Art Education majors at St. Thomas Aquinas College take both art studio courses and art history courses, providing them the techniques and theoretical practices necessary for the discipline. In cooperation with the School of Education, art students complete coursework in Inclusive Art Education in order to pursue New York State Certification required for teaching.

Within the art department, students develop skills in various media, leading to an understanding of the practice of art and artistic expression as it exists in a personal, social, cultural, and multicultural context. Through specific education and art education courses, students learn the nature of human development, as well as the theory and practice of both education in general, and art education in particular.

This studio based hands-on approach prepares students as artists while at the same time they become involved in the “art” of teaching art. Careers If you are passionate about art and also want to share this passion with others, this is a choice to consider. As more research exists to support the value of experiential learning, the role of art in education has expanded. Art provides ways for individuals to express personal motivations and feelings but also to engage any subject in a hands-on way. While an Art Education degree prepares students for teaching Kindergarten to 12th grade, it also applies to careers in community centers, museum education, retirement centers and more.

Art speaks when words fail. Art Therapy provides a vehicle for an inward journey through which thoughts, feelings, and images can be released in a concrete form. For many people, art serves as a less threatening bridge for discussing inner feelings. An art therapist encourages the individual to be expressive in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The joy of creating has a healing function as it builds confidence and self-esteem. In addition, it allows one to experience a sense of freedom beyond all physical and emotional boundaries. Art Therapy is an exciting, innovative, and growing field – it has been called one of 10 most promising new fields. Art therapists can be found in hospitals, schools, mental health programs, adult care facilities, prisons, private practice, etc. Art therapists are often the first volunteers called upon when disasters strike, and were instrumental in the emotional recovery process after September 11.

The undergraduate degree in Art Therapy at STAC provides a well-rounded curriculum. Students take 12 required credits in psychology, 21 credits in fine art and 18 credits in art therapy. All of these courses are hands-on and provide a foundation for the basic skills and theories required to become an art therapist. The final capstone courses provide 120 hours of supervised field experience with a specific population, which can lead to jobs after graduation. In addition, students refine their art portfolio for application to graduate schools.

Every student who completes the art therapy major will:

• Have knowledge of the theory and practice of art therapy.

• Understand the developmental stages of art.

• Learn how art therapy is applied to various populations.

• Competently match the implementation of expressive materials to meet individual’s specific needs.

• Have insight to the potential meaning conveyed through art.

Careers Students successfully completing this program can look forward to being thoroughly prepared for graduate school in art therapy. The STAC Art Therapy program is designed to meet the American Art Therapy Associations required curriculum for acceptance to graduate school. In addition, our program will prepare one to apply for graduate study in social work, psychology, and other helping professions.

Alumni Spotlight Jennifer Passanisi '14, Art Therapist, Jawonio Promise Program “My advisor at STAC, Carol Lagstein, really helped me along the way in my career. Why study literature; isn’t it all just made up? What does reading and writing about books really prepare me for, anyway? What can I do with an English major?

Too often, the study of English is dismissed with questions like these, labeled an impractical discipline out of touch with contemporary concerns. Here at St. Thomas Aquinas College, students learn to appreciate literary study as a vibrant and dynamic pursuit essential to communicating in a modern world. English majors develop an understanding of, and an appreciation for, the ways in which language and literature shape human cultural and social experiences. Course offerings cover a wide array of English and American literature (from the monsters and heroes of Old English epic to the experimental creations of contemporary American short fiction); a full range of forms and genres (including, prose, poetry, drama, film, and emerging media); and a variety of literary critical methodologies. Moreover, while the English faculty is committed to acquainting majors with the works of traditionally canonical authors and a robust sense of literary historical periodicity, they are equally devoted to familiarizing students with the works of historically under-represented groups. Grappling with this panoply of texts and approaches, our majors hone their abilities to read closely, write persuasively, and think critically. Equipped with such analytical skills and fortified by such habits of mind, what can’t an English major do?

English (Grades 7-12 Certification) Working in conjunction with the School of Education, our students take courses that prepare them to become middle and high school English teachers, at all levels.

Careers English majors are successful in graduate schools of law, business, medicine, theology, psychology, and art, as well as English. Upon graduation, English majors work in many fields: publishing, medicine, banking, management, journalism, advertising, fundraising, editing, and teaching.

