Scott County, Indiana Veteran’s Biographical Book N ow’s your chance to make history! A Military pictorial history book documenting the veterans of Scott County, Indiana is now being published. The Scott County Community Foundation has teamed up with M.T. Publishing Company to produce the Scott County Veteran’s Biographical history book. As a nonprofit organization, our purpose in publishing a veterans history is to preserve our county history for the enjoyment and education of future generations. There is no better time than now to ensure that our military history is not lost or forgotten over time. However, we need your help in making this publication a complete and accurate historical record. Your military photographs and information are needed for inclusion in the Scott County Veteran’s Biographical history book. You may send original photographs or make a professional, high resolution reproduction of your irreplaceable photographs (no photo copies). Be assured that your photos will be handled with care and returned to you upon completion of the book. All photographs will be reviewed for content and clarity and selected by the editor for inclusion in the publication. On the back of each photograph, please include your name, address and, if possible, a caption with the date the photo was taken. Please restrict your biography entries to your own family members or someone you have a connection with. This 8 1/2" x 11" hardbound edition will contain photographs, historical highlights, and a custom designed leatherette cover. The number of pages the book will contain depends on the number of book orders and veteran biographies received-so we need your support! Because there will only be a limited number of copies printed, it is necessary to collect book orders in advance. All revenue will be held in escrow at a local bank for payment to the publisher at a later date. Your Photos Are Needed! An Invitation to Be a Part of Our History Book

Contributing local business and organization sponsors are necessary to help raise additional money for the book project. Donations are priced at $150 for the Patron level, which includes one complimentary book, $500 for the Bronze Star level, which includes two complimentary books, and $750 for the Silver Star level, which includes three complimentary copies of the Scott County Veteran’s Biographical History Book. These con-tributions will insure that all veteran bios will be documented.

The Scott County Community Foundation is in need of your help. Historical and recent photos of the county’s veterans are needed for this special history book. All photographs will be reviewed for content and clarity and carefully selected for inclusion in the publication. Please submit original photographs or a professional high resolution reproduction (no photocopies or ink jet printer copies) no larger than 8" x 10". If submitting electronically, please only submit images that are 300 dpi or higher and saved as .jpg or .tif files. We can-not accept images that are embedded within Micro-soft Word documents. Please also be sure to include captions for these images. Include military veterans, whether in battles or active duty. Be sure to include a caption with the date and place the photo was taken and who or what is depicted. If you wish to have these images returned, please include your name, return ad-dress and a self-addressed stamped envelope and the photos will be returned upon completion of the book. For the assistance of future genealogists and historians, it is helpful to include such information as date of birth, dates of service, military units attached to, campaigns participated in, base or camps stationed at, occupation after military service and if killed, date of death. Include schools attended and public, civic and business positions. Feel free to include other information or special family stories that help tell others about the person you are writing about.

Things to RememberSubmit your biography in third person (he, she, they) in typed, double-spaced form on plain paper and include your veteran biography name title on all pages.

• It is FREE to submit your 150 word or less veteran biography and one photo.

• Send either original photos or professional high-resolution reproductions (xerox or ink jet printer copies cannot be reproduced for inclusion in the Scott County Veteran’s Biographical History Book).

• Please submit photos no larger than 8" x 10" with your name, address and a caption with the date printed clearly on the back of the photo. An address label works well. Please identify person or persons in photo.

• If you wish to have these images returned, please include a self addressed, stamped envelope of the appropriate size for returning your photograph and they will be returned upon completion of the book.

ROBERT COMERRobert G. Comer was born in

Scott County on October 14, 1930, the youngest of 10 children. He graduated from Scottsburg High School in 1950. He was ordered to report for his physi-

cal exam for the U.S. Army on April 30, 1953. He left Scottsburg for the Army on September 17, 1953. He completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, armored amphibian training at Camp Pendleton, California, in February 1954.

Use the following biographies as examples when writing your veteran’s biography.

Robert Comer

JEREMY W. TOPPEJeremy W. Toppe joined the In-

diana Army National Guard on July 14, 1997. He graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, South Ca-rolina, and AIT from Aberdeen Pro-ving Ground, Maryland, with trai-ning as a tracked vehicle mechanic.

He has been assigned to various companies in the 76th Infantry Briga-de and later re-qualified as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. He deployed to Af-ghanistan and Iraq for Operation Endu-ring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He rose to the rank of Ser-geant First Class before completing Warrant Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a warrant officer.

He has received numerous medals, including the Bronze Star, Army Com-

mendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expediti-onary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Me-dal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, among others.

He is employed as a civil service technician for the Military Department

of Indiana, where he serves as Surface Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor. He currently serves with Delta Com-pany 113th BSB (FSC) in Scottsburg.

Jeremy is married to Jaime, and they have two sons, Lucas and Landon.

On April 1, 1954, he was sent to Korea. He served on the North Korea/South Korea front lines. During the last of his service he took postal training and was the postal clerk.

He was discharged in June 1955. He received the National Defense Service Medal, U.S. Service Medal, and Korean Service Ribbon.

Robert married Ruth Ann Bartle and together they raised two children. He was born, lived and died on the family farm. He passed away November 10, 2010.
