The spokesman of the party (a chief who ac- companied the delegation that visited Washing- ton last winter) replied, in substance, as follows: "In shaking bands with you, Ci mmessioner, I lhake hands with all who are present, and I will tell yon what busnes brought ,s here. I speak in behalf of the chiefs whohaveaccompanied me. We come to you in an irregu. larway, lies the Indienwho is outon a huntand wieshs to Steal upon hi game;that is to say,we cameaway by stelth. "On my return home last spring, I was constantlyat workup to this time, telling Indians what you toldtsond in getting them to follow your advice." He spoke forsome time, and stated further that they had not received their farming imple- ments which had been promised to them, and that this was the cause of their visit. A second chief next. addressed the Commis- sioner, saying : " For what reason havewe leLft our homes to see you ? We hadnothing, andwere in low condition ; but nowthat wehave found yoau we think wear "much." The child that came to you last winterstole our lands, and wenow cometo havematter straightened. Ifcoy person should steal yourproperty and give it awry, you wouldnotlike iti andwouldinsist on lookinginto the mutter." Several medals were given to the Commission- er for the purpose of having new strings put to them, and a document was submitted purport- ing to contain the sentiments of the Indians, Sand to set forth what they want. They asked the Commissioner to tell them where they should live, and expressed a great willingness to go to work. [Washington Union, 25th. CHRIsTMAS AiMVSsMsT T. - The Charleston Courier relates the following pleasant little in- cident, which occurred in that city on Christ- mas day: About noon of Christmas, two persons, Joseph Dewett and Edward Jones, were walking on Calhounstreet, and on reaching the corner of the Bay, observed some men in a German grog- gory there located, cruelly beating a victim by name James Gibbs. They stopped, and looked in to ascertain the nature and cause of the.dis- turbance; but on finding out the character And composition of-the crowd, judged it prudent not to attempt interference. They had not proceed- ed far, when two persons from the crowd en- gaged in the outrage-J. Christand S. Vierfeld- er--turned loose two savage bull dogs after these gentlemen, who were quietly pursuing their way. The dogs soon overtaking their vic- tims, hove them down, and were assisted by their biped brethren and instigators, who were armed with loaded sticks or bludgeons, and the unfortunate sufferers were thus cruelly and brutally lacerated, and beaten by dogsand men. The savage game was stopped by the active and prompt interference of MIr. T. C. Hubbell, who happened to pass, and the police soon com- ing up, arrested the chief actors. The dogs were dispatched this morning sum- marily, by order of the Mayor, who turned over the biped brutes to H. W. Schroeder, Esq., as prosecuting magistrate. The chief facts or the case are abundantly established by the testimo- ny of several respectable citizens. THE LAST AncTIr EXPEDITIOs.-The St. Paul Free Press furnishes the following particulars of Mr. Stewart's expedition, in addition to those obtained from the Pioneer : Mr. Stewart arrived from Red river last eve- ning, on his way to Canada, bearing dispatches for Sir George Simpson, containing information of the discovery of the point where Sir John Franklin and his party perished. It was on the coast opposite Montreal Island. Their bones lie buried in the sand, within an extent of twelve miles. This is the fifth winter since they perished, and the drifting sands of that barren region, being in lat. 68 deg. north, have piled in successive layers on the bones of those noble and ill-fated men. Mr. Stewart describes the region as dreary in the extreme-not a blade of grass nor a stick of timber met the eye. No game of any kind could be found. The Esquimaux, from whom their information was obtained by signs, pressed their fingers into their cheeks, and, placing their hands on their stomachs, endeavored to indicate the manner of their horrible death. They were charged with killing them, but merely answered with their sighs. It was a very expeditious trip, it being only thirteen months since the party left the Red river settlements. COL. FRENCH NOTTO BE RECOGNIZED.