Forensic Science combines the study of biology and chemistry to solve crimes from the past and the present. Forensic Science technologies are constantly advancing. Modern techniques such as forensic DNA analysis have been used in identifying criminal suspects, exonerating the wrongly accused, identifying victims killed in catastrophes such as on September 11, looking for descendants of Thomas Jefferson, even shedding light on the state of Lincoln's health during his presidency. Forensic chemistry is used to identify and characterize evidence such as fibers, paint chips, illegal drugs, and glass fragments. Chemical analysis has been used to identify the explosives used in the Oklahoma City bombing and in the murder investigation of Sunny von Bulow. Students who successfully complete the Forensic Science program will be able to:

• Perform a crime scene analysis.

• Integrate the scientific theory and practical laboratory training received both on and off campus (during their summer internship).

• Communicate information in a professional manner, using written and oral methods, which is necessary for expert witness testimony.

• Critically analyze and interpret forensic science related research and case study findings.

• Thoughtfully discuss current criminal justice, societal, governmental, ethical, scientific, and business issues concerning forensic science.

This program is designed according to the guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Forensic Science. Careers Students successfully completing this program will find increased employment opportunities in a variety of federal, state, and local government facilities as well as private laboratory facilities.

It is commonly felt that the study of the past is important, even indispensable, to an understanding of the present. People have most frequently thought so in times — like the present — where they faced rapid change; when the familiar world was being transformed in ways they could feel and see without being able to understand the underlying causes. As history stands on the boundaries between the social sciences and the humanities, it offers a sound foundation for many interdisciplinary fields, and a good background for the study of art, literature, economics, philosophy, politics, sociology, anthropology, and social psychology. The History program at STAC comprises both upper-level research seminars and introductory survey courses, to accommodate history majors, non-majors, and the student who is curious about the past.

Students of history prepare for careers in law, public administration, public service, and teaching. They will learn how to analyze problems, how to study evidence and construct an argument, to read accurately and critically, and write clearly and forcefully.

Students can also receive teacher certification for grades 7-12 in our Adolescence Education program.

Careers History majors may find careers in government, politics, law, nonprofit organizations, curatorial and archival management, journalism, education, and business.

Mathematics is so much more than just numbers. The various skills that are perfected in a math class transform into an analytical ability that will be incorporated into daily life. However, beyond these practical skills, St. Thomas Aquinas College offers students interested in math a number of options in preparation for a number of different careers:

Applied Mathematics Students who major in Applied Mathematics do exactly that — apply their knowledge in math, combined with statistics and physics, to solve problems of any nature. The focus of the major lies in modern applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, and computational mathematics.

Students take a variety of courses in the Applied Mathematics major such as calculus, discrete mathematics, operations research, and numerical analysis. Students learn how to take the abstract concepts learned in math classes and use them to solve various problems from actual real-life occurrences. They are prepared to use mathematical formulas and apply them to the business arena when it comes to predicting the behavior of financial markets or explaining the logistics behind the risk factors of insuring a company. Students learn to how to use their mathematical expertise to make informed and efficient decisions, a valuable asset to any corporation.

Actuarial Science Students who like to use mathematics in a real world setting and are seeking a career that is both interesting and challenging may choose the field of Actuarial Science. Using knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and business, actuaries not only assess the risk of an event occurring but also are instrumental in developing policies that will help to reduce expenditures associated with these events.

Students take a variety of courses in this major such as calculus, mathematics of finance, life contingencies, and numerical analysis as well as courses in accounting, economics and business. This knowledge helps our students to take the abstract concepts learned in math classes and use them to solve various real world problems.

Pure Mathematics The philosopher Bertrand Russell famously said that mathematics, “possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty…capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.” Pure Mathematics provides a student the opportunity to develop objective reasoning, precise thinking, and an appreciation of the contribution of mathematics to society. The logical solution of problems in this discipline fosters a set of critical abilities needed by all educated adults.

Students learn about the modern trends in mathematics after establishing a strong fundamental understanding of how mathematics has evolved. This foundation is cultivated in classes such as calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. Students learn how to make decisions using important traditional concepts that they have learned in the classroom.

