The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme Year 9/10Well done to our ‘brilliant’ Year 9 and 10 students for completing the Scholars Programme. They successfully produced a 2000 word assignment on Marco Polo and the famous silk trade route connecting Europe to Asia. The work was of university standard and students even received a degree-based grade. Very big congratulations to Hannah Townson and Oliver Pugh who secured a 1st. This means they gained more than 70%! I cannot put into words just how phenomenal this achievement is. All the students who took part did exceptionally well. I am overwhelmed with these outcomes and the way they rose to the challenge. Each student is now on a certain path towards living out high aspirations and making their dreams a reality.

Rewards and Recognition

Year 13 Stand DownThis week, our Year 13 students leave Sixth Form to start their exciting, aspirational and inspirational futures! We have thoroughly enjoyed observing and supporting them discover their future aspirations, to challenge themselves through their subjects, discover and conquer their weaknesses and enhance their strengths. They have been great company, full of laughter and a great positive welcome in the corridors. We wish them luck, but they will definitely not require it. They are determined, driven and informed. I look forward to handing over the baton and following their lead!

Prefects The Year 10 prefects have formed small working groups to focus on a series of projects to enhance life in school. The following proposals have been put forward:

Community Mural - A group of prefects wish to design and paint a large mural on an outside space in school to promote community cohesion and tolerance. They would like this to be eye-catching and include lots of different people across the school. We look forward to the potential designs!

KS3 Lunchtime Interhouse - Another group of prefects have got together to plan a series of Interhouse tournaments which could take place at lunchtimes to further engage KS3 students in extra-curricular activities.

Year 7 Self Esteem Workshop - A group want to run some self esteem workshops for boys and girls in Year 7, focussing on establishing self esteem and confidence through games and interactive activities.

Cultural Awareness - Finally, a group of students will be working on a Cultural Awareness project, aiming to raise awareness about a different aspect of culture each week in form time.

KS3 Council Environmental Impact and Charity Work :

Bottles - The Student Council are continuing to collect plastic bottles and the competition has been extended beyond half term. Some forms have managed to collect over 170 bottles in two weeks! Other forms are now getting more involved in the competition. All bottles will either be recycled (rather than thrown away) or used as Ecobricks within school.

Crisp Packets - The KS3 Council have also identified, after talking to their forms, two local charities to donate money raised through the collection of crisp packets. The school is doing incredibly well so far. Lead magnificently by Mrs Wheatley, we have collected over 47kg of crisp packets! For each kg collected, we receive £1. The money is rapidly stacking up! We will donate all money collected by December to local charities. The Student Council have decided any money raised should go to SASH, a local charity which aims to prevent homelessness in young people aged between 16-25 in North and East Yorkshire and Jessie’s Fund, a charity which aims to help children with additional and complex needs or serious illness to communicate by using music.

Student VoiceAs part of our regular meetings, as well as trying to improve the school together, students have the opportunity to raise any concerns or issues they might have.

Year 7 Assessments - The Year 7s talked confidently about the assessments they were doing this week and about how they were important as they would help them, gradually, get used to exams in Year 11. Mr Williams asked if they felt they had been fully prepared for them and everyone on the council agreed they had been. Mr Williams also checked that they weren’t feeling any unnecessary stress or anxiety around the assessments. Students commented that they felt they could talk to somebody if they were worried.

NB: If you are concerned about your child or have any queries about the end of year assessments, please do get in touch.

One suggestion offered by the Council was the importance of testing the definition of key words, not just the spelling. This is really important and has been fed back to teachers.

Homework - Students talked about how they liked the supporting documents, such as glossaries and guides given to them to help with their homework. They said it was important that every teacher remembered to give them this to help them with their homework to ensure they didn’t get a detention. Mr Williams also reminded them that teachers are available during specific lunchtimes to help with homework if they need it. It was also a good time to remind students about the end of year rewards coming up for those who have completed all their homework.

Toilets - Students raised concerns and about how the toilets could be improved, highlighting the need for sinks to be working all the time and how busy these areas can be. Mr Williams has forwarded their comments and reminded students about the importance of using the toilets designated to their area to avoid congestion. All these points have been passed to the site team and necessary changes are underway.

CricketThe Y7 cricket team made the short journey to Bootham School on Tuesday evening. Bootham decided to field first and despite some quality bowling, in 12 overs AHS managed to score a very respectable 78/2. Jo Hall scored a number of impressive boundaries before retiring. All of our bowlers played well and made it difficult for the opposition to score. Bootham ran us close, but only managed to make 63/1. It was fantastic to see Lottie play her first game for the school. Dylan Tasker deserves a special mention for his sportsmanship and impeccable attitude. The weather was perfect and there was some top quality cricket on display!

The Year 9 cricket team suffered a narrow defeat against Pocklington School in the second round of the Cricket Cup. Will Leonard opened and produced a steady knock, staying in for just over 9 overs, but others werent able to increase the run rate. AHS finished on 47-5 after 16 overs. The team knew they were going to have to bowl and field well to stand a chance of victory. They started brightly with early wickets from Fenton, George and James. We managed to keep the socre really close, but eventually Pock’s batting quality showed and despite taking 7 wickets Pocklington were deserrved winners and go into the next round. All the team played really well and should be proud of their efforts. Player of the match goes to Fenton for his wickets.

Mixed Football Cup Final FortunesCongratulations to the Y9 football team who won the York & District Cup last week. They played some outstanding passing

football to overcome Joseph Rowntree School 6-3 in the final at Hamilton Panthers FC. Charlie Petch scored four times and Matty Barber and Dimitri Georgiou chipped in with

one each.It was a fitting end to a brilliant season in which they have also lifted the County Cup.

It was, however, a case of glorious defeat for the Y7’s in their York & District Cup final. In a very closely fought and high quality

encounter, they lost 5-4 on penalties to Selby.A fine Harry Pool goal gave the boys the lead, but a Selby equaliser ensured the game itself finished with a 1-1 draw.

The whole squad deserve much praise for their excellent attitude and performance both in the final and throughout the season.

TrampoliningMia Mae Deighton (Year 11) has been shortlisted for the York Active Sports Person of the Year award for her continued efforts in trampolining. We are all agreed that Mia would be a worthy winner!