-The Washington correspondent of the New York Herald writes, under date of the 24th: Col. Parker H. French addressed a letter to Mr. Marcy, enclosing a cpy of his credentials as Minister from NicaragUa, and requesting an interview. Mr. Marcy replied, and, instead of appointing an interview, anticipated what he would have said at once, which was, in sub- stance, that the persons who had overthrown the government of Nicaragua were not citizens; and until there should have been some popular recognition or confirmation of their authority, the United States could not recognise Colonel French, nor any one else, as Minister from the new government. I know these to be the facts, and you can rely upon them as such, notwith- standing any and all statements, by whomso- ever made, to the contrary. B1. DECIDEDLY COOL -- The editor of the Colum- bus (Ga.) Corner Stone is not the only disu- nionist of the country. He has the merit, however, of franknessand fearlessness. He gives the following reason for the interest that journal has manifested in the subject of Kansas emigration. It says: " We feel no interest in the Kansas question, except that resulting from the hope that they may get up a difficulty over it, which may, by possibility result in a dissolution of the lnion. We would not,for any other benefit we expect theSouth toderive from it, turn our heel for choice whether it shall be a free or a slave State." At a trial at " Nisi Prius," held before the Chief Baron of the Exchequer in Ireland, a witness was so severely badgered in his cross- examination by counsel, that he rushedout of court and threw himself in the river Liffey, and notwithstanding all the exert:ians made to save him, was drowned. Tom Bayley, who never held a brief, but could always say a good thing, upon being toldof theoccurrence, said thatthe quotation "Quos dens vult per- dare. prius dementat," should be changed to " Quos deus vult perdere nisi prius dementat," which being freely render ed, would read, " whom the gods wish to destroy, they first try Sat Nisi Prina." The Filibuster Excitement.. The seizure and detention of the steamer Northern Light in New York harbor on the 24th, created intense excitement throughout the city. The papers are filled with accounts of the affair. From that of the Herald we ex- tract some of the most interesting and amusing particulars. District Attorney McKeon, having warned the authorities at Washington that a filibuster excitement was about to sail, received the fol- lowing l4iegraphic dispatch: Mr. McKen advanced to the gang plank, which they were then hauling in; he sprung on that part of the plank resting on the spryng piece, and thus became elevated above the mass of the crowd. "Don'thaul this gang plank in," cried Mr. McKeon, "Get off the end of that plak' roared out the menon..bord-theveseels "This vessel cannot go," cried pnutMr. Me- Keeon, in a loud- voice. Then, turning to the menon deck, the filibusters, he said, "Boys, come ashore; this steamer can't go; I hold in my hand the authority of the President of the United States to stop her." (This was received win thsouts of derision.) "Get off the plank;' said the men on boardi "pull in the, plank." "Do, ifyou dare," said the District Attorney. :"I'll hold every one of yea responsible for the act." "Throw him off the dock," said one fel- low. " Not so fast," says theindomitable John; "I will read you the Preeidetit' authority to myself and Capt. Bigelow, of tahe Nayt." " Voices--"Reesd, read." Mr. IMKeon commenced to read, when these were shouts of derision. Mr., MiKeon found it impossible to read so as to be heard; but seeing fIthe Captain in the wheel-house, who had Been attracted thereby the noise on shore, he ad- dressd drthe Cptain (Tinklepaogh,) crying out to him, "Captain, this vessel mustnot go. I am the District Attorney of the United States, and hold the authority of the President to de- tain her." The Captain appeared to avoid hearing the District Attorney. SThe District Attorney, seeing'the determina- Stion of the persons in charge of the steamer to get off, and the evident disposition of the crowd on the wharf to sustain them, "cried out, "Americans, will you not, sustain your own laws?" whereupon one gentlemanly looking o man stepped forward and said, "By God, sir, I will stand by you,'for yo do stand by the laws." I, At this moment officer Horton (deputzed by d the Marshal) sprang alongside the District At- Storney, who inquired of Horton "Where are the o officers having in charge the execution of the libel t" "There are four of them on board," answered Mr. Horton. aDistrict Attorney-Then, sir, they shall not take them to sea. At this time Mr. Clark and Hr. Joaohimsen had returned to pier No. 3. Mr. Clark went towards the ship, and she immediately put her wheels in motion, having on board Mr. tyer and his assistant, Mr. Peter Cook, who stood on the quarter of the hurricane deck the observed of rall observers, prepared for an involuntary visit to the shady groves of Tropical Nicaragua. Mr. McKeon had then left, and went to the office of the Nicaragua Transit Company, where i he metMr. Jo. L. Whie, to when he readthe di. t patch from the Executive. lr. White replied to Mr: MeKeon in the most uncourteous terms, and said that he did not eare a d---n for the President of the Uni- rted States or his dispatches. Mr. McKeon, disregarding the abuse of the counsel and general agent of the Nicaragna Company, proceeded atonce to the United States barge office, at the foot of State street, where he found Mr. Vanbuskirk, who was the officer 1in-charge of that department. Mr. MeKeon read' to him the executive authority, and direct- ed him to take a steamtug, lying off the barge office, and to place on board a number of the officers of the customs, then present, to proceed at once to the revenue cutter lying at theoppo- site side of the river, to tow the cutter to the North river, so as to intercept the passage out r of the Northern Light. 