I love Mondays! Some people dread going back to work, but I’m pretty motivated on Monday mornings. A sentiment ofaccomplishment emits when I can scribble a line through something on a ‘to do’ list and know that I’ve helped people inthe process of it all. Motivation is something I seek. Always looking for a new hero, I tend to find inspiration in all walks of life. As much as I prefer books to television where inspiration is concerned, I can’t help sitting down to some educationaltele-programs. Animal Planet’s Monsters Inside Me has some really gruesome true stories about micro-organisms that takeup home in, you guessed it, people! If watching that doesn’t motivate you to pull out a scrub brush and go to town in yourhouse then I don’t know what will! For a more career focused inspiration bit, Bravo’s Miami Social has a cast of go-get-emyoung adults chasing after a life a cut above the rest. It isn’t the entire group of fortune-hungry entrepreneurs that areinspiring (though I am sure there are a few of you who are drawn to that kind of glitzy lifestyle), but The Apprentice alumgone Real Estate Diva, Katrina, has an approach to business that is top-notch. Though she doesn’t balance that well withher dying marriage, that girl gets the job done and has a nationwide business reputation to prove she’s a no nonsensecareer woman. One episode of that show and I'm pulling out the notepad to start a new goal list.

Although it may read that way, I don’t huddle in front of the tube all weekend pulling inspiration from pseudo actors whileothers go about their lives fashionably. In fact, all it takes is the strike of one match to light my motivation fires. The otherday I was restlessly cleaning and wiping and doing those domestically charming duties. Just like The Stepford Wives(which, by the way, only women should watch. We don’t want to give men any keen invention ideas.) the dust and grimewas cleansed to almost perfection, but something was still missing. I looked around and wondered, ‘What is it that isholding my house back from exuding the cleanly confidence that only a clean house can exude?!’ I piddled around for a fewminutes longer, as if stuck in some energy field that wouldn’t release, and then I saw it sitting there on the counter. A whitebook of matches that had been given to me by some adorable girls at a golf tournament. It had a dark pink logo of a localrestaurant pictured on it and I thought to myself, ‘I really need to eat there soon.’ My step quickened as I made my way tothe coffee table where the large pottery candle holder was waiting. All the candles had burnt to their stubby end except one,so I lit it and watched the magic begin. The entire ambiance of the house transformed as if the candle was a lock and thosematches were the key. The whole color scheme of the room changed making the room appear warmer. The sheer peachdrapes let in enough sun to cast a tasty glow all around. It’s presence created more motivation than any reality-esquetelevision show ever could. I pulled the Earth Drum Visions dvd from my library shelf and played it. The television producedsounds of native american flute and drum tunes and casted beautiful scenes of mountain ranges, canyons and lakes on the screen. The room revamped from a couch potato dwelling into an inspirational chamber of magical proportions! I thought to myself, ‘no teeny bopper Potter could do what I had just done!’

Lillie was impressed. Though I had momentarily taken her beloved Wow Wow Wubbzy and Super Sleuth videos from her, it was nap time so she didn’t seem to mind. She threw herself on her back with her best friend “sniffy blanket” (the blanketnamed for her insatiable addiction to sniffing it and even offering others a sniff). All the inspiration had capped for thatafternoon and it was time take rest. I sat down to finish reading Eight Weeks to Optimum Health by Dr. Andrew Weil, and continue my ‘to do’ list.

Happy inspirational finds,Happy motivational mind,Happiness Always.

South Carolina antique collectors and dealers takegreat pride in the unique design of their findings.Rare, unusual and one-of-a-kind items can be foundin every aisle of every store, and those who have afondness for the quality and history of antique pieces,

are people who usuallyhave a fondness for thequality of their entire life.

I was always fascinated, even as a child, byantiques and ancienttimes.

I always felt I shouldhave been born in the17th or 18th century. They really had a bigstone castle withauthentic furniture.

South Carolina’s coastal water ways are lined with towns whose residents are wild forsome festival fun. Charleston hosts a beach music and shag festival in August as wellas Pirate Week in September. During September Myrtle Beach holds their Irish ItalianInternational Festival and Hilton Head Island will celebrate another year of Seafood,Jazz and Brew. With all these events and festivals within a short drive, there shouldn’tbe a bored body in Coastal Carolina during the late summer. Beaufort particularly provides it’s fare share of fun-filled events and activities, that iswhy Beaufort is deemed one of the best U.S. coastal destinations! kFrom seedling to wither, the tree as well as all of nature’sbounty, has been a source of nutrition and healing for ages.Although herbs and plants have long been harvested for theirmedicinal properties, pharmaceutical companies are just nowbeginning to invest millions into developing antidotes derivedfrom trees to treat conditions ranging from deep vein thrombosisand tooth decay to acne.

Trees provide a natural means of curing and scientists haveclinically proven that tree extracts can treat a variety ofcomplaints from water retention to varicose veins.

Not only are trees used for medicinal healing of physical ailments, trees are also revered by many as a source of emotional healing.Sitting in a meditative state under a tree can prove to be apowerful source of emotional support. Planting memorial treesin honor of the loss of a pet or loved one has been used acoping mechanism as well as tribute to the lost love forthousands of Americans, especially those affected by lossduring war.

