Let’s Learn Something New!MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday in May, honors all of the men and women who died fi ghting for our country. These men and women dedicated their lives so we can be a free nation. Having a day to honor the soldiers who lost their lives started after the Civil War (1861-1865). The original name was Decoration Day. Decoration Day was started on May 5, 1868 by General John A. Logan, Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, head of the Organization of Union Veterans to honor union soldiers who died in the Civil War. It was called Decoration Day because family members of fallen soldiers decorated their graves with fl owers. The fi rst service to honor fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery was held on May 30, 1868. President Ulysses S. Grant

was present at the ceremony and General James Garfi eld gave a speech. Decoration Day originally only honored the soldiers who died in the Civil War. After World War I it was changed to all soldiers who lost their lives in war. On May 11, 1950 Decoration Day was changed to Memorial Day. In 1966, Congress along with President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York the birthplace of Memorial Day, and President Richard Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971 The offi cial fl ower of Memorial Day are red poppies. People celebrate Memorial Day by placing fl owers on soldier’s graves, fl ying fl ags at half-staff , attending parades and remembering soldiers who lost their lives.

LEST WE FORGET

Talk about it:• Where are the boy and his grandfather?• What are they doing?• Why is it important to remember those

who have given their lives for our country?

• How will you observe Memorial Day?

REFLECT AND REMEMBER e lune is an American poetic form similar to Japanese Haiku, but shorter and less restrictive. A lune consists of three short lines dealing with a single topic. It may follow one of several forms. e rst form counts syllables. Line one is 5 syllables, line two is 3 and line three is 5. For example: e soldier ghts, bleeds, even dies,to serve his country. A second form counts words. e rst line consists of three words, the second 5, and the third 3 again. For example: e soldier goes.He ghts where he’s sentfar from home. Unlike haiku, a lune may deal with any subject. It may be about a person, an event, a thing or a feeling. No thought or topic is o limits.Choose one of the forms above and write your own lune (or two).

Effective Friday, May 15 all ranger districts of the Coronado National Forest will increase campfire and smoking restrictions in southeastern Arizona. Beginning May 15, and until rescinded, the following are prohibited:• Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove including fires in developed campgrounds or improved sites.• Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building.• Discharging a firearm except while engaged in a lawful hunt pursuant to state, federal, or tribal laws and regulations.• Operating any internal combustion engine, except operating motorized vehicles on designated roads so long as you park in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the roadway.• Welding, or operating acetylene or other torches with an open flame.• Using an explosive. Fireworks are always prohibited year-round on federal lands. Violation of restrictions on federal lands is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor, which includes a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual and up to $10,000 for organizations and possible imprisonment for not more than six

(6) months or both. Violators may also be held personally responsible for reimbursement of fire suppression costs. Arizona and New Mexico state laws carry similar penalties. Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns and heaters possessing shut-off devices are allowed. When using a portable stove, make sure the area is clear of grasses and other fine fuels. Prevent stoves from tipping and starting a fire. Cigarettes should never be thrown out the window of a vehicle. Instead, ashtrays should be used in order to prevent wildfires. Never park a vehicle over dead grass; the catalytic converter can ignite the vegetation. Fire conditions as well as localized closures and restrictions are subject to change. Because tribal, federal, state, and local mandates are different, they may have some differences in their restriction notices. For a more detailed explanation concerning agency restrictions and fire information in general, please contact the nearest land management agency office where you plan to work or play, visit http://wildlandfire.az.gov or call the toll-free Southwest Fire Restrictions Hotline at 1-877-864-6985.

Students in the Mammoth-San Manuel School District will be able to continue their education this summer despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditional school ended quite abruptly, leaving some students in the lurch and parents and educators scrambling to continue learning from a distance. “Given that Arizona has not moved into Phase 3 where

we can have gatherings, we will continue to do what we can to decrease the gap of learning that is so often presented during the summer months for students,” said Superintendent Julie Dale-Scott. “Based on data and teacher input we will offer summer school to those elementary students selected in the same way we have been, through online and paper packets (as needed) for those who struggle and could be impacted the most.” Parents are encouraged to check with teachers and the school for more information.