3Mr. McKeon then left to go to the Navy Yard to confer with Captain Bigelow, whom he saw. Capt. B. at once agreed to send the cutter with a sufficient armed force to detain the Northern Light, if she had not left the wharf; he also said he would have two steamers in an hour and a half anchored off the Northern Light. About a quarter before four, theNorthern Light left the wharf, and proceeded into the river, having on board the United States Mar- shals, intending, no doubt, to carry them to sea, as the filibusters did at San Francisco.- The revenue cutter, in tow of the steam tug, moved through Buttermilk channel, so ts to in- tercept the Northern Light on her passage down the Bay. The Northern Light came on in the direction of Eli Island, and stood down the bay with her head towards Sandy book. The revenue coutter went with the greatest rapidity towards the Northern Light, and fired a blank cartridge to bring the vessel to. The Northern Light still kept on her course, when the cutter then fired a ball, which pissed under the "forefoot" of the Northern Light. This produced the desired effect; her wheels were immediately stopped, upon which the officer of the revenue cutter boarded her, and brought her up to the North river, and anchored her near the Jersey shore, under the guns of the revenue cutter. On the return of Messrs. MleKeon and Joaeh- mesen to the District Attorney's office, Mr. Horace F. Clark again applied to board the ship, to which Mr. MlcKeon replied that he now acted under the direct authority of the Presi- dent of the United States, under which bonds were not admissable; and that the character of the transaction must first be clearly ascertained before anything definite as to bail could be de- termined upon. Iu the evening, after all these things had transpired, Mr. McKeon received the following letter: The captainof the eutter require.a written order from Mr. Mehclen, to detain the steamer Northern Light, now atanchor, with the cutter near. The steamboat is eait. ing atoutr wharf to take the order. Respectfully, J. L. VAN BUSKIRK, Inspector. HIon. JoHe, MtKeoe, U S. District Attorney. The steamer is near the Jersey shore. He thereupon issued the followin order : New YOer, Dee. 21--6 P. M. So : Youwill detain the steamerNorthern Light, now anchor, until you receivefurther orders from me. Yourbs, respectlully. JOIIN McKEON, District Attorney. To the Captain of U. S. Revenue Cutter, New York IHarbor. Mr. Joseph L. White, accompanied by Cap- tain Tincklepangh, called at the residence of Mr. McKeon, in Thirty-seventh street, and the former apoeogised for the language he had used towards the Attorney in the early part of the day. ole admitted that the detention of the vessel was proper, as there were over a hundred men on board without tickets, and he asked the authority of the Attorney to assist in putting them on shore; he said they were desperate, and were causing much disorder on the vessel. Several officers of the Nicaragua Transit com- pany were present, to whom Mr. McKeon promised an investigation of the affair on the next morning. It was also stated that Mr. Mo- Keon said, in ttrning to Capt. Tinklepaugh,"I will arrest you to-morrow, sir, for your defiance of the law. You must have known of the libel on the vessel, and I called to you, when stand- ing on your own wheel-house, not to take that vessel out. It was a most unwarrantable de- fiance of the law, to attempt to run that vessel to sea ;" and then turning to the officers of the company, he said, "Mr. Scott, your agent at Nicaragua cannot go in the steamer. As for the steamer, she cannot go until I am satisfied that the expedition is broken up, and I have the att- thority of the President to release her." At six o'clock Mr. MoKeon telegraphed to Mr. Cushing-- "l Northern Lght brought back My statements con- firmed by bmfvit. Rtport to morrowby malt JOHN McKEON." To this, at twelve o'clock last night, Mr. Me Keen received "te following answers both fron the Attorney Geheraland the President: Jo Me eei riey"" December 24 1855. LvrDIA Byasa•- Chippeowa Indians. -Adelegation of Indians from the several bandscomposing the Chippewa nation, arrived inWashington on Saturday lest, and held- a "talk"with the Commissioner of Indian Affairs at theIndian office, yesterday morning-anumberingnine persons, inclusive of the interpr ter, hiseon, and an Indian from New York, Imed"Corn Planter," who joined them on t' ; way,

