LAMAR (14-15, 5-1 SOUTHLAND) Head coach Beth Torina is in her eighth season at the helm of LSU softball and has coached the Tigers to four Women’s College World Series appearances. She earned her 100th SEC victory in the 3-2 win over Florida Monday night. Aliyah Andrews and Amanda Sanchez were both named to the Preseason All-SEC team in January. Andrews and Sanchez were both on the SEC All-Defensive Team in 2018. Amanda Sanchez was named to the USA Softball Player of the Year “Watch List”. The Tigers put together six-straight run- rule victories to start the 2019 season, the second-longest run-rule streak in program history. The Tigers have 10 run-rule games on the year after a 17-3 five-inning win over Texas A&M. LSU tallied 73 runs in 30 innings to start the year in the Tiger Classic, the most runs in any six-game stretch in program history. The Tigers scored a total of 29 runs over the three-game series against Texas A&M, the most runs scored in an SEC series in program history. The Tigers claimed the series over Florida for the first time since the 2015 season. It was the first series victory in Baton Rouge since the 2007 season. After falling 4-3 in game one, the Tigers fought back and recorded an 8-0 six-inning run-rule of No. 7 Florida. The last time the Tigers run-ruled Florida was back in 2005. The Tigers hit three home runs in that game, just the second time in program history that the Tigers hit three home runs in an SEC game. Amanda Sanchez led the Tigers again, hitting .556 on the week with five hits, including four extra-base hits of three doubles and a home run. She had the game- winning RBI double that helped the Tigers claim the series on Monday night. Shelbi Sunseri continues her reached base streak to 29 games, which is the second-longest streak since Bailey Landry’s 33-game streak in 2017. Andrews now has 27 stolen bases on the season. The single-season record is 45 set by Kirsten Shortridge in 2010. Andrews finished with 42 last season. Last year the Tigers hit 41 home runs for the season and the Tigers had 30 home runs before SEC play this season, the most before SEC play in program history. After four home runs on the weekend, the Tigers have now hit the same number as last season of 41. Shemiah Sanchez had five home runs in four games (Northwestern St., SFA, Texas A&M), including two grand slams. Against Northwestern St. she became the first player in program history to hit multiple home runs in consecutive games. Only two other players have had 4 homers over the course of two games, and it was the same two games in 2016. Kelsi Kloss and Bianka Bell each had 1 HR vs. Alabama and each had 3 HR vs. Louisiana Tech. There have been 13 occasions when players have homered in 3 straight games. Sunseri and Shemiah Sanchez have done it this year. Sahvanna Jaquish did it 4 different times in her career. On the weekend, Maribeth Gorsuch led the charge in the circle, collecting two shutout victories and allowing just four hits in her two complete games. Her performance earned her SEC Pitcher of the Week, the first weekly honor in her career. Shelby Wickersham picked up the win against Florida on Monday. She gave up a two-run home run in the first inning, but settled down and did not allow another run the rest of the game. Gorsuch leads the staff with a 1.34 ERA, while Wickersham is right behind with a 1.39 ERA.
