_____________ALLOWING TIME FOR REFLECTIONby Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

I met an acquaintance who suffered a sudden loss. He was very grateful for having a supporting and loving family who came to be with him and his family while adjusting to the new reality. “But,” he added “what I desperately need is some quiet time to process and reflect, and I cannot find it.” I was touched by his honesty and insight. Our fast-paced life today makes it harder and less common to really take the time to reflect on the meaning of our experiences, the choices we have made, and the direction we are heading.

Despite the modern term, the concept of binge-living is not new. Almost a millennium ago, the renowned commentator, Rashi,

who was writing in the now famous region of northern France, Champagne, reminded his students of the importance of pausing and taking their time. “When you look at the Torah scroll, you focus on the black letters,” he writes, “but the white parchment around the letters is an integral part of the Torah, and in fact, the white space is a higher form of Torah.” The white space meant to give Moses an interval for reflection between one division and another and between one subject and another. If Moses needed the breathing space, these moments of reflection, some time to slow down, we, too, need space and time to think, to process, to reflect.

In his essay “The Busy Trap” Tim Kreider argues that, “Busyness serves as a kind of existential reassurance, a hedge against emptiness; obviously your life cannot possibly be silly or trivial or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked, in demand every hour of the day.” [The New York Times, June 30, 2012].

We need to ease our never-ending busyness, to allow self-reflection and the opportunity to look closely at the people we have become and ask deep questions of ourselves. We must take time for those things that we really value, that are precious and sacred and enrich our life.

When God summoned Moses up Mount Sinai we read, “Come up the mountain to Me,” God says, “and be there.” (Ex. 24:12). The Kotzker Rebbe taught that even after a person struggles to reach the summit of a mountain, it is still possible not to be there. We’re often so focused on climbing the mountain that when we finally arrive we are distracted away from that place and that moment.

Henry David Thoreau asked, “Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?” In a form of an answer, I’m packing the car in preparation for a short camping trip with bad cell reception and no wi-fi.

Happy Passover,

___________ A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTby Bruce Cohen

For most of my Scribe articles, I try to discuss upcoming events and some of the important activities that have been happening here at the Temple. But 2018 is a big year for my family, and much of it involves Temple Beth Am, so I thought I’d share a little with you.

Recently Maureen and I took Madison to meet with Rabbi Alon, Rabbinic Intern Brett, and Cantorial soloist Marcy to begin planning for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah. Though it’s not our first time doing this, there are still those feelings of anticipation, anxiety, excitement, and questioning. How are we going to get everything done? You start thinking about the invites, the theme, the food, and of course probably the biggest unknown—how is the studying going to go? Most of us with kids have been thinking about these things in the back of our minds for years but after that first meeting it becomes real. Every kid is different. Some are eager to get going and others are a little more intimidated with the whole idea. I admit the binder with everything in it she needs to lead her Service and the Dropbox full of Brett singing each prayer and chanting her portion…that did give me flashbacks to when Brielle began

this process and the uncertainty that came with it. While Maddie has been coming to Temple since she was a baby, when Brett asked if she knew the prayers she said she probably knows the HaMotzi. But the fact is she probably knows most all of them fairly well. Having attended preschool here and spent Sundays and Tuesdays here at religious school for the last six years, it does give us a level of confidence we wouldn’t have otherwise. And it probably does for Maddie too, though I’m sure she doesn’t realize it.

After your Bar or Bat Mitzvah it might be easy to think that you’re done, you’re an adult and that’s that. But that’s not the case. At Temple Beth Am we realize just how important it is to keep our post-B’nei Mitzvah kids involved. Our youth department is working harder than ever to enhance programs for this age group and keep them engaged. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah is just one step along our Jewish journey. So another mitzvah we celebrate this year is Brielle’s confirmation here at Temple Beth Am. And it’s even more meaningful that she does this with a group of her friends, many of whom she has known throughout religious school, some since kindergarten, and some even before. And she is excited to continue to be involved with the high school program.

I will also share that my son Steven is getting married this year to Emily, his long-time girlfriend, and my daughter Laura, who got married last year, has moved to

California and with her PhD is now a practicing psychologist. I mention this because though they are not here with us in south Florida, I know they feel a strong connection to this Temple and when they come home to visit it means so much to them to have this Temple, and the people within it here as part of their extended family as well.