After some preliminary remarks on bothsides, in which Commissioner IManypennystatedthat it is his intention to try to break up thepractice of Indians coming to Washington ; andthat it would be better for them to stay at home;quit " talking," and refuse to sign their namesto papers they do; not understand-it was inti-'mated that they would be heard if they wouldstate the objecteof their visit.

The spokesman of the party (a chief who ac-companied the delegation that visited Washing-ton last winter) replied, in substance, as follows:

"In shaking bands with you, Ci mmessioner, I lhakehands with all who are present, and I will tell yon whatbusnes brought ,s here. I speak in behalf of the chiefswho have accompanied me. We come to you in an irregu.lar way, lies the Indien who is out on a hunt and wieshs toSteal upon hi game; that is to say,we came away by stelth.Last wioter yo spent three day in inestruoting o to liveas you do, and we know that ppur feelings for us arekind, or you ould not have been chosen to give on in-struction. I liethn to you when you talk to us. Yourinstractions made me feen grateful, and made me wish Icould speak in your olanguage.

"On my return home last spring, I was constantly atwork up to this time, telling Indians what you toldtsondin getting them to follow your advice."

He spoke forsome time, and stated furtherthat they had not received their farming imple-ments which had been promised to them, andthat this was the cause of their visit.

A second chief next. addressed the Commis-sioner, saying :

" For what reason have we leLft our homes to see you ?We had nothing, and were in low condition ; but now thatwe have found yoau we think we ar "much." The childthat came to you last winterstole our lands, and we nowcometo have matter straightened. Ifcoy person shouldsteal your property and give it awry, you would not likeiti and would insist on looking into the mutter."

Several medals were given to the Commission-er for the purpose of having new strings put tothem, and a document was submitted purport-ing to contain the sentiments of the Indians,Sand to set forth what they want. They askedthe Commissioner to tell them where they shouldlive, and expressed a great willingness to go towork. [Washington Union, 25th.

CHRIsTMAS AiMVSsMsT T. - The CharlestonCourier relates the following pleasant little in-cident, which occurred in that city on Christ-mas day:

About noon of Christmas, two persons, JosephDewett and Edward Jones, were walking onCalhounstreet, and on reaching the corner ofthe Bay, observed some men in a German grog-gory there located, cruelly beating a victim byname James Gibbs. They stopped, and lookedin to ascertain the nature and cause of the.dis-turbance; but on finding out the character Andcomposition of-the crowd, judged it prudent notto attempt interference. They had not proceed-ed far, when two persons from the crowd en-gaged in the outrage-J. Christand S. Vierfeld-er--turned loose two savage bull dogs afterthese gentlemen, who were quietly pursuingtheir way. The dogs soon overtaking their vic-tims, hove them down, and were assisted bytheir biped brethren and instigators, who werearmed with loaded sticks or bludgeons, and theunfortunate sufferers were thus cruelly andbrutally lacerated, and beaten by dogs andmen.

The savage game was stopped by the activeand prompt interference of MIr. T. C. Hubbell, who happened to pass, and the police soon com-ing up, arrested the chief actors.

The dogs were dispatched this morning sum-marily, by order of the Mayor, who turned overthe biped brutes to H. W. Schroeder, Esq., asprosecuting magistrate. The chief facts or thecase are abundantly established by the testimo-ny of several respectable citizens.

THE LAST AncTIr EXPEDITIOs.-The St. PaulFree Press furnishes the following particularsof Mr. Stewart's expedition, in addition to thoseobtained from the Pioneer :

Mr. Stewart arrived from Red river last eve-ning, on his way to Canada, bearing dispatchesfor Sir George Simpson, containing informationof the discovery of the point where Sir JohnFranklin and his party perished.

It was on the coast opposite Montreal Island.Their bones lie buried in the sand, within anextent of twelve miles. This is the fifth wintersince they perished, and the drifting sands ofthat barren region, being in lat. 68 deg. north, have piled in successive layers on the bones ofthose noble and ill-fated men.

Mr. Stewart describes the region as drearyin the extreme-not a blade of grass nor a stickof timber met the eye. No game of any kindcould be found.

The Esquimaux, from whom their informationwas obtained by signs, pressed their fingers intotheir cheeks, and, placing their hands on theirstomachs, endeavored to indicate the manner oftheir horrible death. They were charged withkilling them, but merely answered with theirsighs.

It was a very expeditious trip, it being onlythirteen months since the party left the Redriver settlements.

