School Context

Fellgate Primary School is a unique community primary school within South Tyneside. Its two buildings cater for mainstream children and children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Fostering an ethos of inclusion for all our pupils, many activities see children of all abilities learning and achieving together. The most important things to us at Fellgate Primary School are the children themselves and we use a creative curriculum to develop, inspire and challenge all learners and prepare them for the future. Our curriculum is broad and balanced and develops skills across all subjects but also spiritual, moral, cultural, social emotional and physical aspects of learning. The school holds the Activemark, BECTA information and communication technology and Healthy Schools Awards. Fellgate school also has access to a Multi- use Games Area (MUGA), this is sited on our school field, however Hedworthfield Community Association manages the games area.

Ethos and Values

Behaviour “Creating a nurturing, structured, calm environment with a positive ethos is central to the establishment and maintenance of high standards of good behaviour.” Our aim is to develop in pupils a sense of self-management and an acceptance of responsibility for their own actions, to be secure enough in the management of their own behaviour, to be able to transfer these skills to other situations beyond the school environment. We believe in mutual respect between all persons in a community where everyone behaves. Attention is paid by everyone to good behaviour. General positive behaviour is encouraged by high expectations and by example on the part of the staff. This is achieved by staff being aware of how they speak to and behave towards each other and pupils. A consistent approach is necessary from all staff for pupils to realise what is expected of them to become successful learners. Children are expected to show care and consideration to each other, encouraged to be positive role models and behave in an age appropriate way. At times a flexible approach is needed in order to allow pupils to manage their behaviour. Bullying Fellgate Primary School will not tolerate bullying or intimidation in any way, shape or form, and will provide framework that can be used to meet the demands and most of all, the particular incident. If bullying does occur, all pupils should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. Bullying hurts and no one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect and this includes pupils reporting an incident that may not be perceived by an adult to be very serious. School have a responsibility to respond promptly and effectively to all issues of bullying, whether relating to victim/target, to perpetrator/bully or to bystanders who encourage the bullying activity by watching, doing nothing to help and/or by actively supporting the bullying act through shouting encouragement, recording the activity on a mobile phone etc. Full policies for Behaviour Management and Anti-bullying are available on our School Website.

Our Governing Body

The Governing body at Fellgate work with the Headteacher and staff as a ‘critical friend’. We are not there to intervene on the day to day running of the school, as this is the Headteacher and Staffing role. Our Governing body is made up of Parents, LEA and also Community Governors, giving us a broad spectrum of views, skills and opinions to help us make the decisions needed. We attend various meetings with the whole Governing body and also smaller Faculty meetings that look at more specific areas of school business . All our Governors are fully committed to pushing Fellgate to provide the best possible education for our children. We do that by:- Thinking and working strategically to help to raise standards Proactively monitoring and evaluating progress towards the school’s priorities and

targets Supporting the headteacher and staff as well as challenging their expectations. Some of the major responsibilities of the Governing Body include also:- Being accountable for the performance of the school to parents and the community Planning the school’s future direction Making decisions on the school’s budget and staffing Making sure the national curriculum is taught Deciding how the school can encourage pupil’s spiritual, moral and social development Making sure the school provides for all its pupils, including those with special needs. A list of the Governors can be found on the school website www.fellgateprimary.co.uk, along with a lot more information about Fellgate Primary School.

Curriculum

At Fellgate Primary School we recognise, and value the wealth of experiences and learning young children bring to school. We build upon these foundations, planning and scaffolding opportunities that enable children to take the next steps in their learning. We encourage independent learning and aim to foster an enjoyment of learning that they can take with them through adulthood. Our aim at Fellgate is to enliven the curriculum and create a curriculum “to develop a modern, world-class curriculum that will inspire and challenge all learners and prepare them for the future.” Our curriculum is broad and balanced and develops skills across all subjects but also spiritual, moral, cultural, social, emotional and physical aspects of learning. There are three stages of learning in primary school: Foundation, Key stage 1 and Key stage 2. Reception is the second and final year of the Foundation Stage in the primary school. Learning is organised as six areas; personal, social and emotional development, communication, language and literacy, mathematical development, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development and creative development. In Key stage 1 the children follow the national curriculum for Literacy and Numeracy and also learn within the other 4 areas of learning, building on from all they have learned in reception. In Key stage 2 the children follow the national curriculum for Literacy and Numeracy and also learn skills across all the other subjects.

Page 10: School Prospectus - Amazon Web Servicessmartfuse.s3.amazonaws.com/.../2015/12/school-prospectus.pdfSchool Prospectus 2015 –2016 Entry Fellgate Primary School, Oxford Way, Jarrow,

In every class subjects other than Literacy and Numeracy are taught and learnt under the umbrella of a “theme” or “topic”. In this way subject skills can be learnt in a more real context and opportunities can be planned to enable children to apply and use their skills rather than in isolated lessons. Enrichment activities and Educational Visits We plan our curriculum according to the needs of the learner in ways that are meaningful and relevant to today’s society and culture. We also plan a range of trips and visitors to both enhance and enrich the curriculum for the children. These take place every half term. Enrichment activities this year having included visits to Farmers Market, Life Centre, South Shields Museum and Library, Winder Gardens and the Laing Art Gallery. Curriculum Leaflets At the beginning of every topic/theme parents will be sent a curriculum leaflet that outlines the key skills and activities for that topic, gives ideas on how you can support your child at home and also suggested trips and visits. During each half term you will be invited into school to work alongside your child on an activity linked to the curriculum theme. Homework A new policy for homework was introduced in September 09. In addition to regular reading, spellings and numeric work, a series of homework activities will be planned for the half term. Each activity will earn points towards a point target at the end of half term. Activities will be linked to the class topic that term for parents, carers and children to work through together.