In some ways we are probably the luckiest generation of Jewish people to have lived, especially here, in the U.S., in south Florida, in northern Palm Beach County, and especially right here within the walls of Temple Beth Am. I’m so thankful for this Temple and all the people here who dedicate their lives to it. We are a big family, and I hope each of you feels this connection in some way. We look after each other when we need to and we share in each other’s mitzvahs. Sometimes maybe we take some of this for granted but there are few things more meaningful to me in my life than when I walked through the Sanctuary with Brielle carrying the Torah and seeing the love and caring in the faces of the people who had come to share our special day, and nervousness aside, I so look forward to sharing this same feeling in November with Madison.

Chag Sameach and Happy Passover,

Bruce Cohen

SISTERHOOD SCOOP ___________________________by Lois Remick

By the time you read this, spring will have arrived in Florida! I do not know how YOU realize that spring is here, but I am able to tell by the parked car carriers, the rise in Jet Blue airline fare to the Northeast, and, best of all, fewer crowds at my favorite restaurant.

I am not complaining, as I love when the snowbirds are down...even my sister and her hubby are snowbirds. And, of course, I do love the financial benefit my city gets. If anything, I am sorry to see them leave because…now you finish the sentence, send me your reasons, and I will put them in the next Scribe.

Spring is a great time for new beginnings, and your Sisterhood Board has new officers:President: Sharon RosenVice President: Brenda KramerTreasurer: Carole Levine (remains in position since 2017) Secretary: Shelly KissilFlower Fund: Sharon Rosen (remains in position since 2017)Membership: Maril Levy (remains in position since 2017)Liaison to TBA Board: Debbie BasemanThe Scribe: Lois Remick (see the following!)

Ah, as The Scribe writer since “the term millennial was invented”, I am humbly putting forth the qualifications for this position in the hope that somebody would like to try their hand at the job:1. Knowledge of English as a

second language…helpful

2. Ability to read a calendar so that you get your article in on time

3. Any computer you have will do…even one that still has WordPerfect

4. Enjoying fantasies is helpful, but factual stuff will be supplied

5. While Margot, Carolyn, and Debbie may say that getting articles in on time is like pulling teeth…believe me, when you finish the article, you will feel like a tooth was pulled, (without anesthetic)

6. Not necessary to know lots of people at Temple, and the fewer who know you, the better (everybody is a critic!)

7. I will personally treat you to a donut with your coffee at the Barry Minde Coffee Bar…he always loved a good joke (no reflection on your writing)

8. Having a high school degree is helpful; a PhD even better

9. You do not have to be on our board…that is the perk!

10. Just thought it was fitting to have 10…as in commandments. You think Moses was up the mountain for a long time? That was nothing compared to how long you will have this job!

Ok…enough kibitzing. Just try it…you’ll love it. Now to important stuff.

Tuesday, April 10, is our event at the Society of the Four Arts. The exhibit “Fashioning Art from Paper” by Isabelle de Borchgrave has been receiving great accolades. If you

wish to attend, you must RSVP by Friday, April 6, to Carole Levine at 561.339.3909, or [email protected]. There will be a $5 charge for the audio guided tour. All information on this event is on the ad in this Scribe.

Please note that there is a change of venue for our Third Tuesday Lunch on April 17. We will be having lunch at Seasons 52 in Palm Beach Gardens. For those who are not familiar with this restaurant, it is close to the intersection of PGA Blvd. and Ellison Wilson Road. The exact location is 11611 Ellison Wilson Rd. if you are using your GPS. As in all Third Tuesday Lunches, you must RSVP to Carole Levine at 561.339.3909. Any Sisterhood member who has a birthday in April will be our guest for lunch. All other attendees will pay for their order. We hope to see you at both of the above events.

We thank Rabbi Alon, Brett, Marcy, Evelyn Maltman, and the TBA Choir for helping to provide a wonderful Sisterhood Shabbat Service. This annual Shabbat Service is very special for our Sisterhood as it combines the talent of our sisters in the choir with the spirituality of Shabbat.

As we head on into late spring/summer, I ask you to stay tuned to both The Scribe and our emails informing everyone about our upcoming events and Third Tuesday lunch venues.

