Welcome to Potatoes in Practice 2008

SCRI, SAC, CSC PotatoCare and the Potato Council welcome you to Potatoes in Practice 2008. This event is now the largest annual potato knowledge transfer event in Britain, attracting more international visitors each year. We specially welcome the Chinese members of the delegation visiting the UK as part of the UK-China Development Dialogue 2008. The event is supported again this year by Potato Review.

This is a unique opportunity for farmers, advisers and others to view the government and industry-supported research and new developments at a single site. Specialists from all sectors will be on hand to discuss all your questions on the latest trials and research.

There will be a host of industry leading companies with demonstrations in the commercial section of the trials fi eld and with exhibits in the event marquee. There will also be a series of technical seminars open to all attendees complementing the fi eld based research demonstrations.

Please note that many of the demonstrations and plots on show today are research in progress. For those trials that can be followed through, the results will be collated and analysed post-harvest. These results will be made available on the SCRI website www.scri.ac.uk under Potatoes in Practice, or via the Potato Council website, www.potato.org.uk

‘Carbon footprinting of crop production’Jonathan Hillier (1), Alex Hilton, Cathy Hawes (3), Pete Smith (1), Stuart Wale (2).

Concerns over climate change have recently inspired quantifi cation of the Carbon footprint of many anthropological activities. For food and energy crops full accounting of the C footprint has thus far been constrained by a lack of knowledge about the “to farm-gate” C costs of crop production.

We present the results of a recent study which uses standard, globally accepted values for emissions, and “typical” management regimes to establish the Carbon footprints of a range of commonly grown UK crops. Potato, due to it intensive management requirements, has a naturally higher C footprint in comparison with other common crops, although the difference is not as large as might perhaps be expected. In general, a very signifi cant part of the C footprint comes from N-fertiliser additions, due both to the costs of production and the nitrous oxide emissions resulting from application.

The output of the study is suitable for incorporation into fuller Life Cycle Analyses which consider in addition the costs of, for example, transportation, storage, and packaging.

In itself, it is an important fi rst step, which allows us to consider fi rstly the relative contributions of components of crop management to the C footprint, and then, how and to what extent we may reduce it.

Potatoes – A choice for lifeKathryn Race, Marketing Director, Potato Council

The better we understand consumers, the more effective our strategies will be.

At each stage in our lives, subtle changes happen that affect the way we live and infl uence our choice of food and understanding those shifts in lifestyle as those stages develop will better shape our marketing strategies and programmes.

The encouraging thing is the way in which the industry itself has responded to the shifts and developments which our research has identifi ed. Meeting consumer demand for greater convenience, for example, has seen the development of smaller pack sizes – more in line with the way consumers shop with a specifi c meal in mind.

Not only are smaller pack sizes emerging, the packaging itself is much more exciting – informing and enticing consumers in a way previously only associated with branded products. Signifi cant health messages, innovative recipe and serving suggestions, varietal information – have all contributed to a more dynamic feel in the category.

Consumer marketing campaigns built on sound understanding and robust analysis of available research is having a positive effect; greater product differentiation, whether by brand or variety, is helping drive sales.

The Potato Council works with the industry on a strategic level that adds value and identifi es opportunities and ways in which we can defend our strongholds and attack our competitors and at PIP we can we can further explore these opportunities that will provide a further platform for sustained marketing efforts and for reclaiming all those traditional virtues of the potato – natural, wholesome, versatile, Britishness – and applying them in a contemporary context.

Seminars

11.50am and 3.20pm

‘Aphids as Virus Vectors’Brian Fenton; Gaynor Malloch; Lesley Torrance (SCRI); Jon Pickup (SASA) and Eric Anderson (Scottish Agronomy)

Aphids are responsible for spreading the three most prevalent viruses in the Scottish seed potato crop: Potato Viruses Y and A, and Leaf Roll. Aphid species vary in the effi ciency with which they vector the different viruses. By understanding the relative vectoring effi ciency of each species and how their abundance varies throughout the season, it is possible to target insecticide treatments according to the risk to the seed crop. This can be further refi ned by incorporating the susceptibility of the potato variety to the particular virus. This approach can markedly reduce the amount of insecticide applied to the crop with consequent environmental and fi nancial benefi ts. For some viruses, such as PLRV, the monitoring and control approach has reduced virus incidence by more than 90% compared with levels found in the 1970s and early 1990s. In 2007, only 1.6% of the seed crop entered for classifi cation in Scotland was found to contain any plants infected with Leaf Roll. For PVY and PVA there is the potential to use information that is becoming available from our work to achieve similar levels of success in virus management.

