camps and activitiesCultural tours,
inspire and engage children, fostering
cultural awareness and interactive learning.Student engagement and passion for learning is enhanced when we take the classroom outdoors and
provide opportunities to interact with new environments and cultures . When students have an opportunity to learn outdoors they start to ‘live their learning’. This experiential method of teaching has been part of
traditional Aboriginal culture for millennia. Passing on skills and ancestral knowledge from one generation to the next through practising lore and maintaining customs has preserved the Aboriginal culture, making it
the oldest living culture in the world today.
Aboriginal cultural tours and activities provide this same immersive learning experience, giving students the opportunity to explore authentic, project based learning in an outdoor classroom context. With hands on
examples that include hunting and gathering, making tools and implements using only natural resources and fostering a deeper understanding of the unique cultural identity of the first Australians.
Many of the tours offer authentic ‘on country’ experiences, interacting with cultural custodians and elders, who share their knowledge of the land and offer an insight into Aboriginal culture through Dreaming stories,
song, dance and a range of activities that encourage group participation and cooperation.

Many of our students come from Perth and have led privileged lives,
and for them to be exposed to the challenges of remote living
and the richness of the culture, despite the perceived harshness,
is an experience that remains present in their minds for many
years to come. Visiting Morapoi is often the highlight of their year.

Aboriginal On Country Experiences connect children with nature and culture in
meaningful and memorable ways that stay with them long after the experience
cultural activities
Whether it’s ancient Dreaming stories told around a campfire, cooking freshly caught crab or whitchetty grubs over the open coals, tracking wildlife across the desert sands or making a traditional or spear or tapping sticks, children
feel better, behave better and learn more when we combine learning with outdoor nature-based and cultural activities. When children leave behind the social and technological complexities of modern life, it reignites their
natural curiosity, inventiveness and sense of adventure.

Leah Rakabundel | Team LeaderYouth Health and Wellbeing Programs
The Australian Red Cross team in Broome run numerous youth health
and wellbeing programs and Uptuyu Aboriginal Adventure Tours are our
go-to provider for cultural adventure camps. We have had a number of
memorable camps at Udialla Springs enjoying the beauty of the river,
catching fresh fish, collecting mussels, learning about bush medicine
and cooking kangaroo tail. Jo and Neville take the stress out of running
camps and their flexibility, professionalism and local knowledge make
them a dream to work with.
Wow what an amazing time we had with Josh! The kids
absolutely loved it! One boy couldn't get over how much
knowledge Josh had about his culture. I couldn't fault a
thing from the initial greeting, his talk drawing in the sand
giving the kids a vision of the land, playing the didgeridoo in
the cave, him allowing and trusting the kids to explore at
their will, the wonderful bush tucker lunch, his interactive
music and letting the kids join in, making fire which topped
their interest, artefacts display, and his wonderful warm
truthful style of delivery! Well done Koomal Dreaming!
The benefits of On Country Cultural Experiences.Ÿ Scientific evidence indicates that direct exposure to nature is essential for physical and emotional health as well as
normal child development.Ÿ On Country, cross cultural encounters break down barriers and stereotypes, allowing children to gain a better
understanding of Australia’s first people through cultural exchange and positive learning experiences.Ÿ Shared knowledge – As the world’s oldest living culture, the Aboriginal culture has survived by the passing of
knowledge from one generation to the next. On Country classrooms give children the opportunity to experience some of this vast collective knowledge of country and culture.
