We really hope you are excited about joining HTC and having Science lessons in our Science labs!

In this presentation there is some important information for you about Science at HTC and some activities for you to complete.

We would love to see any work you do over the summer and reward you with positive accolades. All your positive accolades go towards you getting prizes and rewards.

You can either

1. Bring in any work you have done and give to your Science teacher in September.

2. Send an email attaching any work your have done including photos to [email protected]

Welcome to Science at HTC

Science teachers and staffThese are our Science teachers who you will meet in September.

Mr Adams – Subject LeaderMs ClarkeMrs CocksMr CrouchmanMrs FretterMr GregoryMr LandrumMiss MooreMiss Wilkinson

Miss Cutbush and Mrs Kearle are our Science Technicians – their job is to get the practicals ready for you to do.

Page 4: Science Transition Year 6 to 7!

You will find us in S block.

Where will you find us?

Page 5: Science Transition Year 6 to 7!

You will be expected to have every lesson the basic equipment you need in any lesson.

Pen

Pencil

Ruler

You will also need to bring your calculator to Science every lesson. Have a rubber with you as you will make mistakes when drawing diagrams and graphs and you will need to correct them.

If you have long hair – you must have a hair band to tie your hair up.

Equipment will you need for Science

Page 6: Science Transition Year 6 to 7!

We have rules in Science to keep you safe.

These must be followed at all times.

Page 7: Science Transition Year 6 to 7!

Activity 1:

Write down what Science means to you.

What does Biology mean to you?

What does Chemistry mean to you?

What does Physics mean to you?

What does Science mean to you?

Page 8: Science Transition Year 6 to 7!

Activity 2: let us know how you found Science at Primary school and what you are looking forward to at Secondary school.

What topics can you remember?

What was your favourite part?

What are you looking forward to about learning Science at secondary school?

Activity 3: Many students find coming into a Science lab a little scary. Remember it is just a special type of classroom, we have benches rather than tables. On your benches you will find these two services. Can you name them?

This picture shows ………………………… This picture shows ………………………

For a bonus, could you say what we might use each of these things for, maybe name a piece of Scientific equipment or simple Science experiment.

Activity 4: There can be a number of hazards during some Science lessons, especially when we are using chemicals. Can you name these hazard symbols?

Activity 5: Variables in a Scientific Investigation

A Scientific investigation aims to prove an idea.

A variable is a condition to either investigate, measure, or keep the same to produce valid

data.

Valid data is how well the data proves what you are investigating.

identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and control variable in the investigations the Simpson’s are carrying out.

Investigation 1 – Which shoes Homer?

Homer has just been picked for a bowling team.

• He wants to find the type of shoe which will give him the least

amount of slip.

• He has rubber shoes, leather shoes and the plastic shoes.

• He tests each shoe by running 2 metres and then measures how far

he slips down the ally.

Variable name What it means What it is in the investigation

Independent The condition being

changed/investigated

Dependent The condition being

measured

Control The conditions being kept the

same to produce valid data

Investigation 2 – Bart at the skateboard park

• On the way home from school Bart and Millhouse stop off at the

skate park.

• The two of them decide to have a downhill race on their skate boards

over a distance of 10 metres.

• For a challenge, Bart thinks it would be a good idea for both of them

to put different numbers of school books on their head’s.

• They get Lisa to time them and calculate their speed.

Variable name What it means What it is in the investigation

Independent The condition being

changed/investigated

Dependent The condition being

measured

Control The conditions being kept the

same to produce valid data

Investigation 3 – Lisa’s Science project

• Lisa decides to test how the length of rope will affect the number of

skips in 10 minutes.

• She has three different sizes of rope - 1 meter, 2 meters and 3 meters.

• She asks Marge to time her using a stopwatch and she asks Bart to

count the number of skips.

Variable name What it means What it is in the investigation

Independent The condition being

changed/investigated

Dependent The condition being

measured

Control The conditions being kept the

same to produce valid data

Investigation 4 – Maggie, up, up, and away!!

How many balloons does it take for Maggie to fly away?

• Bart and Maggie are playing with balloons.

• Bart blows each balloon up with 4cm3 of helium.

• He gives them to Maggie one by one and times how long it takes her

to start floating off the ground.

Variable name What it means What it is in the investigation

Independent The condition being

changed/investigated

Dependent The condition being

measured

Control The conditions being kept the

same to produce valid data

Investigations to try at home

You can change the colour of

flowers by placing the stems of a

cut flower into food dye!!

How colourful can you make yours?

The full method can be found below

https://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experi

ments/dyed-flowers/

You can use evaporation to separate salt

from salt water!

Soak some black card

with salt water. Leave

it in a windowsill.

Wait for the water to

evaporate and see what is leftover!

The full method can be found below

Make a boat that can be powered

with hand soap!

The full method can be found below

Use baking powder and vinegar to

blow up a balloon!!