Mathematics (Grades 7-12 Certification) Working in conjunction with the School of Education, our students take courses that prepare them to become middle and high school math teachers, at all levels. Careers Mathematics majors are able to obtain employment in the actuarial field, business and management, education, engineering, government agencies, law enforcement, and pharmaceutical companies.

The academic study of religion involves the historical investigation of how human groups use myths, symbols, rituals, and other practices in the creation, maintenance, and contestation of group identity and social order. The academic study of philosophy both introduces students to the history of philosophy and trains students to work out their own sophisticated and logical answers to questions about knowledge and human understanding.

Students who choose to major in Philosophy and Religious Studies have a number of optional specializations:

Christian Traditions The specialization in Christian Traditions offers a variety of courses which examine the origins and history of Christianity, from the first century to the present.

Ethics The specialization in Ethics offers a curriculum with two aims: a study through philosophy of ethical questions and concerns and a contemplation of how religious practitioners and authoritative texts have contributed to such ethical debates.

Philosophy The Philosophy faculty seeks to provide courses that offer a balance between the historical development of philosophy and an analysis of philosophical problems. Students expand their understanding by learning more about the history of Western thought. By focusing on the problems raised by human interaction in terms of history, culture, and the world, students learn to think and write logically and critically.

Pre-Law Both the American Bar Association and the Law School Admissions Council agree that the skills of logic and critical thinking – skills that are at the heart of a Philosophy major – will serve students well as they apply to and attend law school. This specialization offers students who may be interested in attending law school a significant advantage – and a way to connect that interest to a career in law.

Religious Studies The program in Religious Studies offers a variety of courses which examine the origins of religion and its place as a cultural phenomenon as well as its particular expressions in the great world religions of the West and East. The courses concentrate on biblical literature, the characteristics of different world religions, and the historical development of Western religious thought, particular themes in theology and ethics, and various issues of contemporary significance.

Social Justice All humans are faced with social systems and behavioral practices that distribute advantages and responsibilities in disproportionate ways, or that serve the interests of some at the expense of others. The Social Justice specialization will provide students with the intellectual tools necessary to evaluate critically the nature of such social systems and practices. Careers Each program provides the opportunity for students to prepare for graduate studies or a variety of careers, from law to work in the non-profit sector, and offers a range of courses to suit individual needs.

Students of psychology are often referred to as "scientist-practitioners." In that tradition, students are trained in human development, group processes, oral communications skills, written expressive skills, and the conduct of social science research. Psychology majors develop knowledge of the statistical procedures used to analyze data and learn how to design and evaluate research in psychology. Students will read and critically appraise journal articles within the literature of professional psychology. Finally, students will understand the ethical issues involved in the practice of psychology and in the conduct of research in psychology.

The Psychology faculty holds as its highest goal the aim to train students to think critically and analytically. Students will gain an understanding of psychological phenomena as they affect the individual as well as the larger social world. Studying foreign languages provides a strong advantage in the job market in the global economy. Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, and French) are some of the most important languages for international business and more and more employers are seeking people with proficiency in these languages.

Students who major in Romance Languages at St. Thomas Aquinas College prepare themselves for a new global world without borders. In her essay “Becoming a Citizen of the World,” Vivien Stewart, says, “The new skill set that students will need goes well beyond the United States' current focus on the basics and on math, science, and technology. These skills are necessary, of course, but to be successful global citizens, workers, and leaders, students will need to be knowledgeable about the world, be able to communicate in languages other than English, and be informed and active citizens.”

Students majoring in Romance Languages will take courses in literature, language, and the cultures of Spain, Italy and France. They will learn valuable concepts that will lead to the development of language proficiency, and an insightful discovery of the cultures of the many areas of the world where these languages are spoken.

Romance Language majors also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the cultures they learn about through many study abroad opportunities (semester, year, summer and week-long opportunities). STAC students recently toured Italy and Spain.

As part of the Romance Languages major, students can join our Italian Club, coordinated by Dr. Maria Roglieri, Professor of Italian. In recent years, the club has hosted a variety of Movie Nights, Gelato Nights, and Bocce Nights – and Dr. Roglieri has taken students on trips to Ellis Island, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the acclaimed NYC restaurant, Eataly.

