WHAT’S INSIDE:
Information for New 4-H Members New members have until May 15, 2017 to join Scott County 4-H. If the new member wants to show livestock
at the Mississippi Valley Fair they will need to enroll earlier so they can I.D. their animals by the May 15 deadline. Remember that some livestock weigh-ins are before May. If a member has not enrolled but
attended a weigh-in, they will not be able to I.D. those animals until they are enrolled.
How do I enter my animal/livestock identification online?
You can view instructions at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/scott/sites/www.extension.iastate.edu/files/scott/LivestockEntryForFamilies.pdf This will be done through 4hOnline only. No hard copies will be accepted. The deadline for entering information online will be May 15th by 11:59 p.m. The system will lock at midnight. All animals except poultry, rabbits, and first year bucket calves MUST be identified to be eligible to show at county and/or State Fair. The purpose of identifying animals is to list the animals and pertinent information that you might take to the fair.

MEET YOUR COUNTY COUNCIL
The Scott County Council consists of twelve 4-H members that serve in an advisory capacity. The council is planning
to organize into teams and meet with the clubs to give them advice and guidance on projects and activities. They
serve as mentors and promote the 4-H values and beliefs. They also plan and chair group meetings such as Fun
Night where they practice their leadership skills. This is the second month that we have featured council members
and told you a little about their career goals, favorite classes and teachers, and other interesting comments.
Drake Gollinghorst
Annie Hollonbeck
Ethan Hornbuckle
Drake plans to exhibit his beef cattle at the fair this summer. He is the club presi-
dent for the Sheridan Sluggers and has been in 4-H for 8 years. Other outside in-
terest include wrestling and playing football. Drake has good memories of making
new friends by showing livestock at the fair. After high school he plans to attend
Iowa State for a degree (has not decided on a major). Drake has been involved in
the County Council for three years and would like to see the council become more
involved with fair exhibits. His favorite class is gym, favorite teacher is Mr. Kelly
(gym teacher) favorite food is a cheeseburger basket and his parents and grandpar-
ents are his idols. His dream car is a Buick LeSabre and his dream vacation would
be a fishing trip in Canada.
Favorite Quote: “You can accomplish more with your brain than by using your
back”
Annie has been in 4-H for 6 years and is club president for the Bluegrass Sr. Sun-
shine Workers. She participates in sewing, visual arts and horticulture. Outside of
4-H Annie enjoys ice skating, reading and the piano. Her favorite 4-H memory was
in the 4th grade when she won the Grand Champion competition. It was a huge
surprise for her. Annie wants to raise awareness in the community about 4-H.
She would like to see the council host a food drive and visit the Scott County Clubs.
Annie plans to attend college and become a marine biologist. Her dream vacation
would be on a tropical beach. On a rainy day you would find Annie inside reading a
book. All of her teachers are her favorite and her dream car is one that runs.
Ethan attends Pleasant Valley High School and has been in 4-H for 8 years. After
graduation he plans to attend Iowa State for a degree in animal science and then
study to become a veterinarian . Ethan enjoys working with cattle and his best
4-H memory is raising and showing his bucket calf named Pepper. She fainted
during the open show and he pushed her to stand up and she finished the show.
Ethan also enjoys rabbits, entomology, photography, shooting sports and volun-
teer work. His dream vacation would be a trip to Washington D.C. to visit the
monuments and historic sites. His favorite Class is Anatomy and favorite teacher
is Mr. Parker. On a rainy day, you will find Ethan hanging out with his family.
Favorite Quote: “Life is too short so eat dessert first”

New Class at the Fair!
The Heart of 4-H—County Only— Show something you did that shows kindness in your life. What project did
you do for others? Did you help a neighbor or relative when they needed assistance? Did you make something
for someone or take them something they needed? Did you find a way to show kindness to others? Look on
Pinterest for some ideas. (Make sure you document where you got the idea.) The purpose of this class is to
spread kindness and think of ways you can do this. Champions in each age division will receive $100 to donate
to a charity of their choice, compliments of Madden Ag Services, Long Grove.
Dog Obedience Classes Set
Training classes for Dog obedience started on April 26th at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds
but youth interested in showing dogs at the fair are welcome to attend. To show dogs, you
MUST meet the May 15th deadline for animal identification in 4hOnline. Classes will
continue throughout the summer. The registration fee is $10.00. Those signed up for Dog
project should have gotten a letter in the mail with the times and dates that obedience classes start. If you did
not receive a letter and are interested in the classes please call the Extension Office and request a schedule and
instructions on how to get on the mailing list.
Queen Contest Returns to Mississippi Valley Fair
The Mississippi Valley Fair Board of Directors announced that a fair queen will reign over
the 2017 fair scheduled for August 1—6th at the fairgrounds. A $500 scholarship will go to

port. Application deadline is June 1st and the actual contest is Thursday June 15th.

the health of your horse and all shots will be brought up to date. Also your paper work for the fair will
be completed.
The Iowa 4-H Livestock Show Requirements (4H202) has been recently updated. This publication
provides information on animal identification, weighing, and exhibit requirements for County, State and
Interstate Shows. One of the changes made is that horse and dog project animals can be identified
by more than one 4-H member provided the members are all 4-H members and are siblings. Sib-
ling definition includes brother, sister or step-siblings with one common parent/guardian. The same
animal(s) cannot be identified by one sibling in 4-H and another sibling in FFA. The publication is
available to view on-line at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4hfiles/
agriculture/4H202Update2017.pdf .
Share the Fun will again be judged at the extension office this year. The date
will be July 25th at 1:00 pm. Think about what your club could do for entertainment:.
Some ideas are: perform a skit, play an instrument or band number, sing, dance,
magic act.
Be creative and Share the Fun! You can do an individual act or perform as a group.
We have had a variety of talents in the past so entertain however you want and SHARE THE FUN!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ETHAN HORNBUCKLE
The 4-H Youth Conference has a special program called Animal Science 4H Roundup.
Applicants can be included in small groups (less than 20 each) to learn more in the areas
of beef, swine, poultry, sheep and dairy cattle. Ethan submitted an essay limited to 250
words (if you know Ethan, he had a few thousand words to say so this was a challenge
for him). Ethan plans to pursue a career in Vet Medicine specializing in large animals.
The Cattlemen’s Association has pledged to sponsor Ethan at the Youth Conference from
June 27—29 in Ames, Iowa.
Ethan Hornbuckle
Look for details from the Scott County 4-H attendees at the Youth Conference to be included in the
August issue of the Scott Scoop. And we will be sure to shorten Ethan’s comments to a single page.
Scott County Extension is a Weather Ready Nation Ambassador. We will share some information to
help you learn what to do in the case of severe weather. Here are some tips:
Find out what you can do when severe weather strikes. Acting quickly is key to staying safe and minimizing impacts.
Stay Weather Ready: Continue to listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay updated about severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.
At Your House: Go to your secure location if you hear a severe thunderstorm warning. Damaging wind or large hail may be approaching. Take your pets with you if time allows.
At Your Workplace or School: Stay away from windows if you are in a severe thunderstorm warning and damaging wind or large hail is approaching. Do not go to large open rooms such as cafeterias, gym-nasiums or auditoriums.
Outside: Go inside a sturdy building immediately if severe thunderstorms are approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are not safe. Taking shelter under a tree can be deadly. The tree may fall on you. Standing under a tree also put you at a greater risk of getting struck by lightning.
In a Vehicle: Being in a vehicle during severe thunderstorms is safer than being outside; however, drive
to closest secure shelter if there is sufficient time.
