State 4-H Leaders' Forum - November 9-11, 2012 at Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove

Have you ever attended the State 4-H Leaders’ Forum (SLF) over Veteran’s Day weekend? It’s a weekend for adult 4-H volunteers and a great way to meet other 4-H volunteers. Sign up for the sessions of your choice, hear some great speakers, and enjoy hanging by the beach at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, near Monterey Bay. It doesn’t get any better than this! For more information, go to: http://www.ca4h.org/Programs/Conferences/SLF/ Donations Needed to Support State 4-H Leaders’ Forum Each year a Silent Auction is held at the State 4-H Leaders’ Forum (SLF) to help cover the costs of the conference. The auction items vary from DVDs to Car Cleaning Kits to Coffee Baskets and Sewing Baskets, and are all donated by 4-H members from each county. What might you be able to donate? Do you have any items you’ve been gifted that “just aren’t you”? Or items you’ve picked up because “it was such a great deal” but now have no use for them? Or do you have a business and can donate an item? Last year a simple gifted necklace was donated that was just not the owner’s style, and it raised $19.00! Donations are needed by November 1 and are tax deductible as allowed by law. Deliver items to your Community Club Leader to take to the next meeting or drop them off at the Tulare County 4-H Office.

NATIONAL 4-H WEEK OCTOBER 7-13, 2012

National 4-H Week provides an excellent opportunity to promote 4-H, and increase the visibility of the program and your club. There is plenty of time to include this in your club’s activity planners for the year. One idea is for clubs to do a window display. Does your club participate in the National 4-H Week Window Display Contest? Good locations for displays are store windows, school display cases, county buildings, banks, and libraries. The 2012 National 4-H Week promotional theme is “Join the Revolution of Responsibility”. You may use your own theme designed to encourage 4-H participation. Offer to help your club leader put together a display to show everyone what 4-H is all about. Other ideas you and your club can do in preparation for “National 4-H Week.”

1. Get your local newspaper to highlight a special project/event your club participates in or a leader from your club who has been involved in the program for many years.

2. Set up an information table at your school’s open house.

3. Send out fliers to schools in your area inviting new people to your next meeting.

4. Plan a special event. Please get your club involved in spreading the word about 4-H! Join in and celebrate “National 4-H Week. Visit the following website for more information and promotional toolkits: http://www.4-h.org/resource-library/promotional-toolkits

Announcing the New Highest California 4-H Youth Award! The Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the launch of the California 4-H Diamond Clover Award. The Diamond Clover is awarded to the highest achieving 4-H youth members through an application and essay process. All youth who achieve the qualifications are eligible for this award. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year and while a young person is between 17 and 19 years of age. Each quarter, applications are reviewed by the Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee and awards are given. Awardees are announced annually at the State Leadership Conference. Applications are available now for submission beginning July 1, 2012 at: http://www.ca4h.org/Administration/Advisory_Committees/IR/ Rationale: Most youth serving organizations have a highest honor—Boy Scouts have Eagle Scouts, Girl Scouts have the Gold Award, Camp Fire USA has the WoHeLo Award. While the 4-H State Ambassador Program is a very high honor, it is a working honor and is prohibitive to many who may be deserving of a highest youth award. State Record Book Judging An Addendum to the Record Book Manual with updated 2012 Cover Page, Judge’s Application, County Check Sheet and State Judging Process Overview will be posted to the State Website in mid-July. Members planning to submit a Record Book for State Competition should check the Website after July 15th for the most current information on procedures, requirements and due dates. CALIFORNIA 4-H FOUNDATION REVOLUTION OF RESPONSIBILITY

CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN

The Revolution of Responsibility 2013 marks the centennial for 4‐H in California, an important milestone for an organization that is deeply connected to communities throughout California. Core to the 4‐H experience is service learning, which takes the form of student‐designed, student‐led projects where participants learn leadership by leading, collaboration through collaborating, and the importance of civic engagement by actively-seeking opportunities to make a difference in their communities. The Revolution of Responsibility will celebrate the power of youth taking action and will be the centerpiece of the Centennial Celebration with two key components: 1) an ambitious statewide service learning program, $1,000 for 1,000, raising funds to provide $1,000 each for 1,000 4‐H service learning projects statewide, and 2) the development of an Alumni Membership program connecting with an estimated one million past 4‐H participants living in California, engaging them as volunteers, donors, and advocates and building our capacity to sustain the organization statewide. The Revolution of Responsibility Program will have the potential to touch the lives of the more than 38,000 youth and 20,000 volunteers currently active in 4‐H clubs in 57 California counties. Under the guidance and mentorship of their adult leaders, 4‐H youth will identify a need in their community, develop a plan to address that need, find community partners who will support their work, and carry out their plan to achieve success. 4‐H staff will support volunteers with the resources necessary to implement their projects, encouraging them to broaden their impact through the cultivation of partnerships with 4‐H alumni, local businesses, and community organizations in support of their work. Projects will be implemented with a focus on three national program initiatives: Healthy Living, Science, and Citizenship. These programs are central to the health and vibrancy of our communities and provide 4‐H members with opportunities to lead the charge in addressing critical issues facing Californians today. The Revolution of Responsibility program will include a robust web presence through the development of an interactive website and the implementation of a social media strategy that will draw attention to the 1,000 civic engagement projects and the stories that emerge from youth, volunteers and alumni. All 1,000 projects will be documented by the youth participants through photographs and YouTube style videos and will be posted on a new website as they are completed. This will provide enhanced visibility for California 4‐H, highlighting the 100 years of experience, expertise and research that place 4‐H at the forefront of youth programming. The program will also underscore the value of 4‐H in the lives of current and past participants. We will work with

photographer Christopher Irion to present the “Faces of 4‐H,” capturing the diverse images and unique stories of our 4‐H community for inclusion on our website and related publications. Photographs will be taken at the California State Fair using Irion’s unique “photo booth” approach. This exciting component of the Revolution of Responsibility will also be featured on a grand scale in a temporary mural installation planned for the State Capitol grounds in Sacramento as a culmination and centerpiece of our Centennial Celebration festivities. TIMELINE Fall 2012: Project funding continues. Winter 2013: Formal Alumni Program launched. Spring 2013: Centennial Celebration activities begin. $2 million fundraising goal achieved. Spring 2014: Completion of all projects with culminating Centennial Celebration Event.