Careers Proficiency in two foreign languages helps students find employment in the public and private sectors. Romance Languages majors find careers in international business, environmental firms, public health, advertising and marketing, finance, public relations, technology, healthcare, media, education, and travel.

Students interested in a broad range of fields such as history, sociology, political science, psychology, and geography should explore a major in Social Sciences. In addition to responding to a breadth of interests, the Social Sciences major seeks to further the ideas of citizenship, multicultural understanding, and global perspectives to help prepare students for the global society of the future.

Social Sciences majors will develop their ability to critically analyze material and to synthesize it into a broad interdisciplinary world view.

The members of the Social Sciences faculty offer students a synthesis of tradition and progress, continuity and change, in order to meet the problems and issues of contemporary society. A major objective of the curriculum is the attainment of a more global perspective by introducing students to a variety of people and nations, their cultural heritage past and present, and their societal relations in America and the world.

Social Studies (Grades 7-12 Certification) Students can also receive teacher certification for grades 7-12 in our Adolescence Education program.

Careers Social Sciences majors can find careers in the following areas: anthropology, sociology, environmental planning, geography, history, education, political science, and public management.

SPANISHIt seems pretty clear that, at this point in human history, the world is becoming a smaller and more interconnected place, and those who study at least one other language will have a significant advantage over those who do not. Students who choose Spanish as a major develop a deeper understanding of the world around them – and, in addition, acquire Spanish language skills that will be useful in communicating in a nation in which Spanish is growing rapidly. Spanish majors are well equipped for modern job markets. According to a 2006 report of the Committee for Economic Development:

To compete successfully in the global marketplace, both U.S.-based multinational corporations as well as small businesses increasingly need employees with knowledge of foreign languages and cultures to market products to customers around the globe and to work effectively with foreign employees and partners in other countries.

STAC Spanish majors:

• Read a mix of classic and contemporary works in Spanish.

• Prepare for graduate studies in Spanish and most professional schools, including law, business, education, and medicine.

• Prepare for work in professions such as law, business, management, and publishing.

• Build a solid foundation for a career as a teacher of Spanish.

Study Abroad There is no better way to learn the language and appreciate Spanish culture than visiting Spain! Students at St. Thomas Aquinas College can take courses at prestigious universities across Spain. This is an easy and exciting opportunity to learn Spanish.

Study abroad can be a life-changing experience. Immersing oneself in a different culture is the best way to learn a language, as well as the culture that speaks it. Studying in the great cities of Spain – or in any Spanish-speaking country – will expose students to new ways of thinking about the world.

Spanish Culture Part of the mission of the Spanish program at St. Thomas Aquinas College is to make sure that students see the many connections between language and culture. There are numerous opportunities to appreciate the cultural contributions of Spanish-speaking countries.

Cine Español The Spanish faculty hosts a series of screenings throughout the year featuring Spanish language films by international directors. An open discussion is held after the screening, with a Q&A session about the film conducted by the Spanish faculty. Check our campus events calendar for a listing of upcoming presentations.

Fiesta Española The Spanish faculty also hosts a series of concerts highlighting the outstanding musical traditions of Spain and other Spanish- speaking countries. In addition, the concerts feature our own students and faculty, many of whom are talented singers and musicians, as well as invited professional musicians.

Careers Teach! Spanish Language programs are facing a serious teacher shortage all over the NY Metro area. In fact, over the past five years 100% of all Spanish/Secondary Education majors at STAC were able to get teaching jobs within months after graduation. And here is the best news: there are numerous grants and loan forgiveness programs aimed at students who major in Spanish!

Study Abroad Opportunity

The College offers travel-embedded courses during break periods for students to tour and study the cultures of different countries while earning 3 credits. Recent trips include Italy (pictured left), Spain and Costa Rica.

Therapeutic Recreation — also referred to as recreation therapy — is a field with highly skilled and professionally trained individuals who often serve as members of a healthcare team in concert with other professionals. STAC’s program offers students the opportunity to learn how to work with individuals of all ages and disabilities. Recreational therapists help patients recover basic motor function and reasoning abilities, build confidence, and socialize more effectively. Treatments incorporate arts and crafts, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, and music. Newsweek has listed the field of Therapeutic Recreation as one of the top 15 growing professions across the United States.

