6. Summaries of presentations
6.1 Universal Design for Learning in Practice
Danilo Zimšek (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science UM) and Alenka
Gajšt (Slovenian Association of Disabled Students)
The presentation on Universal Design for Learning presented the three guiding principles of this
approach. It stressed how flexibility and providing options in presentation, expression and
engagement for students in higher education not only increases the learning opportunities for
disabled students but all students who have different learning styles and preferences. This
approach decreases the need for special adjustments and allows equal participation also for
students who do not wish to disclose their disability.
6.2 The Efficiency of E-learning Material Templates for Persons with Disabilities
Monika Ferk (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science UM)
When preparing e-material for persons with disabilities the content preparation phase has to
focus mainly on the accessibility aspect, then follow design preparation phase and the selection
and integration of media in the program. Some of the most common problems faced by persons
with disabilities include inaccessibility of Web sites, inaccessibility of learning materials and
different learning needs due to their disabilities. One of the most prominent problems is that e-
learning IT courses are not specifically designed for them. There is also a misalignment of
guidelines for the development of accessible teaching and learning materials and Web
accessibility standards and guidelines. The problem is also that e-learning models are commonly
designed for sighted students and do not incorporate considerations for blind and visually
impaired persons.
Persons with disabilities such as the deaf and hearing impaired need adapted and extensive
support. E-learning materials extensively use visually oriented information that are usually in the
form of graphics, photos, and others. E-learning materials are mainly on demand web-based
video lectures, that are accompanied by subtitles and sign language translations. New

technologies also enable them to use visual demonstrations, animations and virtual augmented
reality solutions.
E-learning material for persons with autism spectrum disorder should be based on Extensive use
of visual oriented animations and demonstrations. Because persons with ASD like to ask many
questions about a certain topic, the material should use avatars that answer those questions. As
persons with ASD do not like surprises, E-material should have predicted structure and events to
avoid surprises and the template should also contain information about the next slide.
6.3 ICT Solutions for supporting deaf and hard of hearing
dr. Matjaž Debevc (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science UM)
Due to rapid development of information-communication technology (ICT), we are witnesses of
significant differences in all areas of life. In particular, these have been especially obvious in the
field of education, since sign language users, gained with a help of ICT possibilities for equal
inclusion in social, societal and economic environment.
The output of merging both technology and education as e-learning is also becoming a field in
which allows sign language users learning on distance and learning with techniques accessible
to them. The importance of using ICT use in higher education institutions for sign language
users is strongly emphasized on national and international level, since the number of students
with disabilities is rapidly growing.
In the presentation, technical and organisational regulations in education has been presented,
and accessible technical and education tools. Additionally, evaluation tools and guidelines, such
as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) has been presented.

collected those employment experiences through focus groups interviews to see how effective
legislation provision really are for young people who face difficulties because of special needs.

interesting we also prepared some practical tasks on employment support for people with
disabilities.
