Science Summary For...Solids, Liquids &
Gases.
By Ashwini
What’s Matter?
Matter is anything that has mass or takes up space.
What’s a Particle Model?
A model is used in science to make theories easier to
understand.
States And Phases
Matter is divided in to 3 main groups called a state or phase. They are:
Solid- in this particles are strongly bonded together. A solid is
incompressible meaning it can’t be pressed together.
Liquid- in this, the particles have a weak bond and it is compressible.
Gas- in a gas, the particles have no bond at all.
Changes of State A state can change into another state.
This happens by particular changes. These changes are:
Melting- a solid to a liquid Freezing- a liquid to a solid
Evaporation or Vaporisation- a liquid to a gas
Condensation- a gas to a liquidSublimation- A solid to a gas or gas
to a solid
Expansion
What’s expansion & what causes it?Expansion is when the particle models expand
causing they’re stat to expand. Expansion is caused by heat. When the models are
heated, they rapidly move against each other causing expansion. Contraction is the
exact opposite of expansion.
Expansion occurs in liquids, rather than solids and gases.
DensityWhat’s density?
Density is how closely packed matter is. Water always has a density of 1cm /g.
Calculating densityD = M V Example: Mass = 128
Volume= 245 Density= 128 245= 0.52244 cm /g
3
So density equals mass divided by volume.
3
Density… continued
If a object has lower density than a liquid, it floats in the liquid. If it has
higher density than the liquid, it sinks in the liquid. If it has the same density, it
stays in the middle.
Ice has less density than water.Salt water is more dense than pure
water.