COL. FRENCH NOT TO BE RECOGNIZED.-TheWashington correspondent of the New YorkHerald writes, under date of the 24th:

Col. Parker H. French addressed a letter toMr. Marcy, enclosing a cpy of his credentialsas Minister from NicaragUa, and requesting aninterview. Mr. Marcy replied, and, instead ofappointing an interview, anticipated what hewould have said at once, which was, in sub-stance, that the persons who had overthrownthe government of Nicaragua were not citizens;and until there should have been some popularrecognition or confirmation of their authority, the United States could not recognise ColonelFrench, nor any one else, as Minister from thenew government. I know these to be the facts, and you can rely upon them as such, notwith-standing any and all statements, by whomso-ever made, to the contrary. B1.

DECIDEDLY COOL -- The editor of the Colum-bus (Ga.) Corner Stone is not the only disu-nionist of the country. He has the merit, however, of frankness and fearlessness. Hegives the following reason for the interest thatjournal has manifested in the subject of Kansasemigration. It says:" We feel no interest in the Kansas question,

except that resulting from the hope that theymay get up a difficulty over it, which may, bypossibility result in a dissolution of the lnion. We would not, for any other benefit we expectthe South to derive from it, turn our heel forchoice whether it shall be a free or a slaveState."

At a trial at " Nisi Prius," held before theChief Baron of the Exchequer in Ireland, awitness was so severely badgered in his cross-examination by counsel, that he rushed out ofcourt and threw himself in the river Liffey, and notwithstanding all the exert:ians made tosave him, was drowned. Tom Bayley, whonever held a brief, but could always say agood thing, upon being told of the occurrence, said that the quotation "Quos dens vult per-dare. prius dementat," should be changed to" Quos deus vult perdere nisi prius dementat,"which being freely render ed, would read," whom the gods wish to destroy, they first trySat Nisi Prina."

The Filibuster Excitement..

The seizure and detention of the steamerNorthern Light in New York harbor on the24th, created intense excitement throughoutthe city. The papers are filled with accountsof the affair. From that of the Herald we ex-tract some of the most interesting and amusingparticulars.

District Attorney McKeon, having warnedthe authorities at Washington that a filibusterexcitement was about to sail, received the fol-lowing l4iegraphic dispatch:

Mr. McKen advanced to the gang plank, which they were then hauling in; he sprungon that part of the plank resting on the spryngpiece, and thus became elevated above the massof the crowd. "Don'thaul this gang plank in,"cried Mr. McKeon, "Get off the end of thatplak' roared out the menon..bord-theveseels

"This vessel cannot go," cried pnut Mr. Me-Keeon, in a loud- voice. Then, turning to themenon deck, the filibusters, he said, "Boys, come ashore; this steamer can't go; I hold inmy hand the authority of the President of theUnited States to stop her." (This was receivedwin thsouts of derision.) "Get off the plank;'said the men on boardi "pull in the, plank.""Do, ifyou dare," said the District Attorney.:"I'll hold every one of yea responsible for theact." "Throw him off the dock," said one fel-low.

" Not so fast," says theindomitable John;"I will read you the Preeidetit' authority tomyself and Capt. Bigelow, of tahe Nayt." "

Voices--"Reesd, read."Mr. IMKeon commenced to read, when thesewere shouts of derision. Mr., MiKeon found it

impossible to read so as to be heard; but seeingfIthe Captain in the wheel-house, who had Beenattracted thereby the noise on shore, he ad-dressd drthe Cptain (Tinklepaogh,) crying outto him, "Captain, this vessel mustnot go. Iam the District Attorney of the United States, and hold the authority of the President to de-tain her."

The Captain appeared to avoid hearing theDistrict Attorney.SThe District Attorney, seeing'the determina-Stion of the persons in charge of the steamer to

get off, and the evident disposition of the crowdon the wharf to sustain them, "cried out,"Americans, will you not, sustain your ownlaws?" whereupon one gentlemanly looking

o man stepped forward and said, "By God, sir, Iwill stand by you,'for yo do stand by the laws."

I, At this moment officer Horton (deputzed byd the Marshal) sprang alongside the District At-

Storney, who inquired of Horton "Where are theo officers having in charge the execution of thelibel t" "There are four of them on board,"answered Mr. Horton.

aDistrict Attorney-Then, sir, they shall nottake them to sea.At this time Mr. Clark and Hr. Joaohimsen

had returned to pier No. 3. Mr. Clark wenttowards the ship, and she immediately put herwheels in motion, having on board Mr. tyerand his assistant, Mr. Peter Cook, who stood onthe quarter of the hurricane deck the observedof rall observers, prepared for an involuntaryvisit to the shady groves of Tropical Nicaragua.

