The new framework

Page 19: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

Introduction

oNew Ofsted Framework: September 2015oJudged against your own school policies – no expected styleso“Evidence over time”

Page 20: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

General Points

oDefinite reinforcement of judgements based on evidence of good teaching over an extended period of timeoStudent interviews, work scrutiny, policy matching, short observations, no individual teacher observation grades issued

Page 21: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

Teaching and Learning

oQ10oTen key questions to promote reflective and evaluative lesson planningoMatched to new frameworkoLeading to “good” lessonsoConsistently delivered can lead to “outstanding” lessons

Page 22: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

Activity 1 – Which lead to the best learning in Science?

oHexagon sort – discuss the statementsoPlace the statements in a hexagonal patternoThree most important at the top oFour beneath those (across middle)oThree at the bottomo15 minutes

Lesson Planning

Page 24: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

Activity 2 – Exemplification – what does it mean to us in Science?

oEach table has a different question from the Q10 listoAt your table:

oDiscuss the question, ensure a shared mental understanding

oWrite/draw/record a list of practical activities/ideas/anecdotes that would contribute to a YES answer to this question

o Elect a spokesperson to share with the room (3/4 minutes max per group)

Next Steps

P – Park it for now, I’m not sure how to do this, I need advice and/or training on this aspect. I shall seek help from departmental colleagues who do this well ……

R – Resilience, this may prove challenging or is outside my normal routine but I’m going to try and plan for this to happen

O – Obstacle. The thing that is stopping me from planning this aspect is…… I will pass on this obstacle to …… so that it can be removed.

Reminders

• Current Y7, Y8 and Y9 will all receive NUMBERS attainment measures at KS4 (9-1)

• The demand of the new KS3 has been increased

• How Science Works has become Working Scientifically

• Increased Literacy and Numeracy expectations• Still no external assessment

Measuring Progress…

…without levels (or maybe with levels if you’ve kept them)

The National Expectation:

In old money L4 C/B

Page 32: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

Activity 1

With your shoulder partner:•Describe how you are assessing KS3•Describe what you are reporting to the school monitoring system•Describe what you are reporting to parents

Page 33: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

The Lancashire Model

• English and Mathematics have launched• Big uptake of Lancashire schools• Science and MFL will launch in Spring term• Other subjects now beginning pilot phase

Page 34: Science SLDM Autumn 2015 Woodlands Conference Centre, Chorley Tuesday, 13 th October 2015

Common themes

Four Bands of attainment (A, B, C and D)

Band A – lowest attainers, arriving in Y7 below national expectation

Band D – highest attainers

Each band has a collection of descriptors that describe the skills a student is exhibiting

Works on a best fit model

Activity 2

Using the working scientifically section of the KS3 POS (page 4), identify skills that you would anticipate a Band A student (lowest attainers) might have already.

Remember that the national expectation is that all learners be able to make progress in all these skills by the end of the Key Stage and that a Grade 5 trajectory student should be able to demonstrate a “sound grasp” of all of them