Strategic ICT Vision ICT Curriculum

At Fellgate, our aim is to enable pupils to use ICT confidently, effectively and independently. Children are encouraged to use ICT across the curriculum for investigating, recording, organising, control and communication. The School has a computer suite with 16 networked workstations as well as a number of laptops in every classroom and a bank of wireless, networked computers. There is Broadband internet access in all learning areas and the ICT Suite. Children are taught about the safe and responsible use of the internet as outlined in the school’s e-Safety policy. At Fellgate, we provide ICT opportunities for our children to extend their learning outside school. Our children have access to a Learning Platform where they can continue their learning at home, email their classmates and teachers and share their school work with their parents. Children also have access to Mathletics - an online Numeracy website where children can complete challenges set by their teacher and compete against other Mathletes from all over the world. This has been shown to significantly improve Numeracy Standards. We work closely with our Openzone partners to give children access to as broad a range of ICT skills and equipment as possible. Our children have recently taken part in Video-Conferencing, Animation, and Green-Screen film making as part of their Curriculum work. We also participated in the climate connections competition and won the trophy for the highest score. “The extensive use of computer technology makes the learning fun and more meaningful.” OFSTED.

Committed to ICT

Facebook Project Fellgate has been asked by the Local Authority to take part in a Facebook Pilot Project and has been running since April 12. This project was setup to focus on communication and sharing information with parents, carers and the outside world. The Company we are working with are called Social Schools Media who have set up our Facebook page that ensures e-safety principles and allows us to communicate and have dialogue in a transparent yet safe way. They do this by using a background app to create an interface page. Our school page does not include most features of a personal page. It has status updates, photos can be posted. There will be no friends, you can only ‘like” us. Only profile pictures will be shared unless people allow us to see more of their profile. Please note as profile pictures are shared then they need to be suitable. The only people that can see the contents of the school page other that the front page are people who have been accepted. We will be posting photos as we do on our website however, they cannot be tagged by anyone and most will only be visible by people who have ‘liked” us and we have accepted. As you will see this is not a normal Facebook address as this is an interface through SSM. Please do have a look and push ‘like’ to see how it works by logging on to: http://on.fb.me/fellgate. Once you have pushed the ‘like’ SSM will receive and email and once accepted you will be able to look at the page contents. Please can we assure parents that this project is safe, children cannot be identified and cannot be tagged. It is in no way to encourage underage users onto Facebook. Any children under the age of 14 trying to contact us, will not be accepted.

School Meals

Breakfast club This club takes place each school morning from 08.00am. The cost per day is £2.00. School Meals Service From September 2014, every child in KS1 is entitled to a free school meal. School meals are healthy, well balanced and nutritious. They pack in all the essential vitamins and minerals children need to help them grow, develop and fight infection and have the energy to lead happy and healthy lives. School meals give children an excellent opportunity to try new foods early in the developing years. Parents we feel like to be more involved in meal choices, so are system is simple. Menus are given to parents to discuss with their child and make meal choices in advance for four weeks. These will be your choices for the whole school academic year, and your selections will be automatically repeated every four weeks until the end of that term. We also have in addition to the menu a sandwich meal deal. This consists of fresh sandwiches with assorted salad or vegetables, fruit or desert and a drink (fresh fruit juice or milk). This scheme has proved very popular. Food Partnership The Food for Life Partnership is a network of schools and communities across England committed to transforming food culture. We aim to reach out through schools to give communities access to seasonal, local and organic food, and to the skills they need to cook and grow fresh food. There are 4000 schools currently in the ‘partnership.’ At Fellgate Primary we have now obtained the Bronze Level Award. We are working with the Local Authority, our catering staff and the pupil Food Action group to enhance our school meals and the dining experience. Pupils are learning about their food and where it comes from. Each class has a planting box and through practical experience everyone is learning how to grow and cook food. This may then inspire families to join in and plant some of their own foods.

Autistic Unit We have an attached specialist provision of a 36 place Unit for children with an Autism Disorder (ASD) as from September 2015 there has been an additional Portable classroom with six additional children attending our Unit. Admissions procedures are controlled by the Local Authority (LA) and require a diagnosis and for the child to have a statement of SEN or at least have the pro-cess initiated. Six classes of 6 pupils operate with a teacher leading in each class, supported by two senior educational practitioners. Intense knowledge of the child is gained through assessment and tracking using autistic specific criteria, and results in a detailed profile providing for an individ-ualised and personalised educational programme. This programme provides access to learning situations at developmental levels across a relevant curriculum as well as age appropriate opportunities. Current research around the area of ASD is continuously explored to ensure that the children benefit from all available information. Please see separate brochure for details.
