NN, BBC, CBC, GNN, FOXAl-Jazeera, some guy’s cousinin Baghdad... What’s yournews source? The recentwar in Iraq may be one of themost heavily covered mediaevents ever. At any point intime no less than six chan-nels had 24 hour non stopcoverage of the currentconditions. Webcasts couldbe obtained of the news

coverage of many coun-tries. And for the first time inthe history of warfare,“embedded” reporters trav-eled within certain militaryoutfits sending live videostreams to the rest of theworld. To the credit of theUS, they allowed reportersof many different nationali-ties to become “embed-ded”, although the US

anti-american?>hat does it mean to think you’reanti-american but love going tonew york city regularily to visit?new york has always been a huge lure as i consider myself atrue urbanite, and what betterplace to go?

i’m better understanding my anti-american thoughts throughmy travels to new york. the thingsI love about this city are differentfrom the things I don’t like aboutthe present american government.

the present american govern-ment makes me so angry andfrustrated with their foreign policy and how they can create awar with it.

I used to think that the big apple

was the symbol of everythingamerica stood for, but I’m not sosure anymore. the people of newyork have had their city made intoa political playground over politicalmeans, and this has cost the cityspeople much grief.

i’m trying to become moreinformed about my anti-americanthoughts. they’ve become focusedon the present u.s. administrationand the actions they’ve choosento take.

this is how I’m feeling about thestates now, and these things canalways change, hopefully for thebetter. It’s amazing to note how alot of Americans share the sameview.

censers had the final say onwhat video was allowed tobe broadcast, for securityreasons only, of course.

So much video footagewas being obtained thatanalysts and historians willbe able to create a veryaccurate account of thechronology and locations of allmajor events.

Perhaps it is the unprece-dented media access that sogreatly differentiations thiscurrent conflict from the firstGulf War. Even before the firstcivilian was dismembered theinternet lit up with activity.

Activists put up web pagesto organize rallies, e-mailcampaigns expressing dissentto elected officials went out,and on-line forums werealive with discussions of themorality of invasion.

But people still continuewatching CNN. Despite the smorgasbord of mediachoices, CNN and FOXremain the primary sourcesof information for the NorthAmerican public.

I believe news consumptionshould be somewhat likeeating. Vary your sources anddon’t binge on CNN.

of the areas problems; thesale and acquisition of thenext hit and the predatoryrelationship of the addict andthe dealer. Many of the neg-ative associations with harddrug use ae linked to theresulting increase in property

crime, prostitution andcareer criminals. All of theseassociations exist becauseof the potential for profit. It istime for the medical and judi-cial systems to recognize harddrug usage as an illness andthat some addicts are incur-

able. By providing heroin andcrack cocaine of consistentquality under controlled con-ditions to long term addicts, both the addicts and the pub-lic would benefit. Fewer girlsselling sex to feed habits, less people profiting from sell-ing hard drugs and a reduc-tion in petty property crimecould all be realized, withminimal costs to the system. The major obstacle at thispoint is convincing the publicthat distributing hard drugs toindividuals medically requiringthem is a conscientious act.

What is currently unbear-able is a street not that farfrom where I live called EastHastings. If you are not famil-iar with the neighborhood Iencourage you to walk alonga few alleyways with a smallgroup to observe the scene.I’m not suggesting povertytourism or charity visits – just observe. Obviously ourcurrent drug policy is notworking. It is time for us toexplore new approachesbased in reality, not perceivedmorality.

happened to the East sideof Vancouver? I’ve only beena resident of Vancouver forthe last three years, so itscurrent state is all I haveknown. However, whenwalking along the edges ofGastown towards theStrathcona neighbourhood,there are hints of moreprosperous times throughoutthe carnage on the streets.The causative agents for thecurrent situation are plenty;

poverty, mental illness, alco-holism and drug abuse, theft, prostitution. With a list ofproblems as substantial asthis, it is all too clear that nosimple cure to the problemexists, and that the currentapproach is ineffectual at best.

The police have beenmaintaining a continuouspresence at the corner ofMain and Hastings for manymonths now. This hasresulted in a sharp decreasein drug sales and usage in thesidewalk area surrounding thecruiser, but has only slightlydisplaced the ongoing activitiesa single city block.

Another tool to help minimizethe harm that addicts do tosociety being enacted by thecity is the safer injection sites.Despite considerable oppo-sition by the community, alocation has been completedin the 100 block of Hastingsand is awaiting licensure andfunding. This is a progressiveapproach to reducing healthproblems stemming fromshared and dirty needles. Itmay also prevent overdosedeaths and provide a contactpoint for addicts desiring entryinto rehabilitation programs.

nfortunately, none ofthese approachesremedy the primacy

music relations: a video rental:vinyl:now here’s a movie about serious collectors, and the baggage they carry with collecting. themovie documents numerous people who collectvinyl in north america. every genre of music isrepresented. for some of these people, the musichas nothing to do with it, its just for the sake ofcollecting. i collect vinyl, but i’m not a serious col-lector by any means. for me its about the music.this isn’t the case for everybody who collects vinylas we find out. this movie explores not only peoplescollections but the motives or justifications behindthem. it’s the type of movie i would recommend tofriends who would appreciate music collecting.

accordance with a drunkenpromise to myself to hit upmore live music venues, michael and i stumbled into303 live (303 columbia st.)for the first show of weekseven of livewirepalooza. It is a poorly advertised butenergetic event featuringfour bands doing 35 minuteshotgun sets per night.