The Otonabee Conservation Foundation has a primaryobjective of creating awareness for the environmental andhealth benefits of trees and works to promote good foreststewardship. Although based in Canada, this group’smission has influenced many people who have visited theirsignature forest, The Herber Rogers Wildlife area, and haveinfluenced others to promote tree conservation in the U.S.

With our national community becoming more ecologically aware,we are being influenced daily to “go green”. Even in themost simple of ways when we receive offers from our creditcard companies to go paperless and do banking online, we areseeing assertive efforts by major companies to help save theplanet and the trees that we share the earth with. It is a truestatement to know that our air quality is better in areas wherethere are more trees. All-together, natural products havebeen the unsung heroes. Going unnoticed although we aresurrounded by them in all their healing majesty. Perhaps nexttime when you notice a beautiful tree waving in theBeaufort breeze, take a deep breath and take a moment tobe thankful for that which stands tall and provides benefitsbeyond compare. Our hero, the tree.

he historic metal marker, locatednext to Wendy’s Restaurant,Highway 21, reads in part:

“Battery Saxton, constructed here in 1862,was in the second line of earthworksbuilt by Federal troops occupyingBeaufort during the Civil War. Laid outby the 1st New York Engineers with theassistance of black laborers, it held three8-inch howitzers and was occupied1862-65 as one of two batteriesanswering a line from Battery Creek tothe Beaufort River, the remnants of whichare visible here just south of U.S. 21(known as Shell Rd. during the War.)”General Saxton’s 1862 Battery wasdesigned to protect the town of Beaufortfrom occasional raids by Confederatesoldiers from the mainland.

In an earlier war, in February 1779 andthe American Revolution, the identicallocation of Gen.Saxton’s Battery, was thesite of a similar British fortification toprevent American raids on the British-occupied town and harbor of Beaufortsome two miles down the road.

From his American base at Sheldon,Gen. Will iam Moultrie wrote toGen. Benjamin Lincoln on July 17, 1779:“The last information I have receivedfrom the enemy, and some from goodauthority, is, that they have sent some of their troops to Savannah, and havekept the 71st, the light infantry, and some Hessians, posted in thefollowing manner: the 71st at Beaufort, and the Hessians, at Mile End,throwing up some works. This place is a narrow neck of land, about a mile from the town, which makes it a verystrong post indeed.”

That description fits the location of the 1862 Gen. Saxton’s Battery. It prevented a Confederate attack by land.In October, 1779, the British Col. Fergusonfelt safe enough to leave Beaufort withtroops to join the beleaguered Britishtroops at Savannah. He arrived in timeto join in the battle of Savannah, Oct. 9th, which saw the British defeatcombined American and French troops, which suffered heavy losses.

At the present time, a small park, withthe remains of the 1862 earthen worksand the historic marker is located onHighway U.S. 21 when nearing Beaufortfrom the north. There is a Holiday Innand an Econo Lodge on the west side of U.S. 21. The Battery Saxton Park is on the east side of U.S. 21 adjacent toWendy’s Restaurant.

Want to go green in everypart of your life? Even whenboating? There’s no reasonwhy you can’t if you practicesome of these simple steps.• Upgrade your engine and keep it tuned. It will start easier, run smoother and perform better.

• Install a crankcase ventilator onan older engine to improve your boat’sair quality and reduce oil leaks inthe engine room and bilge.

• Fill up the boat’s gas tank whileit’s on the trailer, not in the water.Catch fuel drops by placing a donutaround the fuel nozzle and an absorbentpad underneath. Don’t overfill the tank;when fuel gets warm, it expands.

• Use commercial-grade biodieselfuel if you have a newer diesel engine.Biodiesel is safer to handle, increases lubricity, offers bettercombustion and reduces pollutantdischarge.

• Check your fiberglass fuel tanksfor leaks or holes. Don’t carry a lotof ethanol fuel on the boat becauseit will absorb water from the air.Carry spare separator filters and havea good fuel/water separator handy.

• Use an oil change pump totransfer oil. Wrap the oil filter insomething so the oildoesn’t spill into thebilge. Never use soap toclean up fuel or oil spills. It’s against the law andharms the environment.

• Use propylene glycolanti-freeze, which is lesstoxic. Don’t mix anti-freeze with anything else;that way, it can be recycled.

• Perform as much boatmaintenance and cleaningout of the water as possible.Use a dustless sander whensanding fiberglass or wood.

• Scrub your decks on aregular basis so you don’thave to use heavy cleaners.

• Use less toxic or non-toxic antifouling paintand only non-abrasiveunderwater hull cleaningtechniques.

• Ask the marina torecycle used zincs.

• Use phosphate-freebiodegradable soap tominimize the impact ofgreywater.

• Make sure the boat’s head isequipped with a USCG-approvedMarine Sanitation Device: Type I, IIor III.

• Use enzyme deodorizers in allholding tanks and portable toilets.

• Never discharge raw sewage intothe water. It’s illegal and will putharmful bacteria into the water.Use a pump-out station instead.

• Dispose of all hazardous waste ata hazardous waste collection facility.

• Take showers and do dishes onshore as much as possible to keepdischarge to a minimum.

• Have a sturdy trash container on the boat for cigarette butts, fishing lines and such, and disposeof them properly when you reachshore.

• Take advantage of onshorerecycling facilities.

• Stay at least 300 yards frommarine animals and never feed orswim with them.

Follow these tips and be agreen boater. You will help theenvironment and make for asafer experience for everyoneonboard.
