School News

Donuts and Dads – A Great Combination! Ocee students really enjoyed breakfasting with their dads, grandpas, and other significant men in their lives last week during the annual PTA-sponsored Donuts for Dads event. Thanks to PTA and to Ms. Rita Bechara and her legion of volunteers for supplying the delicious donuts and beverages. A good time was had by all!

THE OCEE "LEARNING COMMONS" NEEDS YOU We are looking for parents who are able to give their time to help keep the Ocee "Learning Commons" running smoothly. Any amount of time you can give, great or small, will be much appreciated. The media center staff looks forward to working with you and so appreciates the gift of your valuable time! Volunteering in the Learning Commons is a great way for new parents to get to know the school and the staff, and the students love to meet and

have the help of volunteers when they visit the library!! Please visit the following Sign Up Genius Links to volunteer over the coming months:

To sign up between October 19th and December 18th - http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b4eafa62ca02-thenew. To sign up between January 6th and March 9th - http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b4eafa62ca02-theocee1.

Ocee ES Family Science Night: October 28, 2015 - 6:30-8:00 Please join us for Family Science Night sponsored by IEEE-Atlanta on Wednesday, October 28, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. This event brings families together to learn about all aspects of science. Family Science Night brings in guest science instructors to lead families in scientific discovery, whether it’s physical science, engineering, or information technology. Your family will explore science by participating in three different hands-on activities or demonstrations with scientists from throughout the Atlanta area. Please note: all families must pre-register for this event to receive a “ticket.” Registration forms are being sent home on October 8. Extras can be found in the front office (one form per family, please).

Career Day In order to expose students to the career world, Ocee Elementary School is excited to announce Career Day for students in grades 1 & 2 on Thursday, October 29, 2015. Career Day for grades 3-5 will take place in the spring (Wednesday, March 9

th). We still

need speakers in the areas of transportation and distribution. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in participating in Career Day, please have them contact Mrs. Aronowitz - [email protected].

Creativity, Curiosity, and Critical Thinking Combined: Lessons from the STEAM Lab

Ocee Learning Commons November 13, 11:00-12:00

Have you ever asked yourself: How can I use my child’s natural curiosity to stimulate learning? How can I help my child analyze what he/she has learned, rather than just recall it? What kinds of questions should I be using with my child to help him/her be excited about learning? How can I help my child learn through pictures and not just reading words? Where can I find activities that reinforce skills and are challenging but are still fun? Using STEAM Lab lessons as examples, Ms. Ann Scott Hanks will address all of these questions in a discussion on “inquiry-based learning.” Leave with numerous strategies for how to become the “guide on the side” for your young scholar.