Mr. McKeon had then left, and went to theoffice of the Nicaragua Transit Company, wherei he metMr. Jo. L. Whie, to when he readthe di.

t patch from the Executive.lr. White replied to Mr: MeKeon in the

most uncourteous terms, and said that he didnot eare a d---n for the President of the Uni-rted States or his dispatches.

Mr. McKeon, disregarding the abuse of thecounsel and general agent of the NicaragnaCompany, proceeded atonce to the United Statesbarge office, at the foot of State street, wherehe found Mr. Vanbuskirk, who was the officer1in-charge of that department. Mr. MeKeonread' to him the executive authority, and direct-ed him to take a steamtug, lying off the bargeoffice, and to place on board a number of theofficers of the customs, then present, to proceedat once to the revenue cutter lying at theoppo-site side of the river, to tow the cutter to theNorth river, so as to intercept the passage outr of the Northern Light.3Mr. McKeon then left to go to the Navy Yard

to confer with Captain Bigelow, whom he saw.Capt. B. at once agreed to send the cutter witha sufficient armed force to detain the NorthernLight, if she had not left the wharf; he alsosaid he would have two steamers in an hour anda half anchored off the Northern Light.

About a quarter before four, theNorthernLight left the wharf, and proceeded into theriver, having on board the United States Mar-shals, intending, no doubt, to carry them tosea, as the filibusters did at San Francisco.-The revenue cutter, in tow of the steam tug, moved through Buttermilk channel, so ts to in-tercept the Northern Light on her passage downthe Bay.

The Northern Light came on in the directionof Eli Island, and stood down the bay with herhead towards Sandy book. The revenue coutterwent with the greatest rapidity towards theNorthern Light, and fired a blank cartridge tobring the vessel to. The Northern Light stillkept on her course, when the cutter then fireda ball, which pissed under the "forefoot" ofthe Northern Light. This produced the desiredeffect; her wheels were immediately stopped, upon which the officer of the revenue cutterboarded her, and brought her up to the Northriver, and anchored her near the Jersey shore, under the guns of the revenue cutter.

On the return of Messrs. MleKeon and Joaeh-mesen to the District Attorney's office, Mr.

Horace F. Clark again applied to board theship, to which Mr. MlcKeon replied that he nowacted under the direct authority of the Presi-dent of the United States, under which bondswere not admissable; and that the character ofthe transaction must first be clearly ascertainedbefore anything definite as to bail could be de-termined upon.

Iu the evening, after all these things hadtranspired, Mr. McKeon received the followingletter:

The captain of the eutter require. a written order fromMr. Mehclen, to detain the steamer Northern Light, nowatanchor, with the cutter near. The steamboat is eait.ing at outr wharf to take the order.

Respectfully,J. L. VAN BUSKIRK, Inspector.HIon. JoHe, MtKeoe, U S. District Attorney.

The steamer is near the Jersey shore. He thereupon issued the followin order :

New YOer, Dee. 21--6 P. M.So : You will detain the steamer Northern Light, nowanchor, until you receive further orders from me.

Yourbs, respectlully.JOIIN McKEON, District Attorney.

To the Captain of U. S. Revenue Cutter, New YorkIHarbor.Mr. Joseph L. White, accompanied by Cap-

tain Tincklepangh, called at the residence ofMr. McKeon, in Thirty-seventh street, and theformer apoeogised for the language he had usedtowards the Attorney in the early part of theday. ole admitted that the detention of thevessel was proper, as there were over a hundredmen on board without tickets, and he asked theauthority of the Attorney to assist in puttingthem on shore; he said they were desperate, and were causing much disorder on the vessel.

Several officers of the Nicaragua Transit com-pany were present, to whom Mr. McKeonpromised an investigation of the affair on thenext morning. It was also stated that Mr. Mo-Keon said, in ttrning to Capt. Tinklepaugh,"Iwill arrest you to-morrow, sir, for your defianceof the law. You must have known of the libelon the vessel, and I called to you, when stand-ing on your own wheel-house, not to take thatvessel out. It was a most unwarrantable de-fiance of the law, to attempt to run that vesselto sea ;" and then turning to the officers of thecompany, he said, "Mr. Scott, your agent atNicaragua cannot go in the steamer. As for thesteamer, she cannot go until I am satisfied thatthe expedition is broken up, and I have the att-thority of the President to release her."

At six o'clock Mr. MoKeon telegraphed toMr. Cushing--

"l Northern Lght brought back My statements con-firmed by bmfvit. Rtport to morrow by maltJOHN McKEON."
