    Testing during COVID-19 2020-2021:

    ● During school and office closures due to COVID-19, NACC will be doing virtual testing.

    ○ A NACC tester will call the day prior to the appointment to prepare families for

either a video conference or telephone meeting for the time of the scheduled

appointment. This Provisional English Level Screening uses sets of questions to

screen a student’s abilities to listen and speak in English.

    ● When schools and offices reopen the students who have been tested provisionally will be screened in their schools using the standard screening tools. A final determination about the student’s eligibility for language services will be made based on those screening test results. Families will be notified of their student’s English language level and eligibility for services again at that time.

    ● When schools and offices reopen, new students to Boston Public Schools will attend

their appointments at the NACC which is located on the 2nd floor of the Bolling Building

(2300 Washington Street). Assessments are administered by multilingual staff on

    scheduled times. 11

    Registration: How Assignment Works

    BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS

    ‣ The school your child is assigned to depends on:

    ‣ The priority registration period when you register your child.

    ‣ Your child’s other priorities (such as siblings, East Boston, present school, etc.)

    ‣ Your child’s random lottery number

    ‣ Demand and available space at each school

    Registration: How Assignment Works

    BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Students are generally assigned in the following order:

    ‣ 1. Students who already attend the school

    ‣ 2. Students with a guaranteed pathway

    ‣ 3. Students with siblings at a school

    ‣ 4. Students without additional priorities

    ‣ 5. Administrative assignment

There are additional details within each priority. For students with the same priority, their random lottery number determines the order.

For students living in East Boston, see appendix for more information

If there is no space available in a school and program, students are added to a wait list. Wait list positions are based on the registration period when the family registered (or requested a transfer), the student’s priorities, and and their lottery number. We cannot guarantee that seats will become available and students will be able to move off of a wait list.

During the registration periods, wait lists will be processed automatically as seats become available. After the registration periods have concluded, you will receive a call or email to confirm your interest in a seat off the waitlist.

    ● In mid-June, at the end of the assignment periods, families will be placed on only one wait list. This will be your highest ranked school, unless you indicate otherwise by contacting a Welcome Center.

Wait lists will expire at the end of November 2021 for grades 1-12, and at the end of January 2022 for grades K0-K2.If you do not receive a seat off of a wait list before they expire, you will need to come back to a Welcome Center and reapply for a transfer to be placed back on the waitlist for the following year. Waitlists do not roll over from year to year. 16
