Message from the Principal

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your patience in waiting for the Parent /Teacher Interviews to be concluded. The teachers were glad to meet you, some for the first time. Having that direct connection is so important if we are to support the children as they move through their schooling. Teachers are starting to prepare for the written reports which will be presented at the end of term.

Starting today our year 3s and 5s (and yr7s and 9s if you have them) will be sitting down to commence the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) along with every other child in those classes across the country. Parents will,in time, receive feedback on how their children have faired in this testing package. This information mirrors the work contained in the student work sample portfolio, since it is the picture captured on the day.

As a school, we will await the return of the grouped data to check our performance in the teaching of the subjects with the aim of improving areas that need attention. These tests sit beside our own pre-tests, reading running records, spelling checks that all contribute to us having a clear picture of your child’s ‘point of need’, or ‘the next stage that needs to be taught’.

Please ensure your children have a good breakfast, are at school on time and our teachers will do the rest in administering the tests in a supportive, calm environment.

Prep 2018 Parent Information Night – Wed 17th May Come along and meet the prep team and specialists as we outline our programs at Montrose. If you know of any kinder parents whose children will be starting school next year, let them know about this night. We start at 7.00pm!

Education Week is coming!!! Book up the Grandparents! Grandparents day is set for Tuesday May 23 from 9.00 finishing with morning tea in the hall! I hope to see all our friends from last year again.

Message from the Principal (cont.)

Is this you? Can you help? I had a conversation this morning with a representative of the Montrose Spinal Clinic who, along with the Chemist are struggling with our parents who are parking in their carpark at the end of the day. Their issues are based around safety for our children, as they tend to walk in and around and between the cars as they

reverse and then swing out of the carpark.

Patients who use the Spinal Clinic are not in the same physical condition as those who might be heading off to the gym. Quite often these elderly (sometimes), but incapacitated (always) folk are forced into parking down the street quite some distance. The extended walk is something they should not have to put up with. Whereas, our kids at Montrose Primary School are fit, active and able to walk a bit further before hopping into the car. A last point is that the carpark at the Spinal Clinic is a private carpark and should be respected as such.

Wednesday was our first soup service for the year. The children

enjoyed Potato and Leek soup and nearly all of the cups came back empty which was a great sign. Can you please help us with the return of soup cups by reminding your children to bring their soup cup and lid back to the canteen during lunch time. As Grades 3-6 completed their Cross Country just before lunch we had many classes knocking on the door to see if they could have their lunch orders early. With all the food and soup ready to go, we were happy to accommodate. Claire Seymour very generously helped in the canteen for the second Wednesday in a row and Claire often fills in when I’m short of volunteers, I am incredibly appreciative of Claire’s ongoing support. On Friday I was attending a funeral and left the running of the canteen in the very safe hands of Kate Critchley and a great team of helpers. Kate did an amazing job ensuring everything ran smoothly and I thank Andrea McGill, Gemma Heemskerk and Anne Allen for supporting Kate and ensuring the children all received their lunches. I returned at 1.30pm to find the canteen quietly pumping along with everything in hand.

If you can help in the canteen on a Wednesday 9am - 3pm or a half day 9am - 12pm or 12 - 3pm please call Amanda on 0428 380 432 What can I buy? NEW HOMEMADE “SNICKERS SLICE”

We are trialling a Montrose famous home made Snickers Slice. Snickers Slice will be available from this week for $1.50 per slice (Gluten Free). Please Note: Our Snickers Slice includes Peanut Butter and Crushed nuts so is not suitable for those with nut allergies. Amanda

What is it?

Purposefulness is being very clearly focused on something. It is having a goal; knowing what

you want to do and why you want to do it.

Purposefulness is concentrating your efforts on your goal so that it will happen. When you are being purposeful, you can achieve just about

anything.

This term’s Key for Success is Organisation. The habits of mind that go with the Organisation Key are: Planning your time and Setting goals.

Our YCDI Award winners for this week are:

Bonnie Mc, PJ: This Prep J student has been organised from her first day in prep. She brings

her red folder to school every day and reminds her classmates of where to put them and to get them out of their bags. She listens carefully to instructions to make sure she can complete a task to the best of her ability. Her workspace and chair bag is always tidy and organised so that she can start her tasks straight away. Thank you for coming to school every day with a positive attitude and a smile on your face. Well done Bonnie Mc.

Ella Mc, 1S: This 1S student bounces into school with a smile on her face, organised and ready

to go for the day. She is an exceptional listener and is never shy to ask questions. She is incredibly helpful, be it explaining something to a friend or tidying up without being asked. Keep up the fantastic organisation! Well done Ella Mc, 1S!

Abbey H, 3B: On Opposite Day, this student would leave her bag in the middle of the corridor. She would enter the classroom, empty her tub, cover the inside with pencil shavings and scrunched up pieces of scrap paper, then throw all the books back into the tub in random order. If it was Opposite Day, she’d probably dump her pencil case out on the floor and kick the contents around the room. She’d waste her time during work sessions playing with Fidget Spinners - if it was Opposite Day. On Opposite Day, she might even dip her finger in the yogurt from her lunchbox and draw a picture with it on her table. Fortunately, Opposite Day doesn’t happen often. Congratulations, Abbey H. from 3B, for your outstanding organisation and time management!

Bonnie Mc, Prep J Why do you think you got the award? For being organised. My Hero is: Daddy because he is the “fart monster”. My favourite thing about school is: Playing with my friend Lucy. When I grow up I want to be a: Vet.

Ella Mc, 1S Why do you think you got the award? For being organised. My Hero is: Mum. My favourite thing about school is: Writing. When I grow up I want to be a: Gymnastics teacher.

Abbey H, 3B Why do you think you got the award? Because I’m really nice. My Hero is: My Mum. My favourite things about school are: Art and playing with my friends. When I grow up I want to be a: Vet.