This presentation will provide background on:

Differences between virus types•

Why some viruses present more of a control challenge than others•

The most important aphid vectors and their control•

What commercial and research organisations are doing to improve • understanding and control of virus spread

The associations between varieties and viruses•

Erwinia chrysanthemi on the moveIan Toth (SCRI), John Elphinstone (CSL) and Gerry Saddler (SASA)

Erwinia chrysanthemi, now called Dickeya dianthicola, appears to be moving from continental Europe. The pathogen has been entering England/Wales since the early 1990s but so far there have been no recorded cases on potato in Scotland. We will be comparing the symptoms observed on Dickeya infected potato plants with those infected with the more common blackleg pathogen, Pectobacterium atrosepticum, at different temperatures. We will discuss the objectives of a new RERAD study to investigate the implications of this disease becoming established in Scotland and the role that climate change may have on this, together with assessment of possible preventative measures. Findings from a recent Potato Council funded project to assess the current status of the pathogen in England and Wales will also be available.

SASA, in collaboration with Central Science Laboratory, has been funded by the Potato Council to test the susceptibility of potato varieties to Potato Mop Top Virus (PMTV). This virus is transmitted from infested soil via the powdery scab organism and by planting infected seed tubers. In 2007, PMTV-free seed tubers of 10 widely grown potato varieties were planted in land known to be infested with PMTV. One site was in west Perthshire and the other in north Yorkshire. Tubers were assessed for powdery scab, PMTV and spraing. Tubers from Scottish site have been planted in replicated experiments in Scotland and England to determine the extent to which PMTV infection of tuber affects plant growth of the various varieties. Tubers from 2007 English site have also been planted at the 2008 English site. Plots of 42 tubers from infested site and 28 healthy tubers of nine varieties have been planted at Potatoes in Practice.

Variation in drought tolerance in potatoesGeorge T.S., Wishart, J., Brown L.K., Ramsay G., Bradshaw, J, Gregory P.J, and White P.J.

Potatoes are currently the UK’s number one crop for the use of irrigation water. The impact of global environmental change on the sustainability of potato production is unknown, but predicted hotter drier summers mean that identifying potato cultivars which are more effi cient at capturing water will be necessary in order to maintain current yields. Plants which have large root-soil interfaces (e.g. longer thinner roots, more root hairs or symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizae) are likely to be more effi cient in capturing resources, including water. Our research has focused on using genetically well defi ned populations of potatoes to elucidate genotypic variation in root traits in plants grown in the fi eld. Our results demonstrate meaningful genotypic variation in a range of root traits important for improved resource capture including root length and mycorrhizal symbiosis. The demonstration plots show that there are large differences in drought tolerance between genotypes which have vastly differing associated root lengths. In the future, our research will

The trial plots from Potash Limited are a demonstration of the quality and yield benefi ts achieved from using a new potash + magnesium fertiliser previously marketed only in Europe. Patentkali is based on sulphate of potash with added ESTA Kieserite (natural magnesium sulphate) in a ratio perfectly tailored to the nutrient requirements of potatoes. A comparison is made against muriate of potash (MOP). Furthermore, a foliar fertiliser has been tested in conjunction with the Patentkali treated plots.

EPSO Microtop (or “Bittersalz Microtop”) is the trusted bittersalz (foliar magnesium sulphate) with additional Manganese and 1% Boron co-formulated in the mix. Fully replicated, randomised trials with this program have yielded an average increase of 3.1 tonnes/ha in 6 trials conducted over the last 3 years.

Varieties on test here today are Estima and Maris Piper to give a comparison of effects on 2 varieties with contrasting haulm vigour.

Potash Limited are key suppliers of potash, magnesium, sodium and sulphur fertilisers in the UK and Ireland and are proud to supply products such as ESTA Kieserite, Korn-Kali, Patentkali, EPSO Microtop, EPSO Combitop and Magnesia-Kainit.

Although all the benefi ts of compost are demonstrated mainly in the long term, this event is an excellent opportunity to provide visual evidence of the impacts of compost on yields and quality of the harvested potatoes. At a time when bagged fertiliser prices are rocketing, evidence of the fertiliser replacement value of compost will also be made.

Potato Varieties from SCRI: past to presentSCRI was formed in 1981 by the amalgamation of the long established Scottish Plant Breeding Station (SPBS) at Pentlandfi eld, Edinburgh, with the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute (SHRI) at Invergowrie, Dundee. The SPBS was established in 1921 at Craigs House near Edinburgh, close to a new Government Registration and Seed Testing Station based there. Potatoes received a great deal of attention from the inception of SPBS, with breeding and research focused on the many disease, agronomic and quality characteristics which are important to the crop. Today, research in the Genetics programme at SCRI is centered on identifying the location of genes underlying important traits including disease resistance (e.g. to late blight and potato cyst nematode), quality, fl avour/taste, texture, water and mineral use effi ciency. To mobilise the genes into adapted germplasm and to develop improved germplasm as well as strategies for effi cient gene isolation and validation.

