“Called to be a Holy Family”

By Deacon Tim A family, with its various members is com-plex and as we all know, all families have multiple challenges in life. Each has a special role in the family and The Holy Family is no different. In the readings this Sunday from the Book of Sirach and from St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we hear how we should act as a father, a mother, a son and daughter. God gives us His word and commandments to follow to help build the family into a cohesive bond of love, or as St. Paul puts it in his letter to the Colossians, “put on love, that is, the bond of perfection”. He said to “put on heart-felt compassion”, to understand the other person, to put yourself in their shoes. He said to “put on kind-ness, humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another”. The family is where we learn, where we build self-esteem, where we learn to pray, where we learn to forgive and love. St. John Paul II said that “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.” Our family is not just blood relatives, nor should it be thought that way. In the Gospel of Ma-tthew, Jesus was speaking to a crowd and then some-one told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Fa-ther in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” God gives us the Holy Family as a per-fect guide and model to follow, as individuals, and as family. Each member of this beautiful fa-mily has a very important goal in common. Jesus, Joseph, and Mary, all follow God the Father’s word and will in their lives, even though it may be a path that they, and we alone, would not think to follow. We hear in the Gospel of Luke that Jesus stays in Jerusalem to be in His Father’s house, revea-ling to all His special relationship with His Heaven-ly Father. The Gospel tells us that Jesus is obedient to Mary and Joseph, which is fulfilling God the Father’s

commandment, to honor His father and mother. Jesus was obedient to God the Father all the way to the Cross because of His love for God, and for each of you. Although we don’t know a lot about Joseph, we do see his character as just, patient, a righteous man and obedient to God. From the Gospel of Matthew, he obeyed the angel from God, “do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.“ Mary, The Mother of God, was obedient to God the Father all the way to the Cross where she watched her son die. Mary, as we all are, was cho-sen by God. In the first chapter of Luke, God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary announcing that although she was a virgin, “the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God for with God, nothing is impossible.” Her response was “let it be done according to your word”. Mary freely cooperated with God in the work of human salvation through her faith and obedience. We have the perfect family to follow, to follow the word of God in our own lives. We all come from a family and we are a family, the Body of Christ, The Church. If you have ever looked at the large stained glass window by our choir, when it is dark outside, you can’t see the image. When the sunlight hits it, it shows the Jesus recognized in the breaking of the bread, revealing many people’s faces, young, and old, black, white, women and men, the church family. When we rely on Jesus Christ, our light, to shine in our families, gifted with His divine life from our Baptism to help us, He can bring ho-liness to our family, united to The Holy Family. Through the intercession of The Holy Family, we can, and are called to make visible the bond of love not just in our own families, but for the entire human family.

NEW YEAR’S DAY - We must come to Church!The first day of the year 2019 the Church makes it a Holy Day because the Church wants her children to be grateful to God for the many blessings we received in the past year and entrust the New Year to God. We are encouraged to attend Mass for the first day of the year. By attending Mass on this day we can be sure that we will have a very spiritual year helping us to grow in relationship with the Lord and with one another. The Church celebrates the solemnity of Mary Mother of God. Let us entrust ourselves to our Lady and ask her to bring us to her Son. Let us ask her to show us the way to love and peace in our world. Let us feel her maternal tenderness and her love. It was Blessed Pope Paul XV who instituted this day as the day to pray for World Peace. This is very significant because to-day more than ever the world is seeking peace. This peace is not what governments offer but it is the true peace that comes from the heart. Only Jesus can give us this peace no one else. So let us pray that we will enjoy God’s peace throughout the year and realize that peace begins with me not with the other but with me. We must work for peace in our family, our town, our country and the world. The children of God should always live in peace and fraternity with one another. We entrust the leaders of our nations to God that they too will procure peace for the world. As Blessed Pope Paul XV said: “War is not the answer, no more war.”

