Abstract
The present data report is based on measurements obtained during sevenoceanographic cruises in the Iceland Sea, Denmark Strait and the southemmost part ofthe Greenland Sea during the time period September 1994 to November 1995. Inaddition to measurements of temperature, humidity and wind speed, calculated energyfluxes are presented. The data provide material for studies of atmosphere/seaice/ocean interaction in the area.

Introduction
Observations and derived calculations listed in this data report present results of a cooperation between the Icelandic Meteorological Office and the Marine ResearchInstitute, Reykjavik, in a subproject of the Icelandic contribution to the Europeanproject, "ESOP", The European Subpolar Ocean Program. ESOP is a Marine Scienceand Technology (MAST-Il) program of the European Cornmission, DG XII, Science,Research and Development (MAS2-CT-0057).
The marine atmosphere measurements were undertaken during oceanographic cruiseson the oceanographic vessels Bjarni Saemundsson and Arni Fridriksson of the MarineResearch Institute. Scientific project leader of these expeditions was, in most cases,Dr. Svend Aage Malmberg at the same institute.
The ocean area investigated is at the oceanic polar front in the northern NorthAtlantic, characterized by a complicated system of fiuctuating currents. The r,,)ativelywarm Irminger Current, which is a branch of the Gulf Stream System of the NorthAtlantic, approaches from the south and fiows ciockwise around Iceland. On the otherhand, the southward fiowing East Greenland CUlTent, with its branch, the EastIcelandic CUlTent, brings cold low-salinity water rnasses and sea ice into the area.
The Greenland and Iceland Seas
The present report can be seen as a continuation of similar data reports, accounting fora) observations during joint Danish Icelandic cruises in the Iceland and GreenlandSeasin 1987 -1991 (Report No.l; August 1992; Ref.[I]) andb) the first half of ESOP(Report No. 2; November 1994; Ref. [2]). The cruises described in the first reportwere the combined DanishlIcelandic contribution to the international Greenland SeaProject. The reader is referred to this GSP 1992 report (No.!) for further informationconcerning measurements and calculations. For convenience, some parts of theseearlier reports are repeated here': Appendix C by Halldor Bjornsson, B.Sc., thusappears again as the same calculation procedure was applied in the present report.
The Iceland Sea is defined as the oceanic area between Iceland, Greenland and JanMayen, overlapping the southern part of the Greenland Sea which extends fromScoresby Sound to Spitsbergen.Sea ice amount in the Iceland Sea is quite variable from year to year, depending onthree fiuctuating parameters, i.e., I) variable sea ice advection in the Arctic EastGreenland Current, 2) variable stabil ity conditions in the local ocean surface layer dueto changing temperature and salinity and 3) the dominating pressure configurationprevailing in the atmospheric general circulation across the North Atlantic. Favorableconditions for ocean boltom production in the Iceland Sea are considered substantial,though far from cornparable to conditions in the Odden sea ice area between JanMayen and Spitsbergen, the central research area of interest to ESOP.

Observations and data
In the following report an account is given on the meteorological measurements, mademainly for the purpose of estimating surface energy exchanges. The resulting surfaceexchange estimations based on the measurements will be presented. Besides threehourly synoptic observations at standard hours and similar observations at stationaryoceanographic stations, inc!uding sea surface temperature, additional measurementswere undertaken at the oceanographic stations. The measurements constituted theparameters needed for the surface energy exchange calculations, i.e. air temperature,wet bulb temperature and wind speed.
The general observation site of the additional measurements was off the ship' sportside in the stem. The anernometer, giving instantaneous readings in units of m/sec,was fixed on a bar stretched during time of observation appr. 3 meters outward fromthe ship's rail. The thennometer was placed at the ship's hull during the time spent atthe oceanographic station. Height above sea level was appr. 5 meters.
As far as possible, proper exposure of instruments was sought. Care was taken toavoid radiational effects while measuring temperatures and, similarly, obstruction ofthe air f10w caused by the ship. Due to the low temperatures frequently encountered,patience had to be shown in waiting for the wet bulb thermometer to reach the naturaIbalance with its surroundings. Despite common difficulties of maritimemeasurements and use of relatively simple instrumentation and techniques, comparedto arrangements needed for micrometeorological studies, the observations in theBjarni Saemundsson voyages are considered reliable for bulk aerodynamic formulaeapplications, particularly in estimating average energy exchange for ocean areas ofconsiderable extent.
It is hoped that this third report on maritime measurements and surface f1uxes in theIceland and Greenland Seas will provide further material for the study ofatmosphere/ocean interaction in the western part of the Greenland, Iceland andNorwegian Seas (The Nordic Sea). This is an important area for studying the c!imateof the North Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding area. Sampling of sea surfacevariables and air-sea f1uxes are of increasing interest in the study of dynamics ofc!imate (see Ref.[3]).
Acknowledgments
Co-author of this report and a partner in the ESOP-project, Dr. Thor Jakobsson, wouldlike to express his appreciation and thanks to Dr. Svend Aage Malmberg at the MarineScience Institute for enjoyable co-operation and for his contribution at various stagesof the .project so far, not least in the field itself. Further, he gratefully acknowledgesthe co-operation of the other author, Jon Elvar Wallevik, B.Sc. He organized the data,analyzed them according to the calculation procedure described in Appendix C andprepared tables and graphs for publication. Finally, appreciation is expressed to Dr.Peter Wadhams of the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge University,Coordinator of ESOP.

