TENTATIVE MINUTESHendry County School Board

Workshop Session

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

The Hendry County School Board met in Workshop Session beginning at 1:05 p.m. in theSchool Board Meeting Room, Hendry Co. Courthouse, 2nd Fl., 25 E. Hickpochee, LaBelle, FL.Those in attendance were: Sally Berg, Chairman; Jon Basquin, Vice Chairman; John Benkertand Stephanie Busin, Members; and Paul K. Puletti, Superintendent.

Chairman Berg opened the workshop and Superintendent Puletti announced that this workshopwas scheduled to discuss the School Board Policy Update. Mr. Tom Young, Esq. and FrancesSt. James, NEOLA Representatives, were present.

Mr. Young and Mrs. St. James presented the clean version of the By Laws that the Board workedon at the last workshop and answered questions posed by Board Members. Board Members thenreviewed the 1000, 3000, and 4000 policies that district staff had completed.

The Workshop ended at 1:55 p.m.

Regular MeetingTuesday, February 23, 2016

The Hendry County School Board met in Regular Session beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the SchoolBoard Meeting Room, Hendry Co. Courthouse, 2nd Fl., 25 E. Hickpochee, LaBelle, FL. Those inattendance were: Sally Berg, Chairman; Jon Basquin, Vice Chairman; John Benkert andStephanie Busin, Members; Paul K. Puletti, Superintendent; and Warren Ross, Acting Attorney.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Berg.

Pledge & Invocation — Chairman Berg led the Board and guests in the Lord's Prayer and theSalute to the U. S. Flag.

Recognitions -

UES Bookmark Contest Winner – Mr. Larry Luckey, Upthegrove Elementary SchoolPrincipals, introduced the Bookmark Contest Winners for each grade level that was heldduring Celebrate Literacy Week. School Board Members and Superintendent Puletticongratulated each of them on the achievement.

Lucia Aguiar, LHS Teacher - 2017 Hendry County Teacher of the Year - SuperintendentPuletti and Board Members recognized Lucia Aguiar, LHS Teacher, for being selected as the2017 Hendry County Teacher of the Year. Chairman Berg presented Mrs. Aguiar with aplaque on behalf of the Board.

William "Bill" Murray - 2016 Henry County Employee of the Year - The Superintendentand Board Members recognized William "Bill" Murray, Master Maintenance - LaBelleMaintenance Department, for being selected as the 2016 Henry County Employee of the Year.Board Member Benkert presented Mr. Murray with a plaque on behalf of the Board.

Public Comments - Chairman Berg asked if there was anyone in the audience that would like toaddress the Board regarding any agenda item. There was no response.

Item for Action –

1. Hearing - Policy 546 (Anti-Fraud and Procedures) as Advertised – Chairman Bergopened the hearing and asked if anyone wished to speak regarding the advertised policy.

There being no input, Chairman Berg closed the hearing.

On motion by Jon Basquin and second by Stephanie Busin, the Board unanimouslyaccepted the recommendation of the Superintendent that Policy 546 (Anti-Fraud andProcedures) be approved as advertised. (See Superintendent’s File)

Note: Mr. Michael Yanosik, Chief Financial Officer, provided a financial update for BoardMembers and answered questions posed.

Board Member Business -

1. Superintendent Puletti informed Board Members that he would like to schedule a workshop inApril to discuss Emergency Procedures & Trainings.

2. Chairman Berg requested the Superintendent to investigate the possible effects of the Boardholding one meeting a month instead of two and report back to the Board at the next meeting.

3. Board Member Busin stated that she recently attended a FSBA forum on Boardsmanship andlearned that other boards assigned a specialized area for each board member to report on duringa workshop or other designated time on the agenda to provide updates. She inquired if theywould like to implement this idea to capitalize on the areas of expertise and passion of eachBoard Member. Board Members were interested in this concept and were to think about whatareas they would be comfortable in representing to be discussed at a future meeting.

4. Board Member Busin requested input from fellow board members on preparing a Request forQualifications (RFQ) for Legal Services.

After the discussion, it was moved by Stephanie Busin, seconded by John Benkert, andapproved unanimously that district staff develop a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for LegalServices.

Adjournment - There being no further business, Chairman Berg adjourned the meeting at 6:35p.m.