May the peace of Christ reign always in your heart.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2019It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the year and here we are ready to enter a New Year. It is a time to be grateful to Almighty God for allowing us to come this far and be able to embrace this New Year 2019. Let us pray that it would be a very peaceful year and that many peo-ple will bless others in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. We want to wish all our parishioners and your families a very happy and a blest 2019. May this year bring us many blessings to our country and to our families. May the peace of Jesus reign in people’s hearts and will lead us to see Christ in others. Let us work together in building a culture of life and peace beginning with our families. Llamados a ser una sagrada familia

Por el Diácono Tim Una familia, como todos sabemos con sus varios miembros es compleja, todas las familias tienen múltiples retos en la vida. Cada uno tiene un papel especial en la familia y en la Sagrada familia sucede igual. En las lecturas de este domingo del Libro del Eclesiástico y de la Carta del apóstol san Pablo a los colosenses, escuchamos cómo debemos actuar como padre, madre, hijo e hija. Dios nos da Su palabra y man-damientos para cumplirlos para ayudar a construir la familia en un lazo cohesivo de amor, un lazo de unión, o como lo dice san Pablo en su carta a los colosenses, “Tengan amor, que es el vínculo de la perfecta unión”. Sean compasivos, para entender a la otra persona, pón-gase en el lugar del otro. Él dijo, “Sean magnánimos, humildes, afables y pacientes. Sopórtense mutuamente y perdónense cuando tengan quejas contra el otro”. La familia es donde aprendemos, donde for-talecemos nuestra autoestima, donde aprendemos a rezar, donde aprendemos a perdonar y a amar. San Juan Pablo II dijo que “con-forme avance la familia, avanza la nación y avanza el mundo entero en que vivimos”. Nuestra familia no es solamente parientes con-sanguíneos, ni se debe pensar de esa manera. En el evangelio de san Mateo, Jesús hablaba a la muche-dumbre y luego alguien le dijo: “Alguien le dijo: «Tu madre y tus hermanos están ahí fuera y quieren hablar contigo». Pero Jesús dijo al que le daba el recado: «¿Quién es mi madre y quiénes son mis hermanos?»E indicando con la mano a sus discípulos, dijo: «Estos son mi madre y mis hermanos. Tomen a cualquiera que cumpla la voluntad de mi Pa-dre de los Cielos, y ése es para mí un herma-no, una hermana o una madre» (Mt. 12, 47-50). Dios nos da a la Sagrada familia como una guía y modelo perfectos a seguir, como individuos y como familia. Cada miembro de esta hermosa familia tiene un objetivo muy importante en común. Jesús, José y María, todos siguen la Palabra y la voluntad de Dios Padre en sus vidas, a pesar de que a lo mejor haya un camino el cual ellos, y nosotros, no pensaríamos en seguir. Escuchamos en el evangelio de san Lucas que Jesús se queda en Jerusalén para estar en la Casa de Su

Padre, revelando a todos Su especial relación con Su Padre celestial. El evangelio nos dice que Jesús es obe-diente a María y José, lo cual es cumplir con el man-damiento de Dios Padre, honrar a padre y madre. Jesús fue obediente a Dios Padre en todo momento hasta la Cruz por Su amor a Dios y a cada uno de ustedes. A pesar de que no sabemos mucho sobre José, vemos su personaje como un hombre justo, pa-ciente, honrado, y obediente a Dios. En el evange-lio de san Mateo escuchamos que José obedeció al ángel de Dios, “José, descendiente de David, no ten-gas miedo de llevarte a María, tu esposa, a tu casa; si bien está esperando por obra del Espíritu Santo; cu-ando José se despertó, hizo lo que el Ángel del Se-ñor le había ordenado y tomó consigo a su esposa”. María, la Madre de Dios, fue obediente a Dios Padre en todo momento hasta la Cruz donde vio a su hijo morir. María, como todos nosotros, fue escogida por Dios. En el primer capítulo de san Lucas, Dios envió al ángel Gabriel a María para anunciarle que a pesar de que era virgen, “el niño será Santo y será llamado Hijo de Dios, porque no hay nada imposible para Dios”. Su respuesta fue “que se cumpla en mí lo que has dicho”. María li-bremente cooperó con Dios en la obra de la sal-vación humana por medio de su fe y obediencia. Tenemos a la familia perfecta a imitar, para seguir la palabra de Dios en nuestras vidas. Todos venimos de una familia y somos una sola familia, que es el Cuerpo de Cristo, que es la Iglesia. Si al-guna vez han observado el gran vitral por el lado del coro, cuando está oscuro afuera no se puede ver, pero cuando la luz del sol le da, se ve a Jesús al partir el pan, revelándose ante los rostros de mucha gente, a jóvenes, blancos y negros, a la familia de la iglesia. Cuando confiamos en Jesucristo, nues-tra luz, para que brille en nuestras familias, dot-ado con Su vida divina desde nuestro Bautis-mo para ayudarnos, Él puede traernos santidad a nuestra familia, unidos a la santísima trinidad. Que por intercesión de la Sagrada familia, poda-mos y estemos llamados a hacer visible el lazo de amor, no solo en nuestra familia, sino en la familia humana entera.

