Dear Parents

We have had a fantastic start to the autumn term! I am extremely proud to welcome our new Year 7 students and their families to the Haygrove ‘family’. We have also received new students in other year groups too, and I want to wish them, and the whole of Year 7, a happy and successful journey through our school.

I also want to congratulate last year’s Year 11 students on their stunning achievements and also thank our highly committed staff for all the support they provided, particularly in the latter stages of the year. We are so proud of them all.

The autumn term is now well underway and I am pleased to observe that our students are well engaged in their learning. It is so important that at this stage of the year all students are establishing effective learning routines both in school and at home. I am also keen to see every student involved with at least one extra-curricular activity. Information about our extra curricular programme is available on the back page of Heads Up or on our website.

We are expecting to receive a visit from Ofsted during this term and I would encourage you, as parents, to express your views about Haygrove School via the Ofsted ‘Parent View’ website which you can access from the school website home page www.haygroveschool.co.uk. Thank you, in advance, for your support.

For the safety of our students, particularly at the start and end of the school day, I must ask parents not to drive onto the school site, unless by prior arrangement, or to collect a student for medical reasons. I would also advise you to avoid parking in the bus lay-by, particularly if the buses are already arriving. I appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

I would now like to wish all our students another successful year at

Haygrove. If you have any concerns regarding any aspect of your

child’s education, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Yours sincerely

Karen Canham

School Health Clinic

Having trialled the drop in health clinic for the summer term of 2015, we are pleased to announce that we will be operating it again every Tuesday lunch-time from this term onwards.

The principle aim of the drop in health clinic is to provide a confidential advice service on a range of issues affecting young people. Support could include advice on sexual health, emotional health and well-being (e.g. self-harming), healthy lifestyles and alcohol safety. Young people will also have access to the c-card system, contraception and chlamydia screening kits.

Other schools in the area already offer this service and have noticed that young people are encouraged to make healthier life choices, self-esteem is raised and they are more confident when using mainstream health and welfare services. The clinic is run by a qualified nurse and each young person is individually assessed to ensure the most appropriate support and advice is offered.

If you have any questions or queries about the health clinic, please contact the School

Nursing Team on 01278 410044

Extremism and Radicalisation STUDENT LOCKERS

From September 2015, student lockers will be provided by Independent Lockers Solutions (ILS Ltd). Students can rent a new locker for the academic year (September – July) for an annual fee of £22.00. Parents with more than one child at the school can choose for their children to share a locker.

Students entitled to Free School Meals may be eligible for support from the Pupil Premium fund. Please contact Mrs Witts if you need further information on whether your child qualifies for Pupil Premium funding for a locker.

A letter was sent home at the end of the Summer Term (dated 8 July 2015) explaining how to apply to rent a locker. A copy of this letter can be found on the school website: www.haygroveschool.co.uk/school-life/student-lockers

NEW SCHOOL PREFECTS

Year 11 students Sion

Wilson and Ellie

Newton have been

selected to be the

school’s Head Boy

and Head Girl for the

coming academic

year. They will be supported by fellow students Felix

Temple and Eloise Jarvis who will act as their Deputies.

The four exceptional youngsters were selected by the

Headteacher, Mrs Canham, after a thorough selection

process and they will now head up a team of over 40

School Prefects, all of whom are expected to act as

exemplary role models for the younger students at the

school and help the new Year 7s to settle into school life.

SHOW MY HOMEWORK (SMHW)

All Haygrove School teaching staff are now expected to set homework tasks and submission deadlines using the online tool, ‘Show My Homework’.

All students have been issued with ‘Show My Homework’ log-ins PINS. Remember—Parents can also log-in to ‘Show My Homework’ to see what homework their child has been set.

For help and advice visit: www.haygroveschool.co.uk/

curriculum/show-my-homework

Haygrove School has a statutory duty under the Counter-

Terrorism and Security Act 2015 and the statutory

Prevent Guidance 2015 to have a due regard to the need

to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.

Extremism is defined as the ‘vocal or active opposition to

fundamental values of our society, including democracy,

the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and

tolerance of different faiths and beliefs”. Radicalisation is

defined as “the act or process of encouraging extremist

views or actions in others, including forms of extremism

leading to terrorism.’

Staff are expected to be vigilant in protecting students

from the threat of radicalisation and should refer any

concerns to the Mr Walters. Staff will receive appropriate

training to ensure they have the knowledge and

confidence to identify pupils at risk, challenge extremist

ideas and know where and how to refer concerns.

Our students also receive information on this topic

through assemblies which is then followed up in tutor

time, with curriculum time in RE and Citizenship used to

educate the students on Extremism and Radicalisation.

Our duties include:

Training Staff to understand the issues of radicalisation

and violent extremism.

Understanding the local risks and threats.

Being alert for students ‘at risk’ of being radicalised.

Working in partnership with the Local Authority/other

Agencies.

Keeping students safe online.

If you have any concerns about any of our students,

please to not hesitate to contact the school.

Could you spare a day to accompany a school trip? We believe field trips are an essential part of learning, but sometimes it is difficult to release staff from their day to day duties to ensure appropriate adult to child ratios are maintained. We urgently need parents to sign-up as volunteers who we can contact when we need additional helpers for a school trip.

To find out more or register your interest, please email: Claire Morgan, School Activities Administrator at [email protected]
