Charles P. Ruch Award For Excellence in Teaching The Charles P. Ruch Award for Excellence in Teaching was established by the School of Education in honor of Dr. Ruch, who served as Dean of the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1977 to 1985, and as Provost of the University from 1986 to 1992. While Dr. Ruch valued all three traditional university faculty roles of teaching, scholarship, and service, he emphasized excellence in teaching as the primary role of the faculty of the School of Education. Criteria Eligibility for the award is limited to a full-time faculty member of the School of Education, who in the opinion of students and colleagues, demonstrates the following qualities: 1. Stimulates learning and encourages intellectual growth 2. Includes current knowledge and research findings 3. Models effective teaching methods 4. Is supportive and accessible to students 5. Exerts a positive influence on students Nominations Nominations should be submitted on the attached form to Dr. Diane Simon, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, School of Education, no later than March 30. The nomination should include the full name of the nominee and a description of how the candidate meets the above criteria. Descriptions which include specific examples and thoughtful explanations are most helpful to the committee. Please encourage other students to support your nominee by submitting additional nominating letters. It is acceptable for two students to submit a recommendation letter. Dr. Simon will submit all nominations to a Selection Committee consisting of members from each of the following: 1. President or a representative of a School of Education student organization (i.e., SVEA, CESNA, etc.) 2. One master’s degree candidate, one doctoral candidate, and one student representative from the School of Education extended teacher preparation program, all appointed by the Dean. 3. President of the Faculty Organization or his or her designee. 4. The previous recipient of the award, or Dean’s designee, will chair the Committee. DEADLINE: March 30, 2017

SelectionThe Committee Chair will convene the Selection Committee. The Committee will be charged with the review of nominees for the Ruch Award for Excellence in Teaching. The names of the nominees and all information and discussion about them will be held in strict confidence during and after the nomination process. The Committee will vote by secret ballot and submit the name of the recipient to the Dean of the School of Education.

Presentation of the AwardThe recipient of the Charles P. Ruch Award will be recognized at the School of Education Graduation Ceremony to be held on Saturday, May 3, 2017.