C A brief outline of the method used to calculate the fluxes
Abstract
The methods used in ca.Icula.ting the f1uxes of latent and sensible heatover the sea surface are expla.ined. First there is a brief overview on simplethermodynamics of moist a.ir. The relevant thenllodynamical variables arederived, and their connection with the energy f1uxes. The method used in thedata analysis is then explained.
C.l On the thermodynamics of moist air
C.l.I The equation of state for moist air
The simplest equation of state for a gas is the ideal gas rc!ation:
PV = nRT. (2)
Where P is pressure, li Volullle, n is the number of moles, T is the temperature inKelvin degrees and Rer uuiver",.1 gas constant. Here we ohalluse a slightly differentnotation. The vapour pressure will be denotecl e and instead of n we shall use themass of the water vapour 111", and then the gas constant for water vapour Rv insteadof the universalone R . Equation (2) becomes eV = MvRvT. The specific weightfor water vapour is Pv = ~~" so the equation of state becomes:
(3)
The value of the gas constant is Ru = O.llcalJ{-lg-1 (or 0.46/J]{-l g-l)
C.l.2 Moist air: water vapour eontent
Moist air is a combinatioll of dry air and water vapour. If the pressure is p,vapourpressure is c, the partial pressure of the dry air is l' - e.
The ratio of the masses of the vapour and the dry air is a common measure ofwater vapour content. This ratio is called the mixing ratio.
Let us denote it m. and write m = ~\ff" = p". I-Iere 1I1d is the mass of the dry air1 1 d Pd
and Pd its specific weight.According to (3) (I" = Il:T and similarily for the dry air (Id = ;~:;.
The mixing rat.io becomes:
R'T C Rd71~ == -"- = ---
p-o 1"ilT p-ecu"
The gas constant for dry air is Rd= O.06!JealJ{-l g-J (or O.287J]{-l g-I).Using the numerical va.lues for the constant.o (4) simplifies to:
O.622e111 ==
p-c
We often have p ~ c and then (5) becomeo m = 0.622'P
(4)
(5)
94
Another way to assess the amount of water va-pour in a.ir is to use the spccijichumidity q which is the ratio of the vapour mass and unit air mass.
lf the density of the air is p = Pv + Pd, then q = ---.E.-+' • As above this can bePv Pel.
rewritten:J) H"
C Ld eR(j - - to
1 - pRv + c(Rd - Rv) - p +e/\,II"
Using numerical values for the constants this becomes:
0.G22eq=
p - 0.37Se
(6)
(7)
C.l.3 Moist air: the gas constant of moist air
The mass of moist. air !Il is the slim of the rnasses of water vapour and of dry air:
M = Mv +lIhThe gas const.ant for moist air is therefore R", = ~'; Rv + o/:f R d •
S· M tI' l 'ttlnce 171 = iH:' .118 Ci:\.l1 )e wn' en:
l +m(S)
Since the ratio ~" is 1.61, the gas constant for the moist air becomes:,I
Rd (1.Glm + l)
l +m
C.l.4 Moist air: vapour pressure 111 all'
The first law of thermodynamics can be written:
du = liq + liw.
(D)
(lO)
Where du is the change ill internil.l energy per rnass unit, liq is the change in heat permass unit and liw i" the IVork per mas" unit.. If we put du = cvdT and liw = -pdwinto (10) we get.:
(11 )
Where Cv is the specijic heat capacity at constant valume and dv is the differentialchange of the specijic valume. Di[ferentiation af the ideal gas relation gives RdT =pdv + vdp. Combining this with (11) and conneeting the specijic heat capacities atconstant valume and constant pressure by using Cl' = Cv + R yields:
liq = cl'dT + vdp. (12)
For isobaric processes dp = O. The last term in (12) clisappea,rs, and we get liq =cl'dT.
Air can be isobarical!y cooled il' a liquid evaporates into it. The evaporation ofthe liquicl needs heat, which it get.s from the air, thereby lowering the temperatureof the air.
95
Consider a mass of air that is cooled in this manner, ever getting moister untilit becomes satur<lted. Let the initial temperature of the air be I' and the finaltemperature, the wel blllb lempemlll1'e be 1'.,. Likewise call the initial mixing mtio17~ a.nd the lnixing ratio at saturation 1nw o
The amount of heat taken from the air is 6.Q = L6.l\ilv where 6.l\ilv is the massincrease of the water, and L is the coefficient of latent heat.
The inital mass is Mi = Md+ M~ = Md(l +m)The final mass is Mf = Md+ M! = MAI +m w )
So the mass inCl'ease is 6.Mv = (Mf - Mi) = Md(m w - m) and the amount ofheat taken up during the evaporation is 6.Q = LMd(mw - ml.
This amount must by supplied by the cooling air:6.Q = - JJw MCpdT = JijcpdMd +c,>vMv)dT,
where Cpd and cpv are the specijic heal capacilies al conslanl preSSll"C of dry air andvapOllr, respective1y.
This simplifies to:MdJ]~(Cpd + cpvm')dT,
where m' is the changing mixing ratio. By assuming that the change in the mixingratio is linearly related to temperature wc substitute it with I'h, a constant meanmixing ratio for the process.
We therefore get:6.Q = Md(Cpd + c,,,,I'I1) JI dI' = Md(c"d + cpvl'h)(T - Tw )
The above leads to:
By using Cpd + 'llCpv c:= Cpd, (5) and l' ::;J> e we get
0.622L
C.l.5 Estimation of the latent heat of evaparation
By putting ow = pdv the first law of thermodynamics (10) can be written
oq = du +pdv
(13)
(14)
(15)
Jf water vapour is condensed a.t saturation pressure PM' the afl10unt of heatreleased pcr unit mass (which equ;tls the cocfficicnt of latcnt heat) is:

