Wednesday 27 March 2019 Term 1 Panui 2Quote of the Day“Smile, if you want a smile from another face.” The Dalai Lama

From the Principals DeskChristchurch TragedyIt is unbelievable that the horrific events that happened in Christchurch had targeted so many “innocent” people. The deep sense of shock and sadness that we have seen and heard has been astonishing. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go to the Muslim community and to the many others that this affected. It is hoped that our actions in the days, months and years to come makes New Zealand more united, empathetic and understanding. It shouldn’t matter what race or religion we are, we should all feel valued, accepted and safe. At a whole school assembly, we observed a minute’s silence, spoke briefly about what had happened then shared the importance of our ‘SCHOOL VALUES’ - caring, respect and kindness. During class time, teachers also took the opportunity to share further details with their tamariki to help clarify some of the misunderstandings and questions they had.

At the same assembly we acknowledged the 1 year passing of our much loved, gentle natured student Moareen Rameka. This was positive as we could relate the grief and hurt our school experienced during this time to that of the families and others in Christchurch.

Schools were informed that a government service will take place from 10-11a.m on Friday 29 March to pay respects for the 50 people who died. This will be available for live streaming for all New Zealanders. As a school we will be having a full school assembly on this day at 10 a.m. have karakia, a minute’s silence followed by a himene to show our respect and aroha. We

NPS Swimming Sports On Wednesday 20th February, we held our school swimming sports at the Town Pools. Our students should be congratulated for their participation on this day, as much as for their success. Huia & Tui houses were standouts in their house colours, and Weka & Tui certainly had a lot of swimmers gathering points in the races. The weather was great and the efforts of our students were too.

***It was just a little disappointing that some of our students decided to bomb into the pool at the end of our day. We need to remember that we are using a facility that has a “NO BOMBING” rule and we need to respect that rule.

INTERSCHOOL Swimming Sports This was held on Tuesday 6th March at the Huntly Aquatic centre. It was fantastic to have arrived early this year and I’d like to thank our whanau who ensured their tamaiti/tamariki were ready to roll! We enjoyed yet another year of seeing our students challenge themselves at that ‘next level’, and saw a number of our students meet the challenges set by students from other schools. We do have some talented swimmers at our kura! The results were:

Waka Koopapa- Whaingaroa and Turangawaewae Regatta What a season we have had with koopapa!!! We hit the ground running with trainings early in the Term, and as always, we are so grateful for Matua Ikemoke and his whanau for their support with these. During our trainings our Senior girls team was specially invited to the Whaingaroa race day on Thursday 8th March. What an honour kotiro ma! These girls did us proud coming away with FIRST PLACE!!!The Turangawaewae Regatta race days were on Wednesday 13th & Thursday 14th of March. We had a total of 5 teams entered this year, and we hope all our tamariki are proud of their achievements up against so many other schools across the Waikato!

Rugby Visit: WRU (Waikto Rugby Union & Ngaruawahia Rugby Sports Club(NRSC)On Friday 15th March we had 2 rugby visitors pop in to promote their game! It was great to see some of our tamariki already involved in playing Rugby Union. If you are thinking about signing up your child/ren to play Rugby this year, we would like to recommend Ngaruawahia Rugby Sports Club! Rm 8 were taken out for a few drills and a quick game of Ripper! Top try scorers of the day were Sharnty for the Yellow team and Alaska for the Red team!

Room 5’s report on Lake Areare and Pukemokemoke ReserveConservation dogs Kimi is a black conservation dog. Kimi finds Bitterns. That’s her job. She also does tricks. She is fun. She listens well. Kimi finds stuff really quickly. She has a sensitive sense of smell. Emma taught us all about Conservation dogs. Emma is so nice. Kimi is the best dog at finding bitterns. Kimi can shake hands. She can spin around when we tell her to. She is so fun to play with. When we move our hand left she will walk left. Some conservation dogs are trained to find other native birds like Kiwi. Their job is really important. They can find native birds way easier than we can.

Mark the tracker We went on a trip to Lake Areare to see what the Department of Conservation does to look after our native birds there. We were in a group with Mark the tracker. Mark taught us how to track a bird. He gave us a receiver. When the beeping noise got louder that meant that we were closer. If it was quiet, then we were far away. On the receiver there were S’s. These were like the sound. Mark walked in a triangle. He gave it a special name. It’s called triangulation. We had to find a fake Kiwi with a transmitter on it. Mark told us that Kiwis are endangered. This means that there are not many left. The Department of Conservation has to track birds to see how many there are and where they are. This helps to keep them safe.

Pest Control On our trip to Lake Areare went learnt that there are pests. Pests are animals that can kill our native birds. Some pests are cats, ferrets, weasels, stoats and rats. Rose, the Department of Conservation worker, showed us a map of all the places where traps are set. There are lots of traps set to catch pests. There is a wooden box that catches one at a time. There are also other traps. These can kill up to 24 pests before being reset. Some of the baits used to catch the pests smelt like coconut, chocolate and cinnamon. Rose also had lots of stuffed animals for us to look at and feel. We learnt a lot.

Pukemokemoke Reserve During our class trip we visited Pukemokemoke reserve. This is a place where native birds and trees can be safe. We went there to learn about trees, birds and other native stuff. We had our picture taken at the bottom. We had to wash our feet in a special cleaning station to help stop the kauri trees from getting a disease. We saw lots of traps that kill the bad animals. We saw Kauri trees in the Kauri grove and Totara and Kawakawa, which has heart-shaped leaves. At the top there was a lookout. We climbed the lookout and saw right across the Waikato. You can see lots of maunga from up there. We could even see Taupiri and the Hakarimata.
