……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… WELCOME BACK TO OUR YEAR 3-6 STUDENTS
Principal’s Report Pamela Streete Dear Parents and Guardians, Return to whole student cohort to school
Thank you to all members of the school community in assisting us with such a smooth transition back for all
students last week. The restrictions regarding parents on site will continue until further advice from DET.
The students did exceptionally well by following instructions as well as entering and exiting the designated school
gates daily.
Thank you to ALL staff for their excellent contribution to ensuring all students were firstly well cared for in terms
of their wellbeing and assisting students to settle back to both school and class routine.
The energy and excitement of all students back at school is a powerful affirmation of a happy and engaged GW
student body. The scene of younger siblings guiding older brothers and sisters through the gate entry process on
the first day was heart-warming. For those who didn’t have a sibling at school they also demonstrated amazing
fortitude in managing their return to school. Taking in their stride the modified entry and exit approach planned for
them, with many planning for the following days, arrangements to walk or ride to school with peers, reconnecting
friendships lost during the remote learning period. The level of confidence and independence on display during this
time should be captured and valued as we move back to normal school routine.

Capturing the voice of the community
It was, during the remote learning experience, incredible to see what was achieved due to
the hard work of both students and students, teachers, support staff and parents/carers.
There is a strong voice from DET that this experience should be seen as opportunities for
innovation and transformation in education.
Glenroy west is taking the opportunity to reflect on how we can learn from this experience.
This experience should provide us with an opportunity to rethink past assumptions about
learning, teaching, student voice and agency, engagement, and to learn from the innovations
that have emerged during this time. GW has adopted an internationally recognised
philosophy and approach to teaching and learning with a learner centred curriculum. As a
school there is an opportunity to consider and plan to build back better and different learner
centred curriculum, not just revert back to normal. In doing so we have already begun to
capture the voice of the staff and students in different ways to see how we can benefit and
grow from this experience.
Capturing the voice of the community and understanding how as parents/ carers you
experienced flexible and remote learning is the next point in working collaboratively to
understand the impact of this change.
A Community Survey will be sent via Compass.
We would appreciate responses to the questions posed by as many members of the
community as possible. Your opinions and voice is highly valued.
The survey will be open until the last day of term 2, Friday 26th June 2020.
MOBILE PHONES
A reminder of key elements of the school mobile phone policy introduced in Term 1 2020.
Requires that
Students who bring mobile phones to school must have them switched of and
securely stored during school hours
The school provides secure storage for mobile phones that are brought to school
Mobile phones owned by students are brought to school at the owner’s risk like any other
personal item.
If a family chooses to provide their child with a phone to bring to school please note:
Mobile phone is handed in at the office each morning by 8.50am
At the end of the school day, after 3.15pm they are required to collect their phone
from the office.
It is important note that whilst the school provides secure storage it is the responsibility of
the student to ensure they hand the phone into the school office am daily. Teachers or other
staff do not store the phone for them.

Student Progress Reporting:
At Glenroy West, reporting student learning progress and achievement is part of the important
cooperative relationship between the school, trust and parents. It also involves two way
communication, mutual responsibility, respect and trust. The complete process serves to build
engagement of parents and increase knowledge relating to the comprehensive nature of
assessment and reporting in schools.
DET along with the VCAA provide the framework, expectations and guidelines, for schools
regarding reporting on student achievement. The requirement for all Victorian schools is to
report on achievement against the Victorian curriculum achievement standards at least twice a
year for every student.
The Department of education and Training (DET) has adjusted the expectations of Student
Reports for semester one in recognition of the transition to remote and flexible learning during Term 2. In
recognition that schools have adopted revised teaching and learning plans for Term 2, schools must provide:
A description of the Victorian curriculum F-10 taught
A succinct descriptive assessment of student learning achievement, based on the Achievement standards
in the Victorian curriculum F-10, for the subject areas taught
A comment on how the student has adjusted to the remote and flexible learning environment with
reference to the Personal and Social Capability curriculum

Semester One Student Reports
Semester One Student Reports will be available for download via Compass from Tuesday 23rd June. A notification
will be sent via Compass when they are ready for download.
Our Semester report does look a little different this year due to the extended remote learning.
Students were required to complete assessment tasks, undertake conferences with their teachers and submit daily
work tasks. Teachers have used this information to write your child’s Semester report. Some students did not
submit work for some curriculum areas and therefore have not been assessed on that area.
You will notice that the comments for English, Mathematics and Specialists relate to assessment Learning Tasks
that were sent to students. If you would like more information on what was assessed in the Learning Task, you are
still able to access all Learning Tasks in your child’s Compass profile.
Curriculum areas that have not been taught or assessed this semester will be assessed next semester.
You will have the opportunity to discuss in more depth your child’s achievements and areas for improvement in
the 3-Way Conference occurring on Wednesday 24th June and Thursday 25th June.
Please ensure you read the Semester Report before your conference time so you can discuss any concerns. You
can also email your child’s teacher if you require more information.