A smile, given or received, strongly influences the tone of any given day. Unfortunately, receding gums

have become exceedingly common in our society. And, though gum recession does not necessarily unduly detract from a genuine smile, it suggests a process that could escalate into dental deterioration. Ironically, gum recession is often caused by individuals being over zealous in their attempts to maintain a healthy, vibrant smile. Brush pressure and stiffness play strongly in this process. Certainly, incomplete oral hygiene is responsible for the majority of gingivitis, or gum disease…in particular, gum infection and plaque buildup. When food gets trapped under the gum line it

can breed a multitude of bacteria that will eat away the gums and cause severe inflammation that will further weaken the gum tissue and make it susceptible to deterioration. Ultimately it can progress deeper into the bone structure of the jaw. This is then referred to as periodontal disease which severely jeopardizes a healthy smile. It is often believed that once the gums have receded, there is little one can due to bring them back. However, there are a few oddball treatments that may reap decent results. One such treatment is “Oil Pulling.” This involves swishing oil, often coconut or sesame oil, around the mouth for 5 to 15 minutes at a time and then spitting it out.

This is done every day, or even twice a day. Another reported treatment for gum recession and gingivitis is to apply eucalyptus oil to the gums once or twice a day. As with any condition, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In the case of gingivitis, the answer is hygiene, hygiene, hygiene. In some countries it is enough to eat a good local diet with lots of crisp and crunchy foods that clean away the tartar that can cause inflammation and predispose to gum recession. Here in this country we must purposely clean our teeth with brush and mild adhesive toothpaste, at the same time gently massaging the gums to keep them

Bulk services changed on March 1 to the second Thursday of each month and may be scheduled before noon on the day prior to your area pick-up date. Commercial services are every Wednesday, starting April 15. Please place both garbage and recycling carts out the night prior or by 6 a.m. on your service day. Allow 3 feet between each cart and 10 feet away from cars, mailboxes, landscape or other items that may interfere with service and 2 feet away from the building. Face cart so lid opens toward the street (handles toward building). Do not overfi ll or place additional garbage on top. Lids must be fully closed. This reduces airborne trash on windy days. Wild re Safety Much of the southwest is considered a high-hazard fi re environment. Within this hazardous environment are individual homes, and entire communities ill-prepared to survive an intense wildfi re. It is not a question of “if” a wildfi re will occur, but when. The odds of losing human life and property are growing. The Town of Kearny would like to protect you and the community from the dangers of wildfi res. The Fire Chief is very concerned about this upcoming fi re season. Even though we have received more rain than usual, it has caused more weeds. Once the rain stops, the weeds will dry out and this will make for a dangerous fi re season. Please clear weeds, dry grass, dry shrubs or dead trees surrounding your property. Thank you for your support.

invigorated and healthy. This is best done with a soft toothbrush, applying very little pressure. Technology has blessed us with a variety of electronic toothbrushes to help with this. It allows us to gently move the brush around the gum line while timing the brushing for optimal results. Dental floss is still the gold standard for keeping our teeth. “Doc, do I have to floss ALL my teeth?” “No,” replies the dentist, “only the ones you want to keep.” Water pics are now available that can vigorously clean out hard to reach areas while massaging the gums. One can add a good disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide to the water, or even mouth wash, though the use of mouth wash on a daily basis may overkill the resident bacteria, including those that are beneficial. The idea is to keep the mouth clear of harmful bacteria and bacteria harboring debris, while invigorated the gums with mild yet stimulating massage effects. GINGIVITISContinued from page 7

Since 2012, the Town of Florence and Southwest Value Partners, a real-estate investment firm, have initiated a series of political and legal actions against Taseko Florence Copper to prevent the company from opening its in-situ copper recovery (ISCR) facility in the Town of Florence. On Friday, May 7, the Arizona Court of Appeals decisively ruled that Florence Copper’s permit to operate its Production Test Facility is valid and meets all the requirements of state law. This ruling upholds earlier favorable decisions by the Arizona Water Quality Appeals Board and Superior Court. Florence Copper and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality were also awarded attorney’s fees and costs, as a result of their multi-year effort to defend the permit from unsuccessful legal challenges brought by the Town of Florence and Southwest Value Partners. The Florence Town Council has lost a current total of seven legal challenges, accruing a legal debt rumored to be in the millions, and is expected to have to pay Florence Copper something in the excess of $2 million in the court-awarded attorney fees and costs. The Florence Copper Project continues to operate and perform as designed, meeting performance criteria and obligations set down by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Florence Copper wins decisive court victory
