As part of our service-learning based curriculum, you will get to apply your course skills and knowledge to benefit a community. Through this experience, you will discover a deeper meaning for your course, which will make your learning journey even more engaging.

MANAGE PROPERTIES FOR GOOD

For example, our Real Estate Business students studied property management and worked on a service-learning

project with the HDB Town Council. They surveyed the housing estate, and carried out painting and repair works,

and cleared obstruction to enhance the environment for the benefits of the community. Service-learning

lets their classroom theories come to life! This service learning journey also allows students to apply their

domain knowledge and skills to serve the community in public housing.

BUILD SCHOOL FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED

Service-learning is not confined to the local community. In a little village in Lombok,

Indonesia, our DE students built a kindergarten from scratch for the village children. Apart

from developing an acute eye for design and a better appreciation of building principles,

our students also gained greater social awareness of the region beyond.

Through real-world projects, you will see the concepts you learn in the classroom come to life. At DE, we equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to design a better community for all. Plus, you’ll graduate with a stellar portfolio to boot.

BUILDING YOUR PORTFOLIO

CLEAN WATER FOR KENYANS

Mok Zijie’s Barrel may look like a simple plastic container, but this product can potentially improve the lives of Kenyans living in the rural villages who spend one-third of their day travelling to draw water for their homes. Designed to transport water easily, the Barrel also contains a filtration system that can distil water within. The Barrel can hold 90 liters of water.

The concept proposal for the Arts Hub is the continuous unbroken moment of Tai Chi. This is expressed by a design element which wraps and folds within the building form. This is also a metaphor for continual learning.

WHAT THE COURSE IS ABOUT The world of design is changing – it’s not just about making things look pleasing to the eye. It’s also about being innovative, intuitive and functional. In fact, design has become so fundamental in many businesses that many non-design companies are hiring design-trained professionals!

That is why in the Diploma in Design (DES), we will groom you to think like a designer, and approach problems creatively and holistically.

Through DES, you will gain new economy skills such as design thinking and user experience/interface (UX/UI) design which are well sought after by both design and non-design companies. To help you appreciate holistic design, the curriculum cuts across multiple disciplines from arts to business to engineering, and you will be exposed to broad areas such as object making, spatial design, visual communication, and emerging trends and technologies.

You will get to build up your own portfolio with a range of design projects that challenges the status quo and solve real-world problems. Our service-learning modules will also give you opportunities to work on meaningful projects that benefit the community. Over the three years, our signature programmes are designed to give you a unique learning journey:

Year 1: Design Playbook Fill up your playbook with strong design fundamentals in your first year. You will be taught model making techniques and how to use computer-aided design software. You will also get to explore design processes at every stage, from design research, idea conceptualisation to bringing it to market.

Year 2: Design ImmersionWith a broad perspective of the design industry you have gained in your first year, you can now immerse in real-world environments and deepen your skillset, depending on your interest. There are two specialisations for you to choose from – Architecture or Product Innovation.

- Architecture SpecialisationDevelop an appreciation for different aspects of the architectural design considerations. You will get to learn about spatial and experiential planning, architectural materials and technology, as well as sustainable design. You will also gain an understanding of the code of practice for architects.

- Product Innovation SpecialisationProduct innovation goes beyond physical products; it also includes digital solutions and service designs. Here, you will deepen your knowledge in design and development of a product by understanding users’ needs, user experience and user interface design. Learn how to commercialise products by leveraging smart technologies such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented and Virtual Realities to design physical or digital products.

Year 3: Design Beyond Round off your third year by working with organisations to co-create design solutions to solve real-world problems. You will also put your skills in action through internships in Singapore or overseas.

CAREER The skills you learn in DES are mapped to the skills framework for the local design industry, which means that there is demand for your skillsets in the industry. It is projected that there will be 80% more design-related jobs in non-design companies. DES graduates can thus look forward to good employment prospects in both design and non-design sectors, such as architectural and interior design firms, consumer or industrial products, furniture, packaging, branding, communication and service/experience design.

If you have a flair for business, you can even launch your own product range, start your own design consultancy or design-and-development firm.

WHAT THE COURSE IS ABOUT If you’re excited at the prospect of working at reputable hotels and learning the intricacies of managing modern facilities upon graduation, you’re well suited for the Diploma in Hotel & Leisure Facilities Management (HLFM).

The course will provide you with a strong foundation in managing and operating hotels and leisure facilities. It covers a broad range of areas, from front-of-the-house to back-of-the-house operations such as front office management, food and beverage, housekeeping, workplace safety & health, facilities management, business continuity and green building systems.

A practice-oriented diploma, HLFM provides experiential learning from the start. In your first year, you will visit local hotels and attend off-campus workshops where you can put into practice what you have learnt in class and get a better understanding of the hospitality and facilities management industry.

In your second year, you will learn about managing shopping malls and integrated resorts, marketing and consumer behaviour, green building management, essential building elements and security management. You will also attend learning labs with sharing sessions conducted by the management.

In your final year, you can choose to take up a six-month internship or a three-month internship with a final-year project. You will put into practice what you have learnt during your internship and gain valuable work experience with our industry partners such as AsiaMalls Management Pte Ltd, CapitaLand Limited, Changi Airport Group, City Developments Limited, Fairmont Singapore, Frasers Property, Mapletree, Marina Bay Sands, Resorts World at Sentosa, Swissotel, Surbana Jurong and many more.

As an HLFM graduate, you will also be awarded bizSAFE and Fire Safety Manager Certificates. The latter allows you to be registered as a Qualified Fire Safety Manager with the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

With the training and development provided, you will gain a head start in the hospitality and facilities management industry.

CAREER As an HLFM graduate, you have the best of both worlds. With your training in both front-of-the-house and back-of-the house operations, you’re more likely to gain employment in the facilities management and hospitality industry. You can work as a business development executive, facility officer/executive, technical executive, assistant engineer, attractions operations executive, catering and service executive, events operation executive, front office executive, guest relations executive, public relations executive, sales and marketing executive, reservations executive, and numerous other careers.

You will also be eligible to apply for the SkillsFuture Work-Study Programme (WSProg) in the hospitality and facilities management sector. The WSProg allows you to complete a specialist diploma to deepen your knowledge and enhance your career progression while you are working at a participating organisation.

FURTHER STUDIES With a well-recognised diploma under your belt, you can continue your education in both local universities and many overseas universities with credit exemptions.

HLFM graduates who apply to study in related degree courses will be given additional credit exemptions. These related degree courses include:

WHAT THE COURSE IS ABOUT Fancy yourself a quick thinker with your pulse on the property beat? Want to further hone your intuition for trends in the fast-paced industry of land planning and estate redevelopment? Look no further – the Diploma in Real Estate Business (REB) is well-equipped to train you in both the business and management aspects of the industry.

The course will give you the necessary skillsets to help property owners, investors and tenants to maximise the use of their properties to achieve the highest financial returns. You will also play a role in the valuation, strategic marketing and management of residential, commercial and industrial properties, as well as private and public residential properties.

In your first year, you will learn the fundamentals of real estate business and building management.

In your second year, you will be exposed to the management, marketing, urban planning and sustainability, building services and maintenance, as well as project management, contract administration and legal aspects of real estate. You will also learn how to conduct property valuation and manage client relationships.

Candidates who have completed the Higher NITEC in Facility Management and issued with the Fire Safety Manager Certificate will be exempted from the Fire Safety Management module in this diploma.

^ Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) modules account for up to 13 credit units of the diploma curriculum.
