VOCABULARY ACTIVITIES

One of the most important but often most difficult parts of learning

science is learning the terms associated with it. The best way to learn a new

word is to use it. In keeping with this philosophy, you will be expected to do

a certain number of vocabulary activities in each unit. These different

activities are designed to appeal to students with all different interests and

strengths. Each activity has been assigned a value. In each unit, you will be

asked to do activities that total to a certain number of marks. Below is a

description of each activity, as well as the number of marks associated with

it.

Please Note:

. You must do at least 2 different types of activities for each unit.

. You will be expected to do at least five (5) different kinds of activities

through the course of the year.

• You must use all of the words once before you can use the same

words again. This may mean you have to wait until further into the

unit to complete some activities. Looking up words on the internet or

in dictionaries is not advised, because some words have many

definitions, and some definitions are too complicated!

• As a guideline, you should expect to complete about 10 marks worth

of activities per week.

• Any activity which says 'template available' can be found in paper

form in your science classroom

Crossword Puzzle - Template Available - 20 Marks

Each crossword puzzle template has blanks for 14 words (7 across and

7 down). Start by fitting the words into the grid, making sure they cross and

intersect. Then create a clue for each word that would help the solver fill in

the puzzle. A blank puzzle (suitable for copying), as well as an answer key

are expected.

Flashcards - Template Available - 15 Marks

A complete set of flashcards is 6 cards (1 sheet). On the front of

each card, write 1 term and draw a picture that would represent that

term. On the back of the card the term is defined. Flashcards make great

study aids for tests and exams!

Memory Game - Cards Available - 15 Marks

Memory is a game where two players try to make pairs by

remembering where common cards are located. When making a memory

card set, you choose ten words. You create two different representations

of each word - for example the word itself, a picture, or definition. The

players would then try to match the cards which represent thers_ame word.

Cryptogram - 10 Marks

A cryptogram is a

puzzle where all of the letters have been replaced by numbers, pictures, or

even other letters. The solver's job is to figure out the key - which symbol

stands for each letter. To create the puzzle, create your key and then list 12

words from the unit. Give the solver 2 clues, as well as a couple of letters to

get them started. An example of a cryptogram will be done in class.

Multiple Choice Questions - 10 Marks

Create a set of 10 multiple choice questions that relate to the topics in

the unit. Each question should have 4 possible answers, and the answers

should all be at least feasible. Please include an answer key. Good questions

tend to show up on tests or exams...

Outburst Cards - Cards Available - 10 Marks

Outburst is a multiplayer game where one player says a topic, and

the other players have to talk about that topic, trying to say each of the ten

items on the list. To create your outburst cards, choose 10 terms. Write one

term on a card, then list 10 words that relate directly to that term.

Word Cycle - Template Available - 10 Marks

A word cycle shows the connections between words. A vocabulary

word goes in each of the circles, and then in the spaces in between goes

an explanation of how the words are connected, through similarities or

differences. Note: The focus is on the explanation. Words only are not

enough!!

Word Search - Template Available - 5 Marks

In this common puzzle, 15 words are

filled into an empty grid. The rest of the grid is filled with random letters. The

solver's job is to find and circle the words. A blank puzzle (suitable for

copying) and an answer key are expected.

Taboo Cards - Cards Available - 5 Marks

Taboo is a multiplayer game where

one person tries to make another person say a certain word. The only catch

is that there are 5 words that are 'taboo' which they are not allowed to use

in their description. Your job is to make 5 cards using one term on each

card. Then you must decide five words that would be very useful in giving a

description which will be taboo.

Compare and Contrast - Template Available - 5 Marks

A compare and contrast frame highlights similarities and differences

between terms. Only certain words will be acceptable to use in the frame.

Ask the teacher for a suitable pair. You will need 3 similarities, 3

differences, and a summarizing sentence.

Word Art - 5 Marks

Word art involves showing the meaning of a word using only a picture

or drawing of the word itself. Simple examples are LARGE and small. In

order to receive the 5 marks, you must do 2 different words (1/2 page

each). Some artistic flair and/or color is expected.

Directions:

Read the list of words in the circle above. Select one word and pace it in any oval. In the next

oval, place another word that is related to the first. They could be synonyms,

antonyms, steps in a process, examples of something, and so on. Be prepared to f inish the statement "Word A is related to word B because "Write a note on the band in between

the words to remind yourself of the relationship. Continue this process until you have placed all

the words. Plan ahead; the last few words will be tricky to place.
