WHY ESTABLISH A WORKSITE WELLNESS

It takes a committee to promote, and organize

wellness efforts in order to change culture, and

influence policy to cultivate a healthy worksite

environment.

Wellness Teams champion, inspire and model

healthy behaviors for staff and students.

Wellness Teams help to promote and drive wellness

efforts for the organization.

Wellness Teams ensures wellness efforts will be kept

ALIVE in the organization.

Wellness Teams help to establish healthy lines of

communication between staff from ALL

organizational levels.

WORKSITE WELLNESS COMMITTEE

KEYS FOR SUCCESS

Committee members do not need a background in health, be the perfect size and/or shape, be an athlete, or a vegetarian BUT should be committed to their own personal wellness.

Committee members must be willing to commit to their commitment to their team and be willing to meet regularly over a twelve-month period. A minimum of six recommended meetings should be

held within in this period.

A committee leader or chairperson should be appointed, elected or selected.

Remember that the wellness committee does not act independently but rather act as representatives of their school or site or district.

Enlist your leadership (if they are not the drivers of the program) team. ENGAGE them in the program.

Committee must be willing to collect information from colleagues in the form of surveys set goals, monitor program progress, seek feedback and collect data in order to evaluate and adjust program accordingly.

Evaluate the effectiveness of the program and interventions annually

TESTIMONIALS

This program encouraged me to make better healthy choices through many opportunities to exercise, trying new dietary programs and engaging in stress reduction activities which all led to me no longer needing an anti-depressant. I have been smoke free for 7 months and have lost 5 pounds. I eat more diverse, healthier foods, I share the information I receive with my extended family. Without the wellness program I may have had a total mental collapse... LIFE was so difficult this year. The Wellness Program gave me hope for myself, that I could at lest control my own life and make good decisions to lead a healthy, meaningful life. I take time to sit by myself and breathe slowly after taking the “Lessen your Stressin” class. This keeps me calm and has decreased my stress level.

FEEDBACK

• The EPS wellness program seems like a waste of money. I realize a healthier employee is what your strive fro, but in this economy I believe the district should pay their educators to educate not plan wellness programs.

• I’m concerned that our health benefits are being used for this without a vote and total disclosure about the costs to our benefits program. I certainly agree that focusing on healthy life styles is important but am not sure I want to pay for others to do this”

• I’m sorry, but as educated people, I feel we already are perfectly aware of things and lifestyles that are healthy and unhealthy.

• I don’t think the wellness program is necessary and is a waste of money. Educated adults should be able to find their services outside of school.

What other methods can YOU think of to monitor the

effectiveness of your program and or your team’s wellness

efforts?
