Screen Training Ireland (STI) is the national screen training and development body, tailored for Ireland’s film and television industry. It was established in 1995 to provide ongoing training and career-development opportunities for professionals working in the screen industry. STI works with recognised industry professionals, both locally and internationally, to identify, design and deliver training for Irish professionals. Training programmes are offered to practitioners and companies to enhance their expertise in film, television, animation and interactive screen content. STI comes under the auspices of the Irish Film Board (IFB) since 2013. It is mainly funded by the IFB, third-party training partnerships and fee income. STI offers training for the changing needs of the Irish screen industry. STI developed and delivered over 47 courses in 2017 and allocated 1,115 places to participants. Of these training places 48% were allocated to female participants and 52% allocated to male participants.

We also supported 23 masterclasses and workshops at leading Irish Film festivals, and seminars in partnership with various organisations throughout the year. Approximately 1,558 places were provided at these events in Dublin and throughout the country, of these 39% were allocated to female participants and 61% allocated to male participants. STI categorises skills needs in three core areas; creativity and creative collaboration (CCC), production and technical skills (P&T) and business and enterprise (B&E). STI also supports high-level international training opportunities through the Bursary Award scheme and through its support of programmes such as Guiding Lights, Inside Pictures, EAVE and ACE. Through the Bursary Award Scheme, 25 Irish industry professionals availed of funding to attend high-level training programmes and workshops with international companies and organisations.

In live-action production, STI focused on work-based learning. The Red Rock Production Training Scheme - delivered for a second time - offered emerging talent in the industry the opportunity to work on season three of the popular TV show. Work-based learning and mentoring were provided in the areas of art department, costume, assistant directing, props, social media and post-production.

With the development of Troy Studios in Limerick and GeorgeR.R. Martin’s Nightflyers Sci-Fi series set to shoot in 2018, live-action production training focused on addressing skills needs in the Limerick and Clare region. Courses in drafting for film and TV, an Introduction to the Film Production Office, a Production Assistant Bootcamp, and a Set Build for Film course were delivered.

In other regional production training, Screen Training Ireland partnered with the Galway Film Centre and Gréasán na Mean Skillnet to deliver a Script Supervision course, followed by continuity placements on drama productions for some participants.

Craft/design training in Dublin included an intensive Period Hair and Make-Up workshop with Lorraine Glynn and Sonia Dolan.

STI focused on work-based learning in the digital production area through the VFX and Animation Graduate Traineeship programme. A collaboration with Animation Skillnet, the programme is in its third edition, with companies such as Brown Bag Films, Cartoon Saloon and Screen Scene VFX continuing to host participants in their studios.  A two-day symposium offered creative insights from an array of international talent. This year’s programme of training for the Graduate Traineeship included Colour Theory, Rigging in Toon Boom Harmony, Lighting, and ZBrush.

Taking part in the Graduate Traineeship programme allowed me to work in-house in a fast-paced, exciting studio, experiencing everything this opportunity afforded me whilst learning on the job in a friendly and encouraging environment. Jessica Patterson, trainee 2017, Jam Media, 2017 programme.

The Graduate Traineeship Programme is an invaluable resource for those who have just completed 3rd level. Through this programme I have landed a pivotal-entry level job that has opened up many avenues for me. I am learning hands-on skills, while being mentored by some of the best in Ireland. Daniel McGuire, trainee, Screen Scene VFX, 2017/18 programme.

23 Training Highlights 2017

Page 26: Screen Training Ireland –A Year in Review 2017...pioneer (Sleepy Hollow VR experience) and creator and conceptual lead of Halcyon, discussed narrative and storytelling structures

There was a strong focus on software development and drafting skills with courses in Rhino, Vectorworks 2D and 3D and SketchUp delivered and participants’ skill levels advancing and applied directly on the job.

I have taken what I learnt on the STI Vectorworks courses and applied it directly on INTO THE BADLANDS season 3.  The flexibility of Vectorworks software allows me to design at speed in 3D and 2D to create quick compelling visuals for the production designer, directors, DOPs and construction. Gary McGinty, art director, Into The Badlands, Season 3.

Robert Barrett, a participant on the intermediate drafting course, is currently applying his skills in the art department of INTO THE BADLANDS drafting for Rhino.

In 2017 I completed four courses with Screen Training Ireland including Drafting and Rhino for the Art Department, and Health and Safety for TV and Film. These courses have been an enormous help in obtaining a position in the field and being able to hit the ground running . Within the art department there are certain methods and procedures for how drawings are done. I became familiar with a number of these methods which meant that when I started my first job as a trainee,

I was able to adapt to the role much quicker than before. I completed two courses in Rhino, one before I started in my current position and one after I’d been there several weeks. By completing the course before I started, I was able to learn the basics. The second course was to address any problems I had come across in work and because I was more familiar with the software I was able to learn more advanced tools. These have been invaluable as the work has become more complex over time. Robert Barrett, art department trainee.

A Train the Trainer initiative, targeted at enhancing the skills of educators and trainers for VFX and animation, kicked off with an After Effects course tutored by digital artist Mario Bortas.

VR Storytelling in association with Animation Skillnet and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) saw Colum Slevin, Oculus VR deliver a session on storytelling for 360 video, and real-time experiences for Mobile VR and Rift.

Bursary Review 2017

The Hyper Realistic Skin Painting for Prosthetics and Props course in Titanic Creative Belfast was an amazing, informative and enjoyable experience. Richard is an incredibly skilled artist and was very thorough in his demonstration of silicone painting, which is in itself a notoriously difficult discipline. The skills obtained over the two days were not limited to painting but can be applied to many aspects of prosthetics and prop making including sculpting, mould making and makeup application. Thanks very much to all at Screen Training Ireland for their support. Bobby McGlynn, prosthetics make-up artist, prop maker.

In 2017, bursaries were awarded to 25 applicants across the fields of creativity and creative collaboration, production and technical and business & enterprise. Over €45,000 was allocated to Irish industry practitioners to participate in international training programmes, enhancing their career prospects.

Looking Ahead: 2018 and beyond

In 2017 the IFB and the BAI published the AV Skills Strategy report and in 2018 STI will undertake a review of the report and seek to implement the major recommendations. This will include:

1 An advisory Board for STI2 The appointment of a Training Manager3 Engagement with the sector with regard

to the recommendations4 A skills-gap audit across live-action,

animation and television production sectors5 Consideration of accreditation models

In 2017, very good advances were made in developing apprenticeships, however, we recognise the scale of the work that still needs to be done in developing more work-based learning opportunities. Many challenges still exist: diversity, inclusion, paths for new entrants and the ongoing issue of bridging the gap between third level and industry. We also recognise that we need more hard data in terms of measuring the workforce. Therefore in 2018 we will:

Page 50: Screen Training Ireland –A Year in Review 2017...pioneer (Sleepy Hollow VR experience) and creator and conceptual lead of Halcyon, discussed narrative and storytelling structures

1 Roll out an extensive careers portal in live action, animation, VFX and television production which will map the careers in these areas

2 Establish an industry/education forum3 Carry out detailed research on the scale

and breakdown of the workforce4 Develop more traineeships in partnership

with Solas and the local Education and Training Board

5 Develop a Trainee Toolkit6 Work closely with industry on partnership

initiatives, especially around animation7 Increase mentoring especially for female

talent