> over the first eight weeksthe 106 bands go through a“suck minification” processand suddenly down to justeight bands. The secondround will determine thefinal winner. > The opening band mastersof the universe had theshitty task of getting themeager crowd woken up.

Between the feral growling ofthe singer and the epilepticon amphetamines guitar play-ing of clayton, these guysrocked out. when noizetribe zero came out for thesecond set we were neutrallyoptimistic. The groupies andsignage were true warningsthough. they played as thougheach member was alone onstage. lunch bucket followed, with some comical merit, butminimal musical skills. I’m notsure if it was nerves or what, but the sweat was pouringright of these guys, but theywere just standing there;strange plumbing indeed.> we were treated to the neo-punk stylings of infernalmajesty for the closing act.Although they didn’t walk awaythe winners, these guys hadfists pumping into the air match-ing their pounding rhythm.

i suppose it was apathy and my fear of change that resulted in my usage of Zig-Zag White rolling papers for my marijuanaconsumption needs. I knew that other brands existed, but I wasSOLD by that smoking monk and the snooty french writing.

i decided to approach the experts down at Blunt Bros. to get the full scoop. clorice informed me that my trusty Zigs actuallycontain animal fats in the glue and contain harmful bleachedwood-based papers. the staff there tends to use the blacklabeled Deluxe Smoking Extra Thin Rice Papers. they are slowburning and very light. i personally found the pure hemp papersto burn the best, although both Skunk and Smoking brand hemppapers did a good job of holding the product together. must domore testing though, just to be sure

seven best toking spotsof vancouver…

ow let it be said that this listmay be more than just a little

subjective. i may have alsodiscovered better spots than

these…. but was likely too friedto recall where I was at.

1> lynn valley suspensionbridge: sitting, standing or madlyclinging to it. looking down fromthere with a good buzz going

on inspires a multitude ofthoughts. this is good as long

as one of them isn’t DROPTHE BABY

4> vancouver art gallery:south steps. it’s clichéd, dirty and just so fucking

classic. interesting views and more insightful con-versation than one wouldimagine. try it sometime

(but watch out for bob the rent-a-cop – he’ll tell you to take your

drug elsewhere)

2> english bay: during those ridiculously busy

fireworks. have a few tokes while trying to

ignore the annoying banter ofthe mc, and then fall into theclouds, as fireworks dance

before your eyes.

6> coal harbour: walkingamongst the towering glass

buildings and extravagantyachts allows the stoner tofeel metropolitan and glitzy

despite the fleece and mec handbag.

5> davie street: this stripplays host to the most diverse

crowd anywhere. there’sleather daddies with their

micro-dogs, but watch you’restep. if you stepped on thedog you’d be like stepping

on a bug or something.squish.

3> harwood st.: outside mylandlord’s apartment

bedroom window. why? because i’m an ass.

7> waiting in line for a giganticmeal at stepho’s. it makes thetime pass on by and gives usmere mortals the appetite of

a god, allowing complete consumption of an enormous

soulvlaki platter.

> it was a great summerafternoon when a friend andi went for a toke session inthe downtown eastside, strictlyfor observation of course. wemade our way down hastingsand hung out in oppenheimer.following this, we returned tothe west end to chill at myplace. as the puffs persisted, the music turned darker. skinnypuppy was on the stereo andi was up grabbing two of myrepent sinner strip stickersand placing them in a crossin the middle of my windowto form an ominous redsymbol for all to see.

> after repeating this ritual onseveral occasions I noticedthat in the building across thestreet someone was alsoputting up a red cross tocoincide with when mine wasup. to find out more, i put upmy cross again and watchedthe third balcony from thebottom. up went his. huh? iscribbled my phone # on a bigpiece of paper on threw it inthe window. ring. hello? hey,the name's peter. . . as a resultof the cross, we've sharedmany tokes drinks and stories.I wonder if this is part of repentssinners' original plan?

> another trip down to the eastside producedanother find. it looks the same, written the

same and even has the same initials: r.s. the words: riot sooner.

> is this the same person as repent sinner? thehandwriting isn’t the same. the idea is the

same. first i thought it was the mind trip i wason, but no. so here you can see it. very similar

though. what a jump. from simple repenting to strenous rioting, sheesh.

> last fall as i was skytraining it to work alongterminal, i passed a billboard stating:repent

shopper.an adbuster project using the samestyle as the original.again, flipping through vice,

the rip-offs:

> repent shopper> repent reader> repent peter> repent michael> repent wee-wee

> i moved to vancouver dur-ing the month of july in theyear 1992 to attend schoolat emily carr institute of art +design. i was 19 years oldand this was my first moveaway from home. i'm fromedmonton, so there was aslight culture shock arrivingin a larger city on the ocean.> when school started and ibegan meeting people, islowly discovered my wayaround this city and made afew discoveries. A recurringimage that has made a last-ing impression on me is theinfamous repent sinnerstickers i would find ondowntown dumpsters, build-

ings and streets.> as i ventured east, repentsinner had a more visiblepresence. i guess you couldsay repent sinner introducedme to the eastside. manypeople I meet recognize the handwritten words, theconsistent message, andacknowledge a sense oreeriness in handling theirrepent sinner objects, know-ing that the surface has seenfanatical hands. my first repentsinner to call my own nowlives on the cover of myturn-table. it's black ink on ared strip of red sticky plasticwith a hyphen between thetwo words.