PRIMER DÍA DEL AÑO - ¡Debemos venir a Misa!El primer día del 2019 la Iglesia declara este día santo y día de fiesta porque quiere que sus hijos sean agra-decidos con Dios por las tantas bendiciones que hemos recibido durante el año que termina y para encomendar en Nuevo año a Dios. Se nos anima a todos a venir a Misa por ser el primer día del año. Al venir a Misa este día podemos estar seguros de que tendremos un año fructífero espiritualmente que nos ayudará a crecer en nuestra relación con el Señor y de unos a otros. La iglesia celebra la Solemnidad de santa María, Madre de Dios. Encomendémonos a Nuestra señora y pidámosle que nos lleve hacia su Hijo; que ella nos muestre el camino de amor y paz en nuestro mundo. Sintamos su ternura maternal y su amor. El Beato Papa Pablo XV instituyó este día como día de oración por la paz del mundo. Esto es muy significativo porque hoy más que nunca el mundo anda en busca de la paz. Esta paz no es algo que ofrece el gobierno sino la paz verdadera que viene del corazón. Solo Jesús puede darnos esta paz. Nadie más. Así que oremos para que podamos disfrutar de la paz de Dios a lo largo del año pero que también nos demos cuenta que la paz empieza no con el otro sino con uno mismo. Debemos luchar para que haya paz en nuestra familia, nuestro pueblo, nuestra nación y en el mundo. Los hijos de Dios debemos vivir siempre en paz y en fraternidad unos con otros. Encomendemos a los líderes de nuestra nación a Dios para que ellos también procuren porque haya paz para el mundo. Como dijo el Beato Papa Pablo XV: “La guerra no es la respuesta; ¡no más guerra!”

Que la paz de Cristo reine siempre en su corazón.

ASISTENCIA A MISA EN NAVIDADEstamos muy agradecidos con todas las personas que vi-nieron a Misa en la Navidad. Seguramente muchos fueron a Misa adonde se fueron a pasar la Navidad con sus famil-ias. Para aquellos que vinieron aquí les decimos que us-tedes hicieron que las Misas fueran hermosas con su pre-sencia y por eso estoy agradecido y también por su regalo de Navidad para la parroquia. Como siempre, fue bonito poder contar con ustedes y su generosidad. ¡Gracias!

FELIZ AÑO NUEVO 2019Es difícil de creer que estamos en el fin de año y ya listos para iniciar un nuevo año. Es momento de estar agra-decidos con nuestro Dios todopoderoso por permitirnos llegar hasta aquí y poder recibir este Nuevo año 2019. Oremos para que sea un año de mucha paz y para que muchas personas bendigan a otras en nombre de Jesu-cristo nuestro Señor. Les deseamos a todos nuestros par-roquianos y a sus familias un muy feliz y bendecido Año nuevo 2019. Que este año traiga muchas bendiciones a este país y a todos nosotros. Que la paz de Jesús reine en los corazones de la gente y que esa paz nos lleve a ver el rostro de Cristo en los demás. Trabajemos juntos para construir una cultura de vida y paz empezando en casa con nuestra familia. Una vez más gracias por toda su amabili-dad y generosidad. ¡Feliz Año nuevo!

Si al-gunos de ustedes no le han dado su regalo a la parroquia todavia lo podrán hacer, solo asegúrense de marcar el sobre claramente “Regalo de Navidad” o ”Christmas gift”.