Since the formation of SPBS in 1921 the research programmes have produced over 80 varieties, many of which are widely grown in today’s

There are also two new phureja varieties from Branston’s own breeding programme, which have been selected for their fl avour, texture and storability.

The Branston plot also features specially developed crops as benefi cial alternatives to chemical pest and disease control:

Foil-sis is Solanum sisymbriifolium, the sustainable and effective alternative to chemicals for the control of PCN. The crop acts as a completely risk free trap crop for PCN by triggering hatch in the soil but preventing completion of the pests’ lifecycle.

Selected mustards and some other plant species, generate effective bio-fumigants when macerated and incorporated into the soil. Fumigro is Branston’s unique blend which has been developed for the control of soil borne diseases particularly relevant to potato growers.

Herbicide TrialsWith the loss of Paraquat, there has been much debate about which of three contact herbicides, Retro, Basta or Shark provides the best alternative. In addition, there is much to learn about the combination of the three ‘new’ contact herbicide alternatives with established residual herbicides, in respect of timing and spectrum of weed control. The spring of 2008 has set a challenge for herbicides as a result of a prolonged dry period in May. These trials, carried out in conjunction with the manufacturers of the three new contact herbicides, will show the effi cacy of many contact/residual combinations.

26. Best practice for the control of powdery scabAs part of SAC’s ‘Success through Knowledge’ programme of Knowledge Transfer, where results of Scottish Government funded R&D are explained to end users, the topic chosen in the ‘Best practice’ series for PIP 2008 has been powdery scab. Work at SCRI continues on this diffi cult pathogen of potatoes and the outcomes of this work are combined with a knowledge obtained from Potato Council funded projects and practical experience by SAC. The demonstration compares tuber and soil treatments applied to two varieties using either symptomless or infected tubers.

Varieties: Estima (resistance rating 3), Marfona (resistance rating 5)

Seed infection: Symptomless, infected

Fungicide treatments: Untreated, zinc oxide seed tuber treatment (1 kg/ha 80% Zn), zinc oxide incorporated into soil pre-planting (17.5 kg/ha 80% Zn) and fl uazinam incorporated into soil pre-planting (Shirlan 3 l/ha),

Results from this trial and other Success through Knowledge work are posted on the SAC website: http://www.sac.ac.uk/consultancy/crops/ under Agronomy Services Publications

28. The carbon footprint of potato productionTogether with the University of Aberdeen (Jon Hillier and Pete Smith), and using a plot of potatoes as a backdrop, the ‘cost’ of CO2 production of each stage of growing a typical ware crop will be demonstrated. (Also the subject of a seminar)

Fertiliser trialsWith dramatic increases in fertiliser prices over the last year and fertiliser recommendations north and south of the border being revised, trials have been established to determine if current optimum recommendations are appropriate. There are two replicated trials, one investigating crop nitrogen requirements and the other phosphate. Both trials are on the second early variety Saxon being grown as a ware crop. The results for the fi ve treatments in each trial will enable a response curve to be fi tted and optimum dose determined

29. Demonstration of Avail treated phosphate and Nutrisphere nitrogen (in conjunction with Demeter Technology)

An unreplicated demonstration has been established of a standard fertiliser treatment in comparison with equivalent fertiliser treatments but where the phosphate element has been substituted with Avail treated phosphate, the nitrogen treatment has been substituted with Nutrisphere nitrogen or both nitrogen and phosphate have been substituted.

Composts made from green wastes not only provide valuable organic matter to soils but also slowly release nitrogen, phosphate, magnesium and sulphur, and provide a readily available supply of potash and micronutrients. Soils which have had these composts added also show both increased water holding capacity and infi ltration, together with improved structure and better workability.

In experiments at SCRI, sponsored by WRAP, crops are being grown, under both conventional and organic cultivation, to evaluate the agronomic benefi ts of these green waste composts on crop yield and quality.

On the 1st April 2008 the Potato Council took on the role of the potato industry development body from the British Potato Council. The Potato Council is a wholly own subsidiary of the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) which was set up as a result of the restructuring of levy bodies.

Fundamentally, there are only two primary factors that will affect the future success of the GB potato industry:

Continued demand for potatoes and potato products•

GB potatoes (as opposed to those from global competitors) fulfi lling that demand • competitively.

The GB potato industry invests in its own future through the Potato Council. The Potato Council has sought to understand the business environment for potatoes and use this understanding to present information and analysis to assist industry to achieve the twin goals above and to shape its own future.

Potatoes in Practice has developed into an essential part of this communication between the Potato Council and its levy payers and stakeholders. The event provides an excellent opportunity for forward thinking members of the industry to take full advantage of their own investment.

