YUYA YOSHIDA, MFA 2015 Designer, Volume San Francisco
“There was no reason not to come to the United States. I grew up with American toys — action figures, comics, movies, theme parks, skateboarding. Everything I loved in my childhood came from American culture, and it’s still my biggest inspiration.
“I learned the excitement of designing brand experiences that can create value in the world. After working at a small design office, doing freelance design projects and videography and editing for skateboard companies in Tokyo, I decided to continue my education in Graphic Design at Academy of Art University.”

ROBERT GUY, BFA 2014 Designer, Hatch San Francisco
“The Academy has given me the opportunity to work with real clients, solving real problems. During our Packaging 3 class, our instructor, Tom McNulty, helped us create new brands for Trinchero Family Vineyards. Two of my designs were chosen to take to market and naturally I was thrilled. This experience gave me the confidence and knowledge of how a designer works with a brief and turns it into a new product.
“While working at Hatch here in San Francisco, I was able to apply what I had learned to the projects to which I was assigned. For professional relevance, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Our network of professional partners provides opportunities to our students in the form of scholarships, grants, classroom support, and professional experience.
Real-World Partnerships
ADOBE In a collaborative effort between Adobe Systems and Academy of Art University, students Julia Lemke and Michael Taylor were asked to develop the concept and visuals for the Adobe Creative Cloud educational campaign with the guidance of Tolleson Design Creative Director (and Academy alum) Jamie Calderon.
Real-world partnerships with key industry players like Adobe are a signature feature of the teaching process at the Academy. The result is a sparklingly imaginative and visually captivating multimedia campaign that represents the myriad dimensions of “Make It With Creative Cloud.”
TRINCHERO WINERYThe marketing team of this well-known Sonoma winery took notice of the spirits’ packaging at the Academy’s Spring Show and decided to put their trust in the students of Tom McNulty’s Packaging 3 class. The class assignment was to develop a new brand for millennial females.
The students created the brand identities and wine labels through exhaustive creative exploration and close client collaboration throughout the semester. The final presentation exceeded client expectations — so much so that several of the new designs made it into the marketplace. This ongoing partnership continues to make it possible for students to obtain real-world experience.
SF FIRE DEPARTMENTTo celebrate the 150th anniversary of the San Francisco Fire Department, the School of Graphic Design was asked to develop a commemorative logo and comprehensive communications platform for this massive civic undertaking.
MFA alum Astra Sodarsono created the mark itself — then two teams of undergraduate classes under the direction of Tom McNulty applied it to a wide array of communication vehicles, marketing campaigns, merchandise, and online materials. A comprehensive set of branding guidelines, media kits, digital assets, and mechanical art was provided to the fire department for ongoing use throughout the year.

“ Type is a powerful thing. Even if you don’t have a budget for illustration or photography, you can craft an emotional message just using type. — Supriya Kalidas, MFA 2009
Deputy Art Director, Sunset magazine

With over 25,000 alumni across the world, we strive to keep our artist communities engaged and supported in their professional lives.
Our Alumni
SUPRIYA KALIDASDeputy Art Director, Sunset magazine
Supriya Kalidas wanted to take her graphic design to the next level.
“I would see gorgeous design works coming out and my work didn’t look anything like it,” she recalls. Upon entering the MFA Graphic Design program at Academy of Art University, her work began to progress and “my sensibilities grew leaps and bounds,” she said. She fell in love with typography and the ability to tell stories through different approaches.
“Type is a powerful thing. Even if you don’t have a budget for illustration or photography, you can craft an emotional message just using type,” she said.
Kalidas is currently an Art Director at the venerable Sunset magazine, which, coincidently, was where Academy of Art University founder Richard S. Stephens worked as a Creative Director nearly a century ago.
Kalidas believes that graphic design is not only a fulfilling profession, but also a very important one.
Design spread in Sunset magazine.

Alumni Stories
San Francisco Design Week Branding Campaign.
ED O’BRIEN, BFA 2003Creative Director, Character San Francisco
In a collaboration between the San Francisco chapter of AIGA (the professional association for design) and local design firm Character — School of Graphic Design alum Ed O’Brien led the team that conceived and produced a distinctive visual theme for the SF Design Week branding campaign.
To bring the theme of “Look Closer” to life, elaborate mirror-clad, wooden letterforms were fabricated and photographed in various Bay Area locations, The letterforms were then used as the centerpiece of the SFDW opening reception — an event drawing people from around the world.
“From inspiration to innovation to education to responsibility, what design in 2015 means is an open-ended question. It was important to create imagery that sparked dialogue around that, rather than try to sum it all up,” said O’Brien.

ALANA IPPOLITO, MFA 2011 Creator, ZigZag City Guides for Kids
For her graduate thesis project, Alana combined two passions — travel and kids — and created ZigZag City Guides. During her research, she had trouble finding guides created specifically for children. She felt there was an opportunity to enhance their involvement in all aspects of travel.
Ippolito collaborated with fellow Academy alum Jayde Fish to bring the characters “Zig” and “Zag” to life through her illustrations. A successful Kickstarter campaign ensued, providing Ippolito with enough capital to fund the first print run. Before long, the guides appeared at Anthropologie and the SF MOMA and Guggenheim museum stores.
“The MFA program gave me the skills I needed to create a project that could exist in the real world.” says Ippolito. Current ZigZag destinations include San Francisco, New York City, Rome, Paris, and London. Stay tuned for future cities to come.

ENGAGE YOUR PEERS You may work and study independently, but that does not mean you cannot call on the support of your online classmates. Each course offers a class discussion area where students and instructors can freely exchange thoughts, post work, and provide or receive creative feedback. The discussion area’s sole purpose is to give you and your peers the opportunity to support one another’s development as artists.

BONNIE PANGMFA, School of Illustration
“Academy of Art University’s Online Education provides me the privilege to receive quality education while staying with my family in Hong Kong. The program’s flexibility gives me great freedom to manage my time, work on side projects, and even come to study abroad for the summer semester! I have especially benefited from the online career talks which helped me land my current position at an animation studio.”
