School Newsletter Term 3 Week 1 2018 Welcome to this first edition of our school newsletter for Term 3. I hope that you managed to have a good break it was so good to see the sunshine! This term has started well, with a good number of new students arriving at our school some for a short-term visit, and some who will stay for at least the rest of this year. I would like to welcome all of them, and hope they and their families enjoy their association with our school. During the holidays, a group of our students and two teachers travelled to China on the first of our Panda camps. I was fortunate enough to be able to see them off at the airport along with their families. To be fair, I think there was quite a level of apprehension, mixed with excitement as they went through security, but I have heard that they had a wonderful time sightseeing in Beijing. They are now attending a school on the outskirts of Beijing assisting with the English programme and enjoying a real cultural experience. Having travelled to China, I know that they will encounter challenges, but with the support of our staff, I am sure they will enjoy their time. They will be back on the weekend, and I am sure they will have many stories to share. At the end of last term, we welcomed a team from the Education Review Office for their scheduled review. The team spent four days in our school and reported their preliminary findings to our Board of Trustees on the last Thursday of the term. It was pleasing to see that they had recognised the work of our Board, management and staff. They made note of the positive relationships throughout our school, and the work our staff are doing to develop our students. They did offer some suggestions for further improvement, which aligned with discussions staff and Board had had recently. The report on the school will be sent in draft form to the Board in a few weeks, and after that will become our confirmed report and will be available for all to read on our website. On Wednesday 8 August, the school will be hosting an expert in Cyber safety, John Parsons. John visited our school 2 years ago and was a most engaging speaker, with children, with staff and with those from our community who attended an evening meeting. This year, five Intermediate schools are hosting John, with our day being on the Wednesday. As a part of this we will be hosting a community evening, which will be open to any parents from the wider Intermediate School community. An alternate event will be held at Casebrook Intermediate the following night. I strongly recommend John, having heard him speak on a number of occasions. Whilst the evening events are targeted at parents, his work with our children during the day is at an appropriate level. If you can find time to come along and listen to him, either here or at Casebrook, I am sure you will not be disappointed. Teacher-Parent-Child interviews will be held on Monday 6 August and Tuesday 7 August. I would encourage all families to attend these interviews and discuss not only the Term 2 report, but also develop goals for the remainder of this year. Teachers really enjoy the opportunity to speak with you, and to work collaboratively to ensure your child has the best year they can. The next meeting of the PTA will be on Wednesday 8 August at 6:00pm and the next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be on Thursday 9 August. Friends and families are most welcome to attend these meetings. Thank you for your on-going support of our school. Phil Tappenden Principal

School Garden Over Summer and Autumn Room 12 picked raspberries and strawberries from our school garden. There was a great yield of about 7kgs when harvested which meant we could make ice cream and jam. The ice cream was really messy to make but it will be delicious to eat. While they were making the ice cream, Hayden and I were making jam, which was also a bit messy. We mixed the berries with a lot of sugar and boiled it. The sugar dissolved, however, at the start there were little geysers of sugar coming up so you had to be careful. It was so much fun and it tasted delicious. Some of us nearly finished our jar of jam before we got home. We would like to say thank you to Mrs Anderson for showing us how to make it and for putting up with us, we really appreciate her time and help. Lachie