At O°C L is: L(O) = 597.3calg-1
AlineM approximation of L(T) dose to zero gives:
96
L(T) = L(O) + ~~T = 597.3 - 0.566T.
C.2 Transfer equations
(16)
The flux of sensible a.nel latent hcat can be cstimated by the fol1owing eqUi1tions:Sensible heat flux:
Latent heat flux:
QH = - CzUpCpd(Tair - Tseasurface)·
QL = - CzU pL(qair - qseasurface).
(17)
(18)

C.3 Analyses of the data
Mesuremcnts from the resea.rch wesscl Bjarni Saemunelsson included wind spced, airpressure, airtemperature, wet bulb tempcrature and sea surface temperaturc. Fromthese thc heat fluxes werc calculated in the fol1owing mannel':
• The saturation prcssure at sca surface and in the air is found by using thetcmperature valucs. This can bc elone by looking it up in the appropriatetables. The air at the sea surface is assumed to havc the same tempcratureas the sea.. Corrcction is madc for the efTects of salinity which causes a 2 %decline in the saturation prcssure at the surfacc.
• Thc latcnt heil.t cocfIicient L is calculatcd from (16)
• The pa.rtial prcssurc of watcr vapour in air is found by using (14). It. is assumedtha.t the air at the sea slII'facc is fully saturateel, so the partial prcssure of watcrvapour at the slIrface is sel. (.:qllal 1.0 l.he sal.ural.ion pressurc al. l.he surface.
• The specific humidil.y is calculatcd from (7)
• The dcnsil.y of l.he air is esl.imal.cd by:
1. Calculal.ing the mixing ratio (5)
2. Fineling thc gas consl.anl. by using (9)
3. Calculating the dcnsil.y [rorn thc sl.ate cquation (3), using l.he previouslycalcula.ted gas consl.ant..
The elcnsity is tlltls calcula.Leel both for l.he air at and above the sea surfaceand the mean of the two is thcn uscd.
• The fluxes o[ sensiblc anel latcnt heat is calculateel accOl'ding to (18 anel

U!!.!...!:!!~~!<!>!!~
For all cruises "dry air", does not mean dry air literally, but rather general air temperature.The reason for this use of the word "dry air" is to dlstingulsh clearly between the airtemperature and the wet bulb temperature. The actual dry air temperature will never comeinto consideration in these files sa it should be quite safe in this context to use the word "dryair temperature" instead of simply "air temperature".