Wishing you all a memorably happy Passover.

____________________ MEN’S CLUB HAPPENINGSby Mel Wolfe and Harvey Silverman

We are now fully recovered from our participation in the amazing Purim Carnival primarily sponsored by TBA’s Religious School and its volunteers. Men’s Club assisted by providing the needed labor to see that attendees and staff were well fed. Mark Slifkin and Bob Hochman started the day by seeing that the tomato toppings and pickles were ready to go. Also helping were Jack Tenenbaum, Joe Meshil (wife Carole worked the ticket sales with Carol Carswell), while Mark and Bruce Cohen chipped in at the food service line. The burgers, hot dogs, and even the veggie burgers with drinks were available to all who desired them on a timely basis. Rabbi Alon was spotted eating one of our great hot dogs.

We would be remiss if we did not comment on the cooking contingent led by Grillmaster Bob Hochman, Hot Dog Chefs Mel Wolfe and George Kissil, and Expediter Fred

Lissauer. Richard Remick was also on hand to assist them all as needed. Honorable mention goes to other participants Maureen and Brielle Cohen, (assisting on the serving line), Roni Kissil, who assisted with everything and everyone, and Jarrett Simon who ably acted as the “food runner” from the grill to the serving line. Our food preparation and serving volunteers were ably led by TBA’s renowned and very own Chef Eric.

We will soon need to impose on these same volunteers as well as others for the Yom Hashoah Service on April 6, and the Yom HaAtzmaut Service and picnic April 20 at the beach. (Eric promises another outstanding bar-b-que chicken and hot dog dinner.)

Our May 6 Charity Golf Tournament at Sandhill Crane Golf Club off Northlake Blvd. is

fast approaching. Golf Tournament Committee Members Mel Wolfe, Jerry Rosman, and Peter Sandquist are ably led by Chairperson Bob Hochman. Details are in this issue and will be in following issues of The Scribe. This is shaping up as a real fun event with hole-in-one prizes on this easy (not a rumor) course, including one $10,000 prize and several smaller prizes. Each player, in addition to a “goody bag”, will also receive a mail-in coupon for two golf clubs, one 60 Degree Wedge and one 19 Degree Hybrid. Participating golfers also receive an Awards Luncheon Buffet. Guests may join you at the luncheon for a separate charge.

Our annual monthly off-season “Dinner Out” nights begin on May 23 at Casa Mia and concludes in October. More information will be in this and following Scribe editions and email blasts.

BOOK CLUB _____________________________________by Edie Wolf

Thanks to everyone who attended our March book discussion group where we had an interesting discussion of THE ORPHAN’S TALE by Pam Jenoff. Please join us on April 9 at 10:30am at the Temple for a discussion of:

KEEPERS OF THE HOUSE by Shirley Ann Grau - Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1965, “The Keepers of the House” is Shirley Ann Grau’s masterwork, a many-layered indictment of racism and rage that is as terrifying as it is wise. Entrenched on the same land since the early 1800s, the Howlands have, for seven generations, been pillars of their Southern community. Extraordinary family lore has been passed down to Abigail Howland, but not all of it. When shocking facts come to light about her late grandfather William’s relationship with Margaret Carmichael, a black housekeeper, the community is outraged, and quickly gathers to vent its fury on Abigail. Alone in the house the Howlands built, she is at once shaken by those who have betrayed her, and determined to punish the town that has persecuted her and her kin.

For those of you who are interested, we will meet at First Watch, 6240 W. Indiantown Road, Jupiter for lunch after the book discussion.

Please RSVP to me at [email protected] or 443.223.9729 to let me know if you are coming to the Book Club and/or to lunch.

It’s also time for us to choose the books that we will read for next season. Please send me no more than three book titles (preferably books you have read and can recommend as good discussion books). I will compile a list and send it to you to vote for your 6 favorites. The books that receive the most votes will be the ones we read and discuss next year. Thanks!!

THE ONE SCHOOL NEWS FOR APRIL ___________by Paula Deakter, Early Childhood Director

The Value of Play in Early Childhood Learning

One of the things we’ve learned is that when children engage in pretend play, have imaginary friends, or explore alternative worlds, they are learning what people are like, how people think, and the kinds of things people can do.

