GAUDEAMUS IGITUR

Let us live then, and be glad While young life’s before us! After youthful pastime had, After Old age hard and sad,

Earth will slumbe o’er us.

Brief is life, and brevity Briefly shall be ended:

Death comes like whirlwind strong Bears us with his blast long;

None shall be defended.

Live this University Men that learning nourish!

Live each member of the same Long live all that bear its name;

Let them ever flourish!

GAUDEAMUS IGITUR

Gaudeamus igitur, juvenes dum sumus (Rep) Post jucundam juventutem, post molestam senectutem,

Nos habebit humus, nos habebit humus.

Vita nostra bresis est, brevi finietur (Rep) Venit mors velociter, rapit nos atrociter,

Nemini parcetur, nemini parcetur.

Vita Academia, Vitat Professores, (Rep) Vitat mebbrum quodlibet, vivant membra wuaelibet,

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENGLISH (LITERATURE)

ODUWOBI OLUYOMI ABAYOMI

Title : Representations of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in Selected

Contemporary Narratives

Promoter : Prof. H Sewlall

Co-promoter : Prof. O Abodunrin

Citation

Oluyomi Abayomi Oduwobi studied the diverse approaches which writers of African descent

employed to reconstruct the trans-Atlantic slave trade, with the focus on eight contemporary

literary narratives. The selected texts were representative of the authors’ different continents

and shades of African ancestry. What was evident in the selection of writers, was the varying

perspectives and literary strategies which they deployed to reconstruct the experiences of

Africans who were transported as slaves to the Americas between the fifteenth and

nineteenth centuries.

Using the theoretical frameworks of postcolonialism, postcolonial feminism and postmodern

historiographic metafiction, the study evaluated the theoretical and practical importance of

reconstructing a historical past in contemporary literary narratives as well as their counter-

hegemonic proclivities. The study also examined how the selected writers deviated from the

normative form of writing slave narratives, to make the trans-Atlantic slave trade and its

engendered discourses on racism as well as the socio-economic realities of Africans in the

diaspora relevant to the twenty-first century reader. An examination of the selected narratives

for the thesis successfully contributed to the knowledge on literary scholarship and exposed

aspects of the trans-Atlantic slave trade that were previously unexplored. It also directed

attention to the contemporary discourses of appraising the interdisciplinary links between

literature and other fields such as history, law, as well as cultural and diasporic studies. This

PhD research, therefore, contributes significantly to the research on African diasporic literary

studies as evidenced in academic papers already being published from it in peer-reviewed

journals.

CONFERMENT OF HONORARY DOCTORATE

SCHOOL OF HUMAN AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

HERBERT MOKADI LENTSOANE

Herbert Mokadi Lentsoane was born on 27 November 1946 in GaMarishane, Sekhukhune

area, Limpopo Province, South Africa. He received his primary education at Marishane

Community School and his secondary education at Bopedi-Bapedi Secondary School and

Orlando High School respectively. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Higher Education Diploma,

a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Master of Arts.

Mr. Lentoane taught at Orlando secondary school as a teacher, at Lebowakgomo as a

teacher and acting vice-principal, and served at Tshehlo secondary school as a principal. He

went on to work at Mokopane College of Education as a Head of Department and Acting

Vice-Rector, and at the then University of the North as a Lecturer until his early retirement in

2001.

Lentsoane has done a lot for the development of the Northern Sotho language, which is one

of the languages offered at this institution. His writing skills already emerged when he

attended Bopedi- Bapedi secondary school, where writing compositions was taught by the

legendary Mr. J. R. Masemola. The publication of some of his best compositions in a school

magazine called Motswalle wa Bana (Wamba), edited by the late C. P. Senyatsi, encouraged

him to write more. Further publications in Tšwelopele, where his first poem, Sekolo se se

phagamego sa Bopedi-Bapedi appeared, encouraged him to write more poems. His late

grandmother, Elsina Makuntane Makgoba, who could not read and write, was a born poet

whose expertise of reciting traditional praise poems, instilled the love of writing in him.

His teacher in the then Forms IV and V, the late Bernard Mahulo Molaba, at Orlando High

School, laid the foundation of his understanding of the theory of literature. Further reading of

Sesotho sa Leboa literature at the Universities of Limpopo and UNISA informed his own

subsequent writing career. Living in Johannesburg, and in Diepkloof, in particular during the

apartheid era, sharpened his observation of the horrors of apartheid especially in terms of

the Group Areas Act which controlled the movement of Blacks from rural to urban areas. The

question of the pass system and migratory labour had a marked influence on the writing of

some of his poems in Mokgako.

He authored twelve and co-authored nineteen books, edited one and translated many others,

including the Northern Sotho Bible.
