Italian (IT) ModulesIT1001 Introduction to Italian Language

Anti-requisite: Higher Italian or its equivalent.

Description: This module is the normal entry point which leads eventually to Honours Italian for beginnersin Italian. It is designed for students with no prior experience of Italian and does not assume any knowledge of thelanguage. The course is intensive and proceeds quickly. It concentrates on grammar and usage through reading,writing, listening and speaking. Computerised materials are also used to supplement classes and full instruction intheir use is provided. There are also lectures introducing aspects of Italian history and culture.

ML2003 European Art Song in the Nineteenth Century

Description: The module covers the development of the art song in Germany and France from 1800 to 1900.It explores a selection of outstanding songs from major German and French composers, including Schubert,Schumann, Wolf, Faure and Debussy. While music is the main focus, the module also looks closely at the poetryassociated with the history of song, in particular song texts by e.g. Goethe, Heine and Verlaine. Songs will berelated to their social, musical and literary contexts, and students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas onthe relationship between music and poetry. Students should already have some understanding of musical notation; aknowledge of French and German may be advantageous but is not a requirement, since translations of song texts willbe provided.

Description: This module offers an introduction to modern Latin American history. Starting with the Warsof Independence (1804-1825), it traces the political history of Spanish America, Brazil and Haiti up to the present.Adopting a thematic approach, within a continental-based narrative, this module focuses on the early national period,the neocolonial period, the age of extremes and the age of neoliberalism. Recent trends towards democratisationwithin a context of globalisation will also be addressed. Whilst the module will stress the common themes betweencountries as far apart as Mexico and Argentina, it will nonetheless highlight specific national contexts. Key eventssuch as the Mexican-American war, the Mexican Revolution, the Chaco War, the Cuban Revolution and Pinochet'scoup of 1973 will all be studied.

Description: In language the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, writing are developed throughprepared work, class activities and language practicals. Language material will reflect cultural aspects of the Spanishspeaking world. The module maintains progress from SP1002; there is a learning gradient. In texts, major criticalapproaches are studied with reference to the four genres of poetry, prose, drama and film and applied to the criticalanalysis of specific examples of each from the sixteenth century to the twentieth, drawn from Spain and SpanishAmerica.

SP2002 Spanish Language and Critical Approaches to Texts (2)

Description: The language part of the module consists of two hours each week and one language practicalbased on CAL packages, developing the skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Language material willreflect cultural aspects of the Spanish speaking world. The module maintains progress from SP2001 and SP2005;there is a learning gradient. The Critical Approaches part of the module consists of two class hours and one readinggroup,with some autotutorial hours based on prepared worksheets and CAL. Literary texts are studied in the contextof regions and epochs including Middle Ages and Renaissance in Spain and modern Spanish America.

Description: The module is designed for students for whom a language-only course is appropriate and forHonours students in other subjects who wish to develop facility in Spanish in order to advance their Honoursstudies. The student will develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. A booklet, Revise & Consolidate,is provided for the module. It consists of twelve units, each combining a topic of grammar, a communicativeactivity in class and varied work, including comprehension and precis.

Description: This module is appropriate for students who wish to study language only and do not intend tostudy Spanish at Honours level. An exception to this rule is the case of students intending to study either Spanishand two other subjects or Spanish and Social Anthropology, for whom there will be special teaching arrangements.It is also appropriate for Honours students in other subjects who wish to develop further language skills for theirHonours programme. The students will develop further the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills thatfeatured in the first semester pre-requisite. The course involves a variety of oral and written tasks. Language materialwill reflect cultural aspects of the Spanish speaking world.

Description: The module is designed for ex-Beginners in Spanish who wish to move into mainstreamstudies of language and literature. The title of the language programme, Revise and Consolidate, explains its goal:revision and progressively deeper understanding of the language, intensive practice in oral, spoken and written skills.In Texts, study is planned so that thorough vocabulary acquisition, analysis of syntax and understanding of extendedtexts can be realistically achieved. This course not only opens the way to Spanish Honours for ex-Beginners butcould be useful for students who wish to study other subjects in Spain at a later date.
