Trim Trails

SURFACE PRO CON Relative Cost to Buy

Relative Cost to Maintain

Bark Relatively inexpensive, more organic look, soft fall surface

Messy as it spreads and needs collecting and replacing as it beds down and is lost

Low Medium

Grass Matting Synthetic mat which allows grass to grow through, but provides some level of all weather use

Grass needs maintaining and can still become boggy and unusable if not cared for

Medium

Medium

Polymeric(recycled tyres)

Good porous surface with soft fall characteristics

Expensive to buy and replace, but can be patched with kit from manufacturer

High Medium

Synthetic Turf Soft fall, relatively all weather if looked after properly

Relatively expensive to buy and replace and needs care and attention

High Medium

Tarmac Good porous hard wearing, relatively easy to repair surface and low maintenance

Hard surface, relatively expensive and need good foundation

High Low

TRIM TRAIL SAFETY SURFACESThe trail can be laid into grass or existing tarmac, but other surfaces can be used with various benefits and problems. To create a tarmac area allow around £40.00 per square metre.•To create a polymeric allow around £70.00 per square metre. N.B. this does not allow for project management costs, inflation, contingency or some costs associated with edging and boundary treatment of the surface.

Key Questions about Community Use •Strategic priorities

• Are there sections of your community that would really benefit from using your facilities? Could you target them through your community programme?

•What is the school vision regarding community use? What do you want your key outcomes to be? •Where does community use impact on the School Improvement Plan •Responsibilities •Which member of staff will be responsible for overseeing community use? Which sub-committee will monitor this? •Policies and procedures •How will pricing be determined, how will it be reviewed and how often? How will groups will be vetted and monitored? •What booking procedures are in place? •What is the school doing to protect themselves against risk? •correct insurance policy•safeguarding procedures•right to work•operating and emergency procedures•maintenance & safety of the site (risk assessments, loan working, site security)•conditions of hire and payment schedules

Page 27: School Facilities and Environments PE and Sport Cycling Active Play Environmental Management Funding

Monitoring performance •Is there a business plan in place? Is there a community use budget separate from the school budget? Are the governors happy with predicted income and expenditure? •What will happen to any surplus income? Does the school have a •sinking fund to replace facilities in the future?•Does the school have any key participation targets linked to•External funding?•Do you know who to contact for advice on increasing usage? eg Active Bradford CBMDC Sport and Leisure Services •What key performance indicators have been set to measure impact?