This helps children learn to understand themselves and other people. We have evidence that this kind of understanding leads to social adjustment in school and social competence in life.

Parents are in a state of panic over academic preparedness. It is hard for both parents and teachers to resist this pressure, which is coming from everywhere. What a teacher can say to parents is, “Play is not just some touchy-feely activity. And it is not just that you want to leave children alone and not rush them. There is hard evidence that children learn more things through play than they would in some academic setting.”

Children are eventually going to learn to recognize letters. But learning how people work and what’s in others’ minds is a much deeper and more profound learning. Ironically, parents who think they are helping their children by exposing them to

flashcards with letters on them are doing less to help their children than parents who expose their children to pretend play, read to them, and talk with them.

I think that even the term preschooler is a bit misleading. It implies that our job is to get children ready for school and that school is where the important things happen. But preschool isn’t just about readiness. It’s an important entity in its own right. Indeed, what preschool teachers do is arguably more important than what occurs in the elementary school. And I think we have lots of evidence of that now!

I would like to thank Dr. Myles Cooley for bringing the Second Step program to our Pre-K children this year. This is a program that is designed to help guide children to learn, practice, and apply skills for self-regulation and social-emotional competence. The teacher completes a weekly lesson with a theme, brain builder games and reinforcement of skills and ways to engage families. And with all these tools, we prepare our Pre-K children for their experience in kindergarten both socially and emotionally.

Some photos from our Children’s Outreach program on March 7, 2018. The children who

visited our Shining Stars celebrated friendship through music with Mr.

Brett, by making friendship bracelets, and by visiting and planting in our community garden. The children

also all shared lunch together in our social hall at the end of the visit.

WHY YOU SHOULD SKIP SERVICES ON 4/27 __by Danna Cohen, Jewish Life Activities Director

I love Shabbat Services at Temple Beth Am. I am here almost every week and am the last person who would tell you to purposely stay home. So why am I skipping? Because on Friday, April 27, Temple Beth Am is holding its second Pop-Up Shabbat of the year. In January we hosted our first Pop-Up Shabbat and almost 40 people got to join their friends for dinner and bring in Shabbat together in their homes. Hosts invited new friends, old friends, members and non-members. Some cooked, some potlucked, some ordered take out. Some let their kids lead the blessings, some used

our audio recordings, some went traditional, some went casual, and one host even turned their dinner into a game show and all the guests were contestants! It was amazing to hear what a wonderful experience this was for everyone who participated, and so we are doing it again on April 27. Yes, there will be Services at the Temple, but I encourage you to skip them (or come after or before dinner). If you are interested in signing up or want more information see the ad below and don’t hesitate to contact me by calling the Temple at 561.747.1109 or by sending me an email at [email protected].

TBA Community Pop-Up Shabbat

Friday, April 27, 2018Three Simple Steps:

1. Invite your friends, neighbors, or someone new to celebrate Shabbat together. (Fancy or casual, big or small, your house or not—anything goes!)

2. Register with us and we’ll provide a hosting bag with challah, grape juice, candles, blessings, music, and a few surprises for your soiree!

3. Engage in new conversations, break bread together, and see what develops!

All participants will receive details and assistance in planning and executing an amazing Shabbat Dinner experience!

Five hundred years of fashion are explored in the breathtaking art of Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave. Painting and manipulating the paper, she forms trompe l’oeil masterpieces of elaborate dresses. Rarely seen in the U.S., this exhibition presents quintessential examples in the history of costumes—from Renaissance finery of the Medici family and gowns worn by Elizabeth I and Marie Antoinette to the creations of the grand couturiers Frederick Worth, Paul Poiret, Christian Dior, and Coco Chanel.

Movie synopsis: Mossad agent Naomi is called back from sick leave and assigned to a “babysitting” job. Under a new identity, she heads to Germany to protect Mona, a beautiful Lebanese informant whom special agents have pulled from her country and hidden in a Hamburg safe house while she recovers from plastic surgery. Naomi soon learns that Mona is very close to a top Hezbollah leader, a man she betrayed and who is dead-set on exacting revenge. During the two weeks they spend together, an unexpected bond forms between the two women, forged from shared risks and a deep understanding of loss. But in this high stakes game of deception, questions of fate may be out of their control.