Students majoring in Therapeutic Recreation learn to work with people with physical disabilities, autism, emotional disturbances, mental disorders, chemical dependencies, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, among others. Upper level classes require students to do field work and clinical research in the surrounding communities, which allows students to put knowledge into practice. Our graduates are well prepared; more than 90% of all TR students over the past 20 years have found full-time employment upon graduation. Today our alumni are working at prestigious facilities such as: Bergen Regional Medical Center, Kessler Institute, Burke Rehabilitation Center, Helen Hayes Hospital, and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. The major balances theory with class experientials and finally casework, to prepare students for careers in the field.

The program is certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the national certification examination and are eligible for employment as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Employment opportunities in the community and residential settings include: children’s hospitals, rehabilitation centers, developmental learning centers, nursing homes, senior centers, and camps serving people with disabilities.

Program Objectives:

• Learn how to document, assess and evaluate clients and patients.

• Learn and implement medical terminology.

• Develop knowledge to understand the etiology of diseases.

• Examine current social issues, needs and trends and their implications for therapeutic recreation.

Careers Full time positions are available across the United States in hospitals, non-profit agencies, school districts, nursing homes, prisons, public recreation centers, rehabilitation hospitals, summer camps, and community daycare centers.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION

There has never been a time in history when there were more opportunities for those interested in pursuing a career in visual art. With artists offering creative input into video production, web design, museum outreach, community centers, education, therapy, fashion, advertisement, environmental design, not to mention the opportunity to work as a producing artist, there is a renewed interest in the arts.

St. Thomas Aquinas College has designed the Visual Art major so all students take a core of foundation courses and then choose areas of concentration depending on personal interests or career choices. An internship in an approved arts organization is also available. Through courses in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Digital Media, Art History and Printmaking, students find creative solutions to visual and conceptual problems while gaining familiarity with contemporary issues in the arts. All involvement with media and methods is directed toward understanding the personal, social, cultural and multicultural dimensions within art. Careers Students interested in a creative and exciting career making use of artistic skills and inclinations should explore STAC’s program. Individuals with degrees in art go on to positions in community centers, museums and art galleries, education, art therapy, the fashion industry including store and window display, film and TV including animation, and the advertisement industry among others. Students also have the option to choose a career as a producing artist by going on to graduate school in the Visual Arts.

Students who major in Visual Communications can choose to concentrate in Graphic Design or Media Art.

Visual Communications is an ever expanding and wildly exciting field of study for creative individuals intent on using their artistic skills and analyzing mind in ways that become part of the collective visual landscape. Design today encompasses far more opportunities than ever before with designers moving beyond design studios and advertising agencies into companies in need of web design, video production, animation and more.

Visual Communications at STAC Changes in technology are occurring at dizzying speed. While it is essential that students learn necessary computer programs, it is equally important to inform those technological tools with solid design principles. At St. Thomas Aquinas College we offer a studio-based curriculum that integrates solid design skills with computer proficiency, while at the same time reinforcing the social role of design.

A final capstone class in portfolio development ensures that students leave our program with evidence of their design abilities, providing the most effective way to enter the job market. Students are also required to take an internship to gain real work experience.

While both majors share the same core curriculum, Graphic Design students will focus on traditional print and web design while Media Art students will focus on multimedia, animation and time-based design. AIGA Membership The St. Thomas Aquinas College Graphic Design program has been recognized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the professional organization for Graphic Designers. Because our program is recognized by AIGA, our students can become members and thereby gain access to the AIGA job and internship databases. They can show their portfolios on the AIGA website, attend lectures and studio visits, use the AIGA design library (in NYC), and receive invitations to many job networking events. Membership in AIGA is an important step toward professionalizing students as they move from our program into the "real world." In fact, there is also an annual portfolio review where students can get feedback from different AIGA members as a way to prepare for real-world job inter-views. Careers Careers in Visual Communications are continually expanding and changing. Our faculty is dedicated to maintaining a professional relationship to the field, while engaging in student-centered studio practices that are current and relevant.

If you have imagined yourself designing publications, corporate branding pieces, posters or any other print materials, creating web and interactive designs, or animation, this is the career for you.