SASA, part of the Scottish Government’s Rural Payments and Inspections Directorate, is the Certifying Authority for seed potato production in Scotland and manages the Seed Potato Classifi cation Scheme (SPCS). The SPCS helps ensure Scotland’s reputation for the production of high quality seed potatoes, through strict tolerances for freedom from disease and trueness to type. SASA also carries out a range of scientifi c activities in support of seed potato classifi cation in Scotland. For example, most Scottish seed potatoes are derived initially from pathogen-tested microplants held in SASA’s nuclear stock unit. SASA also carries out testing for potato cyst nematodes (PCN) and potato diseases, as well as monitoring the level of the aphids which spread some virus diseases.

SCRI’s research focuses on processes that regulate the growth of plants and their responses to pests, pathogens and the environment. It includes genetics to breed crops with improved quality and nutritional value as fast as possible.

By understanding plants’ responses to pests and diseases and how they react to the soil, air and water around them, environmentally friendly and sustainable methods of protecting crops from the ravages of pests, diseases and weeds are developed.

The main customer for our research is the Scottish Government, although we undertake commissioned research for a wide range of government bodies and commercial organisations.

Making the most of nature “Utilizing Solanum phureja to breed disease resistant potato cultivars for the future”

Contact: Jennie BrierleyEmail: [email protected]

Solanum phureja is the second most widely cultivated type of potato in South America. SCRI has produced a population adapted to Scottish growing conditions from accessions in the Commonwealth Potato Collection. Phureja potatoes have a number of properties which make it of particular interest to the potato industry. Apart from its desirable textural and fl avour properties (see neighbouring display), it also has natural resistance to a number of pathogens and pests, including viruses such as PVY, bacteria including Pectobacterium and the more recent exotic threat Dickeya, and Phytophthora. Multi-faceted research at SCRI is focussing on harnessing these benefi cial properties to breed new commercial potato cultivars. This display will be focus on current research into disease resistance of S. phureja and how these resistances may be used to enhance the breeding of new cultivars to meet the needs of the potato industry.

Potato fl avour and texture

Contact: Mark TaylorEmail: [email protected]

Flavour and texture are traits of increasing importance to consumers and processors. Despite this, relatively little is known about these traits probably because they are diffi cult to quantify. Research at SCRI has identifi ed potato germplasm, most notably the Phureja group, which produce tubers with distinctive fl avour and texture. This material is being analysed in order to gain insights into the compounds and genes that are important for fl avour and texture. For example, it has been shown that compounds that give rise to the umami taste are elevated in potatoes with a preferred fl avour. Aroma compounds or fl avour volatiles are also different in the preferred potato types and a gene involved in aroma production has recently been identifi ed. Similarly genes that might impact on potato tuber texture are under analysis.

SEPA regulates to improve environmental quality and protect all water users. The regulations covering abstractions came into force on 1 April 2006 under the Controlled Activities Regulations (CAR). These require all abstractions (over 10 cubic metres per day) to be authorised. Just over 700 of the 2400 abstraction authorisations are for irrigation.

Data indicates that, of the Scottish water bodies failing good status, 28% fail due to irrigation abstractions.

SEPA’s regulation of these abstractions follows the following principles:

Focus regulatory and monitoring effort where the environmental risks are • greatest

Biofresh is the market-leader in innovative fresh produce storage systems. Our ethylene management systems provide store managers and growers with a simple to operate, low-cost, highly effective method of inhibiting sprouting in the stored potato crop. Biofresh systems replace the need to treat your crops with more conventional sprout suppressants that always leave a residue and therefore solve any issues in meeting residue legislation and testing throughout the distribution chain. What’s more, because there’s no residue in the store or on the boxes, you’re free to hold seed crops in the same environment.

Sárpo potatoes – exceptionally high resistance to late-blight disease both in foliage and in the tuber.

Sárpo potatoes are resistant to the “Blue 13” strain of blight which is able to overcome resistance in many varieties. Sárpo potatoes have been bred specifi cally in Hungary for their suitability for low-input cultivation and storage. They have been successfully tested at many sites in UK and in Europe by the Sárvári Research Trust over the last 10 years and have retained their high resistance to late-blight. High resistance to common viruses, weed smothering foliage and dormancy in ambient store also mean that they yield large crops with the lowest carbon footprint. Our range of early and maincrop varieties with differing end-uses are demonstrated.

Protect your fertiliser, protect your yields

Fertiliser enhancers from SFP take your fertiliser investment further. They work all season long to inhibit unwanted soil processes that rob your crop of essential nutrients.

AVAIL® Phosphorous Fertiliser Enhancer forms an active shield around phosphorus, so that more is available to the plant.

NutriSphere-N® Nitrogen Fertiliser Manager helps stop unwanted leaching and volatilisation, keeping more nitrogen available to your crop.

More nutrient availability and uptake can lead to better yields. In fi eld after fi eld, crop after crop, NutriSphere-N and AVAIL have increased yield potential 10–15%. Ask your dealer or visit www.specialtyfertilizer.com.
