ons of thesalamander are rela vely small, that adults breed primarily inwinter and early spring, and that movement of salamanderswithin a spring is limited. These studies provide basic ecologicalinforma on that can be used to develop a long term conservaon plan for the species.
