Message From the Senior Center
Maybe you have been wondering whether the Senior Center will be holding
our annual barbeque this summer. Well, wonder no more! This year our cele-
bration will be bigger and better than ever as we are collaborating with our par-
ent agency, WCCS, for a community event that will include a pig roast, pie
making contest, carnival, music and all the fun anyone could ask for. Bring the
kids, grandkids, and your neighbors for a chance to find out what “community
service” looks like! (check out flyer on Page on page 5 for details) We are very excited to introduce our new Senior Services Case Manager,
Jeannette Parros. Look for her introduction on page 3. Speaking of introduc-
tions, we are also very excited to list two new activities beginning in July; a
“Small Steps Group” and a storytelling group. Descriptions and times are
listed on page 7.
Our field trip this month will be to Paradise Ridge Winery and Sculpture
Garden in Santa Rosa. Such a beautiful venue and only 30 minutes away!
Come sign up and you will not be disappointed.
Have a fun and safe 4th of July.
Gratefully, Emily, Vicki, Jeanette, John and Allo

Year of the Senior (Y-O-T-S)
Let’s Celebrate Y-O-T-S!
YEAR OF THE SENIOR
by Diane Spain, AAA Advisory Council
Attitudes towards aging often blind us to the fact that millions of seniors are active, experi-
enced, capable and talented. They want to continue to remain engaged, productive and active.
Sonoma County is a leader in making healthy aging a priority. In January 2017, the Sonoma
County Board of Supervisors approved a plan that established 2017 as the YEAR OF THE
SENIOR (YOTS). Developed as a collaborative effort by the Economic Development Board
and the Human Services Department, it is a celebration of the economic and social contributions
of residents age 60+. The plan includes working with the Age-Friendly Sonoma County initia-
tive and increasing community understanding and support for the challenges that seniors face.
It also explores the economic potential of a growing senior population and provides support for
businesses, government and community organizations to expand opportunities for seniors.
Participation is vital to positive aging. There are many great programs offered in our communi-
ties. A few of these opportunities are:
Age-Friendly Sonoma County is recruiting volunteer “Age-Friendly Ambassadors” to help
assess, plan and implement what can be done to make cities and communities throughout Sono-
ma County more livable for older adults. In 2016, Sonoma County was accepted into the World
Health Organization’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (the Global
Network). Renee Tolliver with the Council on Aging serves as Sonoma County’s Age-Friendly
Communities Coordinator. Renee facilitates a countywide volunteer steering committee and
provides guidance to cities that want to join the Global Network and form their own task forces.
Supported by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors and overseen by Aging Together Sono-
ma County, Age-Friendly Sonoma County is a five-year effort. For information: Renee Tolliver

Senior Art Show This year’s theme is “Year of the Senior” and the celebration of its 20th An-
niversary. The Senior Art Show celebrates the creativity of Sonoma County seniors. The art
show is a free event held at the Finley Center from July 18th through September 8th. A Cookies
and Coffee reception to celebrate the talents of local seniors will be held at the Finley Center on
July 20th from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. For information: http://www.socoaaa.org/htm/senior-art.htm

Welcome, Jeannette Parros, New WCCS Senior Services Case Manager (by Christopher Oak Reinier)
What kind of training qualifies one to be the Senior Case Manager at West County Community Ser-
vices? Growing up on a 2000 acre ranch in New Mexico? Studying at the University New Mexico and
becoming a Dental Hygienist? Helping to manage a mortgage company in Ventura, California? Becom-
ing a paralegal in Colorado? Working in a Hispanic Ad agency? Being employed at Sprint in business
development? Raising three children? Performing throughout the West with her husband in theatrical
productions he has written and produced? Attending a Bible College and becoming an ordained Chap-
lain? Working for 10 years in Hospice? Managing an independent living community with 115 living
units in Napa?
Imagine the experience, the skills connecting with the variety of people which that background would
give to a person who has a compassionate heart and a strong, bright and generous spirit. Such a one is
Jeannette Parros, and West County Community Services is glad to welcome her as the new Senior Case
Manager.
Jeannette will be replacing Paulette Hall who has been appointed Senior Case Manager at Park Village
in Sebastopol. Jeannette’s new job will be to assist west county seniors find the resources they need to
live safely and independently.
“I want to help people who need help. That’s just who I am.”
Stop by the Senior Center and give yourself the pleasure of meeting Jeannette, the new WCCS Senior
Services Case Manager, especially if you are or you know a senior who needs an uplifting and compas-
sionate helping hand.

As part of our continuing fund raising ef-
forts, The Russian River Senior Center is
partnering with Mike’s Recycling, a local
company, to collect empty printer cartridges
and used cell phones for recycling. The empty
cartridges and old cell phones that we usually
throw away are actually worth money for us
through recycling. We have set up a collec-
tion box for you to drop off your items.
Thank you.
“I’m Home Alone”... is a free daily telephone check-in service by volunteers to elders, disabled and housebound individuals through-out Sonoma County. Registered clients receive a tele-phone call once a day, Monday through Friday (Saturday, Sunday and holidays can be arranged), with-in a four hour time frame. RECIPE CORNER
Correction: In Leena’s English Toffee Cookie recipe (June issue)1-1/2 cup chopped pecans and walnuts is called for. Not 1/2
cup as written.
HUSH PUPPIES (Submitted by Gladys Kerr)
1 pkg. of jiffy corn bread mix
1 egg
1/3 cup of milk
2 TSP. chopped green chilies
Mild Cheddar (about ¼ cup)
Vegetable oil
Mix all ingredients together with the exception of
the oil. Heat oil in a deep pan, deep enough to float
batter. Teaspoon small amounts into hot oil. Fry
till golden brown, turn, remove to paper towels to
drain. The consistency should be rather thick as to
form a small ball. (you may have to add a little
more corn meal). Do not have oil so hot that they
brown too quickly as the inside will not have
cooked evenly.
These are great as an hors-d’oeuvre or an accom-
paniment with anything, beans, ham, chili, gumbo,
etc.
OATMEAL COOKIES (Submitted by Joan Brown)
3 C. oatmeal
1 C. brown sugar
1 C. white sugar
1 C. butter or shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 C. flour
1 tsp. each salt, baking soda, baking powder
1-1/2 C. chocolate chips
Directions: Cream sugars, butter and eggs.
Add vanilla, flour, salt, baking soda and bak-
ing powder. Add oatmeal and chocolate chips.
Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.
