OPERA ON THE LAKE 2016

TURANDOTGIACOMO PUCCINI

There are Chinese elements in the music,

too. Puccini was inspired by tunes from

music boxes that a diplomat friend brought

back from China. But however Chinese

Puccini‘s last opera might appear, the

plot is adapted from a Persian tale and

the score is full-blown Italian opera. The

powerful Turandot is contrasted with the

self- sacrificing Liù, who loves Prince Calaf

and knows his name but movingly takes the

secret to her grave. The populace mourns

her death as passionately as previously it

relished the spectacle of Turandot‘s suitors

being beheaded. Fire artists, dancers and

soldiers accompany Turandot‘s entrance

in Act Two. Before she sets the Prince her

riddles, she reveals why she is so hard-

hearted: long ago a female ancestor of hers

was abused and murdered by a man. Finally,

however, Calaf‘s love is able to break the

mask of Turandot‘s ancestress. As Puccini

wanted, the two of them ‘descend through

love to the level of mankind, and this love

must at the end take possession of the

whole stage‘.

No man shall ever possess her – the

Chinese princess Turandot sets three

riddles for every man that comes to

woo her. So far none have been able to solve the

riddles, and have paid with their heads. Then

an unknown prince achieves the impossible:

he correctly answers all three questions. But

Turandot is still unwilling to surrender to him.

So the Prince is ready to lay down his life if she

can find out his name by morning. Throughout

the night, no one may sleep: everyone must try

to discover his name...

It is this aria sung by Calaf, ‘Nessun dorma‘,

that made Giacomo Puccini‘s opera Turandot

world famous. On the Bregenz stage it‘s

delivered against the imposing backdrop of a

dragon-shaped wall on Lake Constance. Marco

Arturo Marelli‘s stage set makes use of Chinese

symbols of power. The stage wall is inspired

by the world‘s longest man-made structure,

the Great Wall of China. The Bregenz wall is

criss-crossed by detachments of terracotta

warriors, over two hundred in all, some of them

sky-high, others half-submerged in the water.

„I‘m moved by the strange tension between the biographical reality of Puccini‘s life and what‘s at the heart of this work, the mystery of this woman and this love.“

HA MLETFRANCO FACCIO

After that the opera was not staged again –

until 2014 when it was revived in Albuquerque

(USA) by conductor Anthony Barrese, who

has also prepared a critical edition of the

score. Curiously, the impressive funeral

march for Ofelia‘s death has survived in the

annual Easter ritual on the Greek island of

Corfu.

The Bregenz Festival is now bringing Faccio‘s

Amleto back to Europe. The Turandot

conductor Paolo Carignani is as enthusiastic

about the opera as Olivier Tambosi, the

internationally acclaimed stage director.

Joined by the respected stage designer

Frank Philipp Schlößmann and the success-

ful costume designer Gesine Völlm, the team

will enter the world of ghostly apparitions in

the night, plays with treacherous intent, and

a love that ends tragically.

It‘s an impetuous, impassioned Hamlet that

treads the boards in composer Franco

Faccio and librettist Arrigo Boito‘s opera

Amleto, which was first staged in 1865 in Genua

and performed again at La Scala Milan in 1871.

The opera begins in the middle of the coronation

ceremony for the new king, Claudio. Hamlet

struggles to conceal his dark suspicions that

Claudio had his father killed in order to seize

his crown and his wife. Claudio‘s drinking song

rings out like a cynical requiem for the dead.

Faccio and Boito skilfully and effectively

challenge the conventions of Italian opera,

which they wanted to revitalise by infusing

it with the spirit of Shakespeare‘s drama.

A fascinating libretto of great sensitivity

and poetic power was delivered by Boito,

who went on to write the libretti for Giuseppe

Verdi‘s Otello and Falstaff. The composer,

Faccio, was also director of La Scala Milan

and conducted the first performance in Italy

of Verdi‘s Aida and the world premiere of

Otello. However, his own opera Amleto was

not a success at La Scala, notably because the

tenor singing the lead role was so ill that the

publisher Giulio Ricordi later described the

performance as „Hamlet without Hamlet“.

ORCHESTRALCONCERTS

Inspired by Puccini‘s Turandot and

Faccio‘s Amleto, the orchestra con-

certs will feature more Italian music,

including the seldom performed Requiem

by Gaetano Donizetti to be conducted

by Enrico Mazzola. The concert by the

Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra will also

have an Italian focus. The Vienna Symph-

ony Orchestra under its chief conductor

Philippe Jordan will commemorate its

first concert at the Bregenz Festival

70 years ago. The Finnish conductor

Susanna Mälkki will present the Violin

Concerto ’Da drunten im Tale‘ (’Down

poser Otto M. Zykan; the violinist will be

Patricia Kopatchinskaja.

ACTIVITY & INSPIRATION

Where the federal state of Vorarlberg meets Lake Constance is widely regarded as THE cultural centre of the international Lake Constance region. In and around the towns of Bregenz, Dornbirn, Hohenems and Feldkirch, classical and modern music can be heard on stages big and small, all year round. Museums with stimulating exhi-bitions. Captivating landscapes. Walking routes and cycle paths go round the shore of the lake and lead up into the nearby moun-tains. From Bregenz harbour, freight and passenger ships of the Lake Constance fleet head for destinations all round the lake.

BREGENZ

The town on Lake Constance is lively and

culture-conscious. Works by contemporary

artists are displayed at Kunsthaus Bregenz,

a multiple award winning glass cube that was

designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.

Changing exhibitions can be seen at Vorarl-

berg Museum. Original: its facade is deco-

rated with over 16,000 concrete petals. The

top floor contains a unique „showroom“ with

an enormous window affording a panoramic

view over Lake Constance. Fine views of the

lake and the alpine landscape are also to be

had from the Pfänder, the mountain behind

Bregenz which can be ascended using a

cable car.

DORNBIRN

A popular destination in Dornbirn is inatura,

an interactive natural history centre with

science zones. The Rolls-Royce Museum con-

tains the world‘s largest collection of motor

cars of that luxury brand. Karren Mountain,

right on Dornbirn‘s doorstep, can be ascen-

ded by cable car to the glass-walled Panora-

ma Restaurant, which offers fantastic views.

HOHENEMS

The Jewish Museum in Hohenems explores

historical and topical subjects in its per-

manent exhibition and special exhibitions.

There are regular guided tours through the

carefully renovated Jewish quarter. Hohe-

nems also hosts some of the concerts of the

Schubertiade; the festival‘s principal locati-

on is Schwarzenberg in Bregenz Forest.

Experience grand opera, open-air, on the shores of Lake Constance. Stroll through bustling towns and villages. Re-energise yourself in the heart of the countryside. The landscapes between Lake Constance and the over 2,000 metre high mountains are a feast for the senses. Attentive hosts and inventive cooks know exactly how to treat their visitors. Vorarlberg invites its visitors to go on a journey of discovery and have

some really special experiences.

GOOD TASTE

Towns and villages contain a surprising number of interesting buildings. Nowhere else in Austria is so much well-designed contemporary architecture to be found in so small an area. The cooking is amongst the best in Austria. It largely relies on regionally sourced produce – from Lake Constance fish to the well-known hard

cheese, Bergkäse.

FELDKIRCH

The medieval town abounds in cobbled

streets and shady arcades. A modern touch

is supplied by the new Montforthaus, a

culture and congress centre. Find out about

local history in the museum inside Schatten-

burg castle, which towers above the town.

From the keep there are spectacular views

of the surrounding scenery. The tourist

office Feldkirch Tourismus offers a range

of interesting themed tours.
