Chaplaincy Sunday 2016 Chaplaincy Sunday Appeal This Weekend

The Melbourne Catholic Archbishop’s Fund is con-

ducting an Appeal in parishes to support the vital work

of Catholic Chaplains in our community this weekend.

Chaplaincy Sunday, in this Year of Mercy, is an oppor-

tunity for all of us to commit ourselves to the words

of Pope Francis, “it must be a place of mercy where eve-

ryone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged

to live the good life of the Gospel”.

The presence of Catholic Chaplains is a crucial witness

to our faith, a crucial dimension of our service of love,

and a vital testimony to the value of life in all of its

stages.

Donations will go towards supporting Chaplains who

work with:

Patients and their families in public hospitals

People living with HIV/AIDS

Men and women in Prisons

Young people in youth justice facilities

Seafarers

Envelopes are available on the seats, if required. Col-

lection will be taken up as a leaving collection.

(Continued on page 4)

More of What’s Happening Here…. Support the Infant Viability Bill -

Action Needed Now On May, 25th the Victorian Legislative Council will

debate the Infant Viability Bill introduced to the par-

liament by Dr Rachael Carling Jenkins in October last

year. This bill is the first formal attempt at pro-life leg-

islation in Victoria in decades, and the first legislative

attempt to remedy, at least in part, the ultra permis-

sive Victorian abortion law reforms of 2008 currently

allowing late term abortion up to 9 months gestation,

and no requirement to offer support or counselling to

pregnant women.

Under this new bill—

Abortions would no longer be allowed from the

24th week of pregnancy.

Infant viability will be promoted and supported

(all infants born alive from the 24th week of

pregnancy onwards, including as the result of a

medical emergency, must be cared for with the

intent to save the infant’s life if at all possible)

Mothers who are at least 24 weeks pregnant,

who present in distress to their doctor must be

offered practical support, for example a referral

to a pregnancy support service offering holistic

care (counselling, social and practical support).

Penalties will be introduced for physicians who

breach the new laws and for medical facilities in

which the laws are breached. Mothers will not

be criminalised or face penalties.

How you can help: The success of the Infant Viability

Bill relies heavily on the support it receives from the

public. Please seriously consider supporting this bill in

both the following ways:

1. Write to your Victorian State members (both

MLC and MLA) in support of the Infant Viability

Bill.

2. Support the Bill with your presence at the Infant

Viability Rally in Saturday, 21st May on the

steps of Parliament House, Spring Street,

beginning at 2pm.